Abstract

A motor-generator having an electrical motor input, an electrical generator output and a rotor is tested by supplying input electrical power to the motor input, removing the input power for a first time and then reapplying the input power after a predetermined period. The speed of the rotor is monitored after the reapplication of the electrical power to diagnose a potential fault in the motor-generator if the indicated rotor speed is too high. The input power may be removed and reapplied more than once during the test. The rotor speed may be measured using an external rotor speed measuring device or an internal speed measuring device. The motor-generator may be used in a railway carriage to provide power to internal lighting etc.
