Description

Stringed Musical Instrument Statid
Field of the Invention
The present invention is in the field of musical instruments and, in particular, stands for stringed musical instruments, In particular, the invention relates to a stand for a stringed musical instrument wherein the means for engaging a pre-existing fixing point for a strap is movable relative to the fastening plate in order to brace the fastening plate against the stringed musical instrument. The invention also relates to a stand wherein at least one of the fastening plate or means for engaging a pre-existing fixing point for a strap comprises a fixing point for a strap, and a stand comprising means for holding a guitar pick. The invention further relates to a method for attaching a stand to a stringed musical instrument.
Background to the Invention
Guitar stands are useful items for musicians because without such a device, the musician has no way of storing the guitar in a stable manner when the instrument has been put down and is not in use. Guitar stands are well known and usually comprise a floor-based device for receiving said guitar when not in use. A key disadvantage of known guitar stands is that they tend to be bulky items and require relocation prior to each use of the guitar. Such an arrangement is clearly disadvantageous in the event that the guitar has been picked up and moved away from the position of the stand, for example, during a performance.
Stringed musical instrument stands which are arranged to support said instrument when in a deployed, standing position and are capable of remaining attached to said instrument when in a stored, playing position are known in the art. However, those in the art suffer from a number of problems, Known stands are often poorly attached, which can be problematic during physically active musical performances; cannot be adjusted easily to fit instruments of different shapes and sizes; cannot be used with different lug sizes; and may prevent the use of a strap by using the pre-existing fixing point for the strap as the means for attaching the stand to the musical instrument.
S
The present invention attempts to solve these and other problems with the prior art.
Summary of the Invention
In a first aspect the present invention provides a stand for a stringed musical instrument, the stand comprising a stand plate for supporting the instrument when in a deployed, standing position. Typically, the stand comprises a fastening plate attached to the stand plate and means for engaging a pre-existing fixing point for a strap attached to the fastening plate. Preferably, the means for engaging a pre-existing fixing point for a strap is movable relative to the fastening plate in order to brace the fastening plate against the stringed musical instrument.
The stand of the invention has the advantage that a single stand may be securely attached to stringed musical instruments of different sizes with a level of security not contemplated by the prior art. This is particularly advantageous when the stringed musical instrument is a -guitar, which are produced in a variety of shapes and sizes, and which can often be played in a more animated fashion than other stringed instruments. A stand that becomes detached or loose during a performance may damage the instrument, particularly if the musician goes to put the musical instrument down having not realised the stand is no longer attached, or may cause harm or injury to surrounding objects. For instance, a detached stand could be of significant danger to other musicians or audience members. The stand of the present invention is so well secured that in certain embodiments, the stand itself may comprise a fixing point for a strap.
Typically, the invention provides a stringed musical instrument stand, preferably a guitar stand (electric or acoustic), ukulele stand, or banjo stand, Typically, the stand plate is arranged to support the instrument when in a deployed, standing position and is capable of remaining attached to said instrument when in a stored playing position. Typically, the fastening plate is attached to the stand plate by a hinge.
In an embodiment the stand comprises means for pulling or pushing the means for engaging a pit-existing fixing point for a strap. Typically, the fastening plate comprises a base plate and a back plate. In a preferred embodiment, the means for pulling or pushing the means for engaging a pre-existing fixing point for a strap comprises a threaded screw. Preferably, the means for pulling or pushing the means for engaging a fixing point for a strap comprises two parallel mounted threaded screws. Typically, rotation of the threaded screws pushes or puiis the means for engaging a pit-existing fixing point for a strap. Other means for pulling or pushing the means for engaging a pie-existing fixing point for a strap are also contemplated, including, but not limited to, a ratchet, a spring (helical or leaf), an elastic band, or a pulley system. An advantage of using a threaded screw is that they may incrementally tightened to ensure that the stand is securely fixed in place but without applying excessive force to the pie-existing fixing point for a strap. Two parallel mounted screws lessen the likelihood of the stand coming loose during use.
In a preferred embodiment, the fastening plate comprises a back plate and a base plate.
Typically, the means for engaging a pie-existing fixing point for a sftap is attached to the base plate. Preferably, the back plate and the base plate are a single unitary structure.
Preferably, the base plate and the back plate are moulded as a single unit, preferably a single polymer unit. Typically, the base plate and back plate are substantially perpendicular to each other.
In an embodiment, the means for engaging a pie-existing fixing point for a strap comprises a bracing plate. Typically, the bracing plate comprises a cut-out for receiving a pre-existing fixing point for a strap. Preferably, the cut-out is substantially V-shaped. Preferably, the cut-out has an apex with a radius substantially similar to the radius of the pie-existing fixing point for a strap. Preferably, the radius of the apex is from about I mm to about S mm; more preferably from about 3 to about 7 mm, most preferably 5 mm. Typically, the cut-out is banked so that when it engages the pre-existing fixing point for a strap, the cut-out applies a force in a direction perpendicular to the face of the foot-plate as well as parallel thereto. This improves the bracing of the stand to the stringed musical instrument.
In a preferred embodiment, the bracing plate is slidably engaged with the fastening plate, S preferably slidably engaged with the base plate. Preferably, the means for engaging a pre-existing fixing point for a strap is movable in a direction substantially parallel to the major face of the base plate, preferably along the central axis of the base plate. The central axis of the base plate is a hypothetical line running along the centre of the base plate perpendicular to the major face of the back plate. Typically, the bracing plate is slidably engaged with the fastening plate by means of a track for receiving the bracing plate. Typically, the track is moulded into the base plate. Preferably, the bracing plate comprises a mating surface or surfaces for receiving the track. Typically, the bracing plate is engaged with the base plate such that the bracing plate moves in a direction substantially parallel to the major face of the base plate and, preferably, substantially perpendicular to the major face of the back plate. This improves the security of attachment between the stand and the stringed musical instrument.
In further embodiments of the invention, the base plate comprises a void for enabling a pre-existing fixing point for a strap to engage with the means for engaging a pre-existiizg fixing point for a strap. Typically, the void has a length, in the direction of the central axis of the base plate, greater than the length of the cut out in the same direction. During use, this aids engagement between the cut out and the pre-existing fixing point for a strap.
In a still further embodiment, at least one of the fastening plate or means for engaging a pre-existing fixing point for a strap comprises a fixing point for a strap, typically a strap lug.
In a second aspect, the invention provides a stand for a stringed musical instrument, the stand comprising a stand plate for supporting the instrument when in a deployed, standing position. The stand further comprises a fastening plate attached to the stand plate; and means for engaging a pre-existing fixing point for a strap attached to the fastening plate.
Preferably, at least one of the fastening plate or means for engaging a pre-existing fixing point for a strap comprises a fixing point for a strap.
Au advantage of providing a fixing point for a strap on at least one of the fastening plate or the means for engaging a fixing point for a strap is that it enables a strap to be used with the musical instrument even when a stand is attached. This makes playing the stringed musical instrument far more comfortable for the musician and allows the instrument to be played whilst standing.
In an embodiment, the fastening plate comprises a fit-st fixing point and a second fixing point. Typically, the fastening plate comprises a base plate and the base plate comprises the fixing points. Preferably, wherein the first fixing point is for receiving the strap of a left handed musician and the second fixing point is for receiving the strap of a right handed musician. Typically, the first and second fixing points are offset from the central axis of the fastening plate. It is understood that when refen'ing to a fixing point for receiving the strap of a left handed musician it is assumed that the instrument has been strung in the standard arrangement for a left handed musician, and vice-versa for a right handed musician, By providing a first fixing point and a second fixing point for left and right handed musicians the present invention may also be used by left handed musicians who string their instruments unconventionally. As will be appreciated, by providing multiple fixing points, a single stand may be used by musicians with different strapping preferences.
