Abstract

A dental drill with a moving head to allow variable angle of the bur (the cutting part) to give the operator greater ease of use. Many technical solutions can be used to create this change in angle, for example a motor. The dental hand piece may have a light illuminating the area being drilled which may be moved to the same angle as the bur (head) movement using a synchronized motor. The hand piece angle may be changed by rotating the head or by moving the bur along a track in the head. The angle may be changed using a button.

Description

Rotating Angle Dental Drill (high and slow speed)
Written Description
A dental drill (often known as a dental hand piece) is a hand held, high-speed or slow-speed drill. At the end of the drill is where a Bur fits. This Bur is used in all forms of dentistry and may be diamond, or another type of cutting Bur. The function of the bur is to cut the tooth tissue! filling material etc in dentistry. The hand piece holds this 6w.
Since qualifying as a Dentist in 2004, I have found that using the dental drill in awkward areas of the mouth is a constant headache for dentists while they are performing technically difficult procedures.
My Idea is of a dental drill with a moving head (or bur system) to allow movement of the bur (the cutting part) to give the operator more ease of use. At the moment they are fixed contra angled, however, I know that a head that could move through the angles, whilst being straight to the holding part of the device1 would improve operator use. If a button could be pressed (at a comfortable and safe po&tion for the operator and patient) and the angle could be adjusted and set by the operator then it would be of great use to the operator.
The mouth can be a difficult place to work and a fixed angle hand piece is extremely limiting. Often if the angle could be changed it would be more comfortable for the operator and the patient.
Often these hand pieces contain lights (to increase the illumination of where the dentist is working) so a simple matter of an adjustable light to the angle of the head could be needed on these particular variations of the dental hand piece.
As well as high speed hand pieces their are slow speed hand pieces. I feel the changes stated above could be applied to these slow speed hand pieces also.
Instead of fixed angle hand pieces, I am proposing a variable angle hand piece that can be continuously changed and set during a procedure, to improve the operators ability in those difficult technical dental situations.
I am proposing that either the head can rotate or a mechanism that where the actual bur fits into the hole can run along a track or have some other mechanism to rotate around the angles to being straight to the rest of the hand piece. See pictures * 2 Drawings Drawing A a -denotes the bur b -denotes the hand piece c -denotes the light source illuminating the bur and what is being drilled This illustration shows the movement of the head of the handpiece to improve operator easy of use.
Drawing B This denotes a different way of achieving the same results. My idea involves being able to rotate the angle of which the bur is cutting a -denotes bur b -denotes hand piece This drawing shows not the head of the dental hand piece moving but the bur changing angles Drawing C d -denotes a possible button at any location comfortable and safe for both the patient and the operator. This button could change the angle during a procedure e -denotes a possible remote button/foot pedal that could act in changing this angle
