Abstract
A nutraceutical supplement in the form of a powder for administration to humans in a beverage or soft food. The nutraceutical powder preferably comprise fructooligosaccharides. The nutraceutical may also comprise and anti-oxidant, a skin rejuvenating active ingredient, a blood cholesterol lowering active ingredient, a blood pressure lowering active ingredient and additional ingredients such as sweetener, preservatives, colourings etc.
Description
Nutraceutical Supplement The present invention relates to a nutraceutical supplement, more specifically a nutraeeutical supplement in the form of a powder.
Nutraceuticals are foods or food products that provide health benefits.
Nutraceuticals are commonly provided in the form of dietary supplements (e.g. vitamin pills) and functional foods (e.g. iodine fortified salt and folic acid fortified flour). Nutraceuticals are becoming increasingly popular in Western society as individuals seek to improve their health and take care of themselves.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a nutraceutical supplement for administration to humans in the form of a powder for dissolution in a beverage or a soft food and for oral administration in the beverage or the soft food once per day. In the context of the present invention, the term "soft food" means a food with sufficient liquid content enabling dissolution of the nutraceutical supplement.
In use, a person need only add the nutraceuntical supplement to a beverage or soft food, e.g. orange juice or soup, stir to dissolve the nutraceuntical supplement in the beverage or the soft food, then consume the beverage or the soft food. Preferably, the nutraceutical supplements of the present invention have no discemable taste so that a person can enjoy a beverage or soft food containing the dissolved nutraceutical supplement as normal. This encourages a person to consume the nutraceutical supplement regularly.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the nutraceutical supplement comprises fructooligosaccharides. Fructooligosaccharides aid in the dissolution of the active ingredients present in the nutraceutical supplement in the beverage or the soft food. In addition, fructooligosaccharides contribute dietary fibre to a person's diet. * 2
The inventors have found that a person taking the nutraccuntical supplement every day will see health benefits such as lowered blood pressure, lowered blood cholesterol or clearer skin in as little as six to eight weeks.
The nutraceutical supplements of the present invention can be provided in a box containing multiple individual sachets, each sachet containing a portion of the nutraceutical supplement The nutraceutical supplements of the present invention can be formulated to deliver particular, individual health benefits or to deliver combined health benefits.
For example, the nutraceuticaj supplements of the present invention may comprise skin rejuvenating active ingredients or the nutraceutical supplements of the present invention may comprise blood cholesterol lowering active ingredients or the nutraceutical supplements of the present invention may comprise b]ood pressure lowering active ingredients. Additionally, the nutraceutical supplements of the present invention can be formulated to be free from artificial colours and flavours, suitable for vegetarians, diabetics, eoeliacs and anyone on a calorie controlled diet.
In embodiments in which the nutraceutical supplements of the present invention comprise skin rejuvenating active ingredients, the nutraceutical supplements may comprise at least one anti-oxidant. The at least one anti-oxidant may be selected from the list consisting of CoEnzynieQlo, astaxanthin, zeaxanthin, lycopene, and combinations thereof CoEnzymeQlO is a proven anti-ageing agent that can be found in many topical anti-ageing creams as it has both energising and anti-oxidative properties (Shiseido Research Center, Coenzytne QJO protects against oxidative stress-induced cell death and enhances the synthesis of basement membrane components in dermal and epidertnal cells, Biofactors, Sept-Oct 2009, p. 435-41).
CoEnzymeQ 10 has also been proven be effective when taken as an oral supplement (De Luca C, Deeva I, Mikhai'Chik E, Korkina L, Beneficial effects of pro-antioxidant based nutraceuticals in the skin rejuvenation techniques, Cell Mol Biol (Noisy-le-grand), 15Ih April 2007, p. 94-101).
Nutraeeutical supplements comprising skin rejuvenating active ingredients may comprise other skin rejuvenating active ingredient in addition to or instead of the * 3 at least one anti-oxidant. The at least one skin rejuvenating active ingredient may be selected from the list consisting of aloe vera, dairy peptides, retinol, hydroxycitric acid, collagen, vitamin E, lycopene. beta carotene, tyrosine, biotin, and combinations thereof. Dairy peptides suitable for use as a skin rejuvenating active ingredient include whey protein rich in lactoferrin.
Aloe vera aids skin regeneration, whilst dairy protein concentrates rich in lactoferrin can help reduce the appearance of blemishes for a clearer, healthier complexion.
In embodiments in which the nutraceutical supplements of the present invention comprise blood cholesterol lowering active ingredients, the nutraceutical supplements may comprise at least one active ingredient selected from the list consisting of plant sterol esters, oat beta glucan, barley beta glucan and combinations thereof.
Plant sterol esters are plant compounds with a similar chemical structure to cholesterol. Plant sterol esters are known to reduce the absorption of cholesterol in the human body (Alvin Berger, Peter JR Jones and Suhad S Abumweis, Plant sterols: factors affecting their efficacy and safety as functional food ingredients, Lipids in Health and Disease, 2004) and have been scientifically proven to help lower cholesterol when consumed as part of a healthy diet. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has approved plant sterol esters as one of the first food ingredients to have proven heart health benefits (European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), Scien4fic opinion on the substantiation of health claims related to plant sterols and plant stanols and maintenance of normal blood cholesterol concentrations, EPSA Journal 2010, p. 1813). Plant sterol esters are present in vegetable oils, nuts, seeds and grains, however, it may be difficult to consume a sufficient quantitiy to activate the cholesterol lowering effect (1.6 g).
In embodiments in which the nutraceutical supplements of the present invention comprise blood pressure lowering active ingredients, the nutraceutical supplements may comprise at least one active ingredient, such as dairy peptides.
Dairy peptides suitable for use as blood pressure lowering active ingredients include * 4 concentrated forms of isoleucine-proline-proline (IP?) oligopeptides, concentrated forms of valine-proline-proline (VPP) oligopeptides, and combinations thereof Elevated blood pressure can be caused by various factors, one of which is a constriction of blood vessels triggered by angiotensin 11. In the angiotensin converting reaction, called ACE', this hormone can cause blood vessels to constrict, or narrow, effectively raising blood pressure. Dairy peptides act as a natural blocker of this reaction, When the constriction is inhibited, elevation of blood pressure can be preventedand kept at a healthy level. Research by the British Journal of Nutrition has proven that dairy peptides are effective in the reduction of systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The study concluded that food or drink enriched with dairy peptides could assist in the prevention of hypertension in people with blood pressure that is above normal.
The nutraceutical supplements of the present invention may comprise further or alternative active ingredients selected from the list consisting of ascophyllu,n nodosurn, glucomannan, conjugated linoleic acid, zinc gluconate, magnesium gluconate, horsetail extract, docosahexaenoic acid and combinations thereof Whether the nutraceutical supplements of the present invention comprises at least one skin rejuvenating active ingredient, at least one anti-oxidant, at least one blood cholesterol lowering active ingredient, any other type of active ingredient, or a combination thereof, the amount of active ingredient present in the nutraceutical supplement will vary dependent on the specific active ingredient(s) used and the intended purpose of the specific active ingredient(s). The nutraceutical supplement of the present invention may comprise about 40 mg to about 80 mg of CoEnzymeQl 0, about 2 mg to about 6 mg of astaxanthin, about 2 mg to about 4 tug of zeaxanthin, about 8 mg to about 12 mg of lycopene, about 200 mg to about 300 mg of aloe vera, about 100mg to about 200mg of dairy peptides, about 0.5 pg to about 1.0 pg of retinol, about 0.3 g to about 0.6 g of hydroxycitric acid, about 2.5 g to about 3.5 g of collagen, about 5.0 mg to about 15.0 trig of vitamin E, about 8 tug to about 12 mg of lycopene, about 4.0 pg to about 6.0 pg of beta-carotene, about 0.4 g to about 0.6 g of tyrosine, about 50 pg to about 100 pg of biotin, about 0.25 g to about 0.75 g of ascophyllum nodosum, about 20 mg to about 30 mg of zinc gluconate, about 100 tug S 5 to about 300 mg of magnesium gluconate, about 150 mg to about 450 mg of horsetail extract, about 100 rig to about 200 mg of docosahexaenoic acid, about 1.0 g to about 2.0 g of glucomannan, about 1.0 g to about 1.5 g of conjugated linoleic acid, about 0.8 g to about 1.6 g of plant sterol esters, about 0.75 g to about 1.50 g of oat beta glucan, about 0.75 g to about 1.50 g barley beta glucan, or any combination thereof per portion of nutraceutical supplement.
