Abstract

A hollow channel that is placed within a wall, partition or ceiling which contains magnets and spacers; the magnets and spacers are slid along the entire length of the channel with the use of a magnet external to the wall. This allows the position of the magnetic hanging points to be varied. When the channel and magnets are used together with magnetic and steel fixtures and fittings external to the wall then pictures, plants, lights, kitchen utensils etc can be hung from the wall, partition or ceiling without any damage to these surfaces. The side of the channel closest to the surface of the wall can be covered in a metal mesh; the mesh allows plaster to adhere to the channel and blend into the flat surface of the wall.

Description

THE CONCEALED SLIDING MAGNET SYSTEM
INTRODUCTION
The present methods of hanging pictures or other objects from a wall, where there is no fixed and visible picture rail, include using a picture hook, a screw, a pin, a nail or blue tack. All these methods cause some damage to the wall and its decoration. Many modern houses and art galleries do not generally have fixed and visible picture rails and the concealed sliding magnet system allows the hanging of pictures or other objects on the wall without causing any damage to the wall and its decoration.
DESCRIPTION
Figure 1 This is a channel that contains magnets at regular intervals. The magnets are separated by spacers. The magnets can be slid along the length of the channel. The face of the channel is covered with steel mesh and then set and fixed into a wall. Once the channel and mesh are recessed into the wall a skim plaster is trowelled over it and it becomes blended into the wall. The channel has an interlocking facility at each end and can therefore be extended to the length required. The channel can also be set into the ceiling. The channel is made of a number of components and these include the magnets at regular intervals (a), the spacers between the magnets (b) and the rigid, U-shaped channel (c) and the mesh over the whole length of the face closest to the surface of the wall (d).
The magnets can be moved as one group by placing a magnet exterior to the channel on the surface of the wall and using a horizontal pushing motion. The magnets can also be moved individually by placing a magnet exterior to the channel on the surface of the wall and using a horizontal drawing or pushing motion. The magnets can also remain static, ie. in the position in which they were originally installed or set.
Figure la Figure la shows a cross-section of the rod including the channel (d) and the magnet (e).
Figure 2 This is a curved section of the channel (which may be interlocked with the channel pictured in Figure 1). Magnets can also be moved within this curved section of channel and by moving them through such a section of channel they can be transferred to another horizontal channel either above or below the original channel. The magnets can therefore be slid along a continuous set of horizontal channels set at varying heights within a wall. In between the magnets are non-magnetic cylinders which serve as spacers between the magnets. Figure 2 shows the curved channel including the magnets (a), the spacers (b), the rigid U-shaped channel (c) and the mesh over the whole length of the face closest to the surface of the wall (d).
The magnets within the concealed channel can be located either with a compass or with an exterior handheld magnet.
