Abstract

A feed compactor outlet 2 comprises a passage wall which comprises a portion 4 moveable with respect to a longitudinal axis of the feed compactor outlet 2 so as to vary or adjust a throat area of the passage. The passage wall may comprise a plurality of moveable portions 4 around the feed compactor outlet 2. The moveable portions 4 may pivot relative to the feed compactor outlet 2 and may taper, with their narrower ends forming the variable throat. A variable restrictor 8 may encircle the movable portions 4 and adjust their positions relative to the longitudinal axis of the feed compactor outlet 2. The variable restrictor 8 may comprise an elongate element which may be tightened around the moveable portions 4, with friction reducing elements such as pulleys, rollers, ball bearings, lubrication or a layer of low friction material between the variable restrictor 8 and the moveable portions 4. The feed compactor outlet 2 be fed by an auger and may discharge material to a reactor (12 fig. 2) such a pyrolysis and/or gasification reactor.
