Abstract

249,674. Turner, W. B. May 21, 1925. Hand sieves.-A shovel, spade, or the like is constructed so as to enclose its contents, e.g. live coals, completely to facilitate their safe removal, and is modified so as to facilitate the sifting of the contents, such as ashes, or their sprinkling. Fig. 2 shows a shovel with a trough-section body a and vertical sides a', the front parts of which are inclined and are notched as at a<3>. The cover c consists of a top with vertical sides c<1> and an end-piece (not shown), perforated for the passage of the handle b of the shovel. The pivoted loophandle d of the cover has a free end d<1> which, as the handle d falls, enters an aperture d<2> in the cover c and engages with the rear end of the shovel. In use, the cover c is drawn back, as shown, and the shovel filled. The cover is then pushed forwards, until the flap e falls and encloses the contents; the handle d, being released, falls and locks the cover in position. The front edge of the cover e may be engaged with one of the stops a<3> leaving beneath the edge a narrow opening through which the finer contents may pass and be separated from ashes &c. of larger size. In a modification, the cover c has shallow flanges c<1 >engaging with and sliding in grooves in the upper parts of the sides a<1>.
