Abstract

249,669. Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Co., Ltd., (Union Switch & Signal Co.). March 19, 1925. Converting alternating and direct currents.-A rectifier of the copper oxide type, such as described in Specification 194,653, is used as the rectifier in an anangement for the supply from an alternating source of uni-directional current to the plate or filament circuit of a thermionic valve. Fig. 1 shows a detecting valve D, the plate and filament circuits of which are supplied through smoothing circuits B<1>, C and rectifiers D, E oppositely connected in pairs from a transformer K connected to an alternating current source. Fig. 2 shows the construction of the rectifying device E which consists of sections 37, 50, 51 having connections 24 - - 27. Each section comprises a number of copper discs 40 having an oxide coating 41 on one side, and sheets 39 of soft conducting material, e.g. lead foil interposed between them. The units may be surrounded by an insulating tube 36 mounted in a frame 34 and pressed into intimate contact by a screw 35.
