Intellectual Properly Office is an operating name of the Patent Office www.ipo.gov.uk Title Fold-up Displays
Field of the Invention
[0001] The present invention relates to fold-up displays. Of particular interest are fold-up displays of the type that can be laid flat for printing on a display surface thereof. This allows printing directly onto a display surface of the display.
Background to the Invention
[0002] Typically displays which allow printing directly on to a display surface thereof, are single piece displays which are typically rigid and non-foldable. This is because printing directly onto a non-continuous surface (for example with fold lines etc) can result in unwanted discontinuities in the applied print. Such bulky, single-piece displays are also used to display information printed on a display surface of a display material such as a page/sheet.
[0003] Larger displays thus tend to be bulky because the necessity to print directly on a single piece which is rigid enough to stand means the display does not fold-up for convenience in transporting/storing.
[0004] Accordingly, it is desirable to provide a fold-up display, for example of the type which has a display surface upon which print can be directly applied, yet which can be collapsed to a folded configuration which is compact for transporting/storing.
Summary of the Invention
[0005] In one aspect, the present invention provides a fold-up display comprising a back panel with two side panels connected to it one on either side thereof, the side panels each being hingedly connected to the back panel by a vertical fold or score (line), the display further comprising horizontal fold or scorelines which run across the back panel and the side panels so that the entire display is moveable between collapsed and erected configurations by folding about the horizontal fold or scorelines, and the erected configuration is stabilised by relative movement of the back panel to the side panels by folding about at least one vertical fold or scoreline.
[0006] This provides an easy to erect configuration yet which folds substantially flat for transport/storage. The device is typically made of lightweight materials such as lightweight plastics paperboard, cardboard or the like.
[0007] Desirably the folding action about the horizontal fold or scorelines comprises a Z-folding action. This allows a very compact configuration when folded up. The Z-folding action may alternatively or additionally be along the vertical fold or scorelines.
Again this contributes to a very compact folded up configuration for storage/transport.
[0008] Suitably a brace is provided for holding at least one side panel in its erected configuration position. This provides stability when the device is standing. Suitably the brace runs between the two opposing side panels. The brace may run between the two opposing side panels when each is folded (forwardly or rearwardly) relative to the back panel. The brace may be provided as an integral part of the device. For example a brace panel may be provided that can be folded into place to brace the device.
[0009] A fold-up display of the invention may further comprise a wrap for holding the display in its collapsed configuration. The wrap is typically provided as a separate piece. It typically will be provided with fold or scorelines defined therein which allow it to wrap around the display in its collapsed configuration. Where the display comprises more than one part it is desirable that the wrap folds around all parts when they are (folded-up and) placed one on top of the other. A suitable retaining means, such one or more hoop and loop fasteners may be utilised to hold the wrap in its closed position.
[0010] The wrap may also function as a brace. This is a particularly convenient arrangement because the brace can be used to hold the product in its collapsed configuration when not in use and deployed as a brace when the parties erected. This reduces the number of constituent parts required.
[0011] Desirably the fold-up display further comprises a replaceable header panel.
Such a panel can be added and removed as desired. For example different panels with different preprinted materials may be used to display different information.
[0012] A fold-up display of the invention may further comprise a fold or scoreline that opens to allow a sheet of material to be inserted therein and closes again to grip the sheet and hold it in position. This means that material other than material preprinted on the display can be displayed quite easily and again is interchangeable as desired.
[0013] A fold-up display of the invention may further comprise one or more shelves for supporting products for display. This allows for a display array even though the device folds flat for transport/storage. In one arrangement the display of the invention may further comprise one or more display compartments for housing products to be displayed. This means that for example packs of products can be inserted into the device and held there while the display also displays suitable advertising material. This provides a very convenient point-of-sale display.
[0014] Such a fold-up display may be formed by two separate fold-up parts which interengage in an erect configuration to form the shelves or compartments.
[0015] The display is made up of one or more parts it is desirable that each part Z-folds. Means that all parts can be folded up neatly and packed together for storage/transport. In particular, with the lightweight nature of the materials which may be employed in the displays of the invention can be packed up and carried easily by one person.
[0016] The displays of the invention or any parts thereof may be made from a rigid material with opposing layers held together at discreet locations by suitable transverse members. Examples include corrugated and fluted materials. Such materials are useful because they have a construction where there are two separate layers held together. This means that one layer may be cut along a line allowing easy folding of the device while still remaining sturdy. Such a construction is suitable for allowing the display to be opened by folding for example for insertion and gripping of a sheet and display thereof as described above and in the detailed description below.
[0017] Because the displays of the invention may be folded flat and are made of print compatible materials, printed information may be directly printed onto a display surface of the display.
[0018] A display of the invention may have feet which are angled relative to the back panel. This can provide a more steady arrangement, particularly where the display is arranged to carry display products and thus further weight, for example where product is hung on the display. The display of the invention may have one or more hanging apertures defined therein so that products can be hung from the display.
[0019] With reference to the fold-up display of the present invention the side panels move together to form a display surface and the back panel acts as a support for the side panels.
[0020] Displays of the invention may be assembled into and form part of larger displays. For example the present invention also provides a fold-up display assembly comprising two parts each of which comprises a fold-up display according to the present invention and a further spanning part which is configured to span between the two parts. This allows for larger displays to be formed yet they can be collapsed easily and carried away easily.
[0021] The present invention extends to a display substantially as described herein and with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
[0022] The displays of the present invention may provide alternative display stands which may be utilised in place of more cumbersome and heavier displays which are conventionally used, particularly for temporary display.

Detailed Description of the Drawings
[0069] In this Description and above Figure 1 is used collectively for Figures IA to 10 and other Figure nos. are used in the same way. The terms vertical and horizontal are used in relation to the present invention to simply to indicate relative positioning, for example of fold or scorelines. It is understood that a display of the invention may be positioned in many different orientations (turned on its side or upside down) but for ease of reference the terms vertical/horizontal will be used with reference to the typical display position of the device I. For the header part I d of Figure 9 which unlike other parts has its longer axis in a horizontal position the term vertical is used with reference to the direction of the longer axis.
[0070] Figure 1 shows a display I. The display I comprises a back panel 3 and a (left) side panel 4 and a (right) side panel 5. The back panel 3 is separated respectively from the side panels 4 and 5 by score lines 11,10. The display I has a display surface 20 which can be confined to the back panel 3 or extend across onto side-panels 4 and 5 as desired. In the configuration shown in Figure Ia it is possible to put the display 1 through a suitable printer and print directly onto the surface 20. A base panel 7 extends downwardly from the back panel 3. Horizontal scorelines 13-16 run across the device 1. The scorelines 14-16 run across the back panel 3 and the side panels 4, 5. Because the scoreline 13 separates the base panel 7 from the remainder of the device, it needs only run across the back panel 3. The base panel 7 is an additional panel on the back panel 3 and is not connected to the side panels 4,5 being indirectly connected by back panel 3.
[0071] Each side panel 4,5 has at a lower end thereof feet 21 which are portions of the respective side panels which extend outwardly. Slots 6 are provided in each of the feet 21. A further scoreline 12 separates a brace or crosspiece 9 from the base panel 7.
The brace 9 has slots 8 therein. The brace 9 fits to the feet 21 by interengagement of the respective slots 6 and the respective slots 8 when the display 1 is erected as will be described in more detail below.
[0072] Slots 2 are provided in the top of the display. The slots 2 allow for the fitting of a header panel 18.
[0073] Figure lB shows a plan view of a wrap for the display of Figure 1A in a flat configuration. The wrap 17 folds or wraps about the display I in a folded configuration thereof to hold the display I in a folded up configuration as will be described below.
The wrap 17 has a series of fold lines 22, which allow it to be folded around the display 1.
[0074] Figure IC is a plan view of the header panel 18 in a flat configuration. The header panel 18 has a slot 19 therein. It also has scorelines 23 which allow it to fold and an additional short side panel 24.
[0075] Figure 1 D is a perspective view of the display of Figure IA in a partially folded-up (collapsed) configurationS As is desirable but all embodiments of the present invention it shows a Z-folding arrangement. To achieve Z-folding it is desirable that every second fold or scoreline allows folding of in an opposite direction. In particular it is desirable that the horizontal fold or scorelines allow the device one to fold as shown in Figure 1 D. For example the horizontal fold lines 12, 13 and 15 are on the same face while scorelines 14 and 16 are on an opposite face. This results in an accordion type folding and a compact folded-up configuration.
[0076] Figure IE is a perspective view of the display of Figure IA lying flat but in a partially folded-out (erected) configuration. In this configuration the side panels 4, 5 have been folded about respective fold lines 11,10. They therefore extend rearwardly will respect to the back panel 3.
[0077] Figure I F is a perspective view of the display of Figure IA standing up in a fully folded-out (erected) configuration and with the brace 9 in place by folding base panel 7 rearwardly to an approximately horizontal position and then folding brace panel 9 so that the brace panel 9 braces between feet 21 and thus side panels 4,5 thus providing a rigidity to the erect display structure. In particular slots 6 in feet 21 and slots 8 in brace panel 9 allow the parts to be interlocked. Base panel 7 forms a support for the entire display I as it will rest on a floor etc. [0078] Figure 10 shows the header panel 18 being slid into slots 2 on the device 1.
Different header panels 18 can be used to display different information as being detachable. The panels 18 can be interchangeable. For example different advertising materials may be displayed for different promotions.
[0079] It will be appreciated that although the device I is shown without any material printed thereon, any suitable material can be applied by printing directly onto the display 1 for example onto display surface 20.
[0080] Figure 2A is a perspective view of a second display of the invention similar to that in Figure IA -G but with additional folding about vertical axes and Figure 2B is a plan view from above of the display of Figure 2A. in the erect (display) configuration of the display I the side panels 4, 5 have been folded in opposite directions so that the is respective feet 21 are on opposite sides of the back panel 3. The base panel 7 is provided in two parts 7a,7b which fold respectively toward and engage feet 21 on opposing sides of the display in the manner described above. In this case respective brace panels 9a,9b each engage one foot 21, thus stabilising the device in its oppositely folded erect position. Such a configuration is typically useful to display information from both sides of the display 1.
[0081] Figure 3 shows a perspective view of how a display I of Figures 1 or 2 is folded up for transport. Firstly the device I is Z-folded as shown in Figure 1 D so it is in a substantially flat folded configuration as shown in Figure 3. Then the wrap 17 is folded about the collapsed device 1 as shown to form a retaining loop about the device 1. The preformed folds 22 are arranged to give the wrap 17 the ability to wrap around the device 1. Header 18 may also be attached as shown. Interengament means can be used to hold the wrap closed and/or the header panel in place. For example hook and loop fasteners may be used such as VelcroTM patches.
[0082] Figure 4A is a perspective view of a third display of the invention similar to that in Figures 1 and 2 but with additional folding functionality about vertical axes and Figure 4B is a perspective view of the display of Figure 4A showing the display folded using the additional folding functionality. In particular in the embodiment the back panel 3 is split by a fold line 23 into two parts 3a and 3b. The back panel 3 can then be folded about foldline 23 to give the configuration of Figure 4B. In the embodiment side panels 4,5 become front display panels and panel 3 becomes a central support spine with portions 3a and 3b abutting each other. The base panel 7 is again provided in two parts 7a, 7b which lie flat on the ground and form a base for the display 1. Again brace panel's 9a, 9b engage the respective feet 21 supporting the device. A header panel 18 is optionally fitted.
[0083] Figure 5 shows a variation of a display I of the invention similar to that shown in earlier figures. The same reference numerals are used for similar parts.
[0084] Figure 5A is a plan view of a fourth display I of the invention in a flat configuration. The display 1 has a rear panel 3 and side panels 4 and 5. Horizontal score or fold lines 12-16 are provided and allow Z-folding of the device 1. Vertical socre or fold lines 10,11 allow side panels 4,5 to be folded with respect to the back panel 3.
In this embodiment the stand each side panel 4,5 has two feet portions 21 which extend on respective sides of the panels 4,5. Because of this the lower part of the back panel 3 is provided with cut-away portions 30 which accommodate the feet portions 21.
The feet portions 21 which will extend rearwardly in the erected configuration of the device are provided with slots which cooperate with a brace.
[0085] Figure SB is a plan view of a wrap 17 (for the display of Figure IA) in a flat configuration. The wrap 17 has fold lines 22 which allow itto fold to wrap about the display I as will be described below. Slots 25 are provided in the wrap 17. The wrap 17 is also configured to act as a brace.
[0086] Figure SC is a perspective view from a front side thereof of the display I of Figure 5A standing up in a fully folded-out (erected) configuration while Figure SD is a perspective view from a rear side thereof. Figure 51 is a side elevational view thereof.
Figure SE is a perspective view of the display of Figure 5A standing up in a fully folded-out (erected) configuration and with the wrap 17 of Figure SB in place and functioning as a brace. In particular slots 25 on the wrap 17 allow it to engage with slots 6 on the rearward feet 21. The wrap 17 thus extends across the rear of the display holding the side panels 3 at a set angle to the back panel 3 and thus bracing the display I in a standing configuration.
[0087] Figure SF is a perspective view of the display of Figure 5A in a partially folded-up (collapsed) configuration. The device I has had the wrap 17 removed and has had side panels 4,5 folded to their position in Figure 5A. As with earlier embodiments the display I then Z-folds to a compact configuration and Figure 5G shows a perspective view of the device 1 folded up for storage/transport. The wrap 17 now instead of functioning as a brace functions as a wrap to hold the display in its compact collapsed folded-up configuration. Again retaining means such as hook and loop fasteners may be utilised to hold the wrap 17 closed about the display 1. Figure 5H shows a top plan view of the device 1 folded up for transport/storage.
[0088] Figure 6 (in particular when compared to Figure 51) shows a side elevational view of an alternative display I of the present invention. The device 1 of Figure 6 has two main differences from that disclosed in Figure 5. Firstly the feet 21 are angled with respect to the vertical axis of the display 1 thus causing the display 1 to lean in one direction (for example backward) when erected. Extending from the rear of the display I is a display panel 35 (which is scored and folds with the device 1) which has apertures 31 defined therein to accept hooks for hanging product therefrom.
[0089] Figure 7A is a plan view of another display of the invention in a flat configuration. As before similar reference numerals have been used for similar parts.
The display 1 has a back panel 3 separated from side panels 4,5 by fold or scorelines 11,10. Again the display has forward and rearward feet 21. Slots 6 are provided in the rearward feet 21. A base panel 7 is again provided. A brace panel 9 is also provided as an integral part of the display 1. Slots 8 are provided in the brace panel 9 for engaging in slots 6 in feet 21 as with earlier embodiments and as described below. Horizontal fold or scorelines 14,13 and 12 enable a Z-folding action for collapsing of the display 1.
The display I is shorter than prior models and thus may be more suited for display on an elevated surface such as that of a table etc. Figure 7B is a perspective view of the display of Figure 7A in a flat configuration but with a sheet 36 attached thereto. In this embodiment the fold or scoreline 14 opens upon folding about it, as best seen in Figure 7B and a display sheet 36, for example for displaying printed material on the sheet is inserted into the fold or scoreline 14 and is gripped in place when the fold or scoreline 14 is closed again. This means that when the display is erected as seen from the front perspective view of Figure 7C or the rear perspective view of Figure 7D, the display I is configured to display the information on the sheet 36. This means the display can be used interchangeably to display different information such as different adverts. Figure 7E shows a perspective view of a device 1 of Figure 7A folded up for transport.
[0090] Figure 8A is a plan view of a first part Ia of a two-part display I of the invention in a flat configuration. The first part I a comprises a back panel 3 and side panels 4 and 5. The side panels 4,5 are hingedly connected to the back panel 3 by vertical fold or scorelines 11,10. Horizontal score lines 13-16 allowforfolding (in particularZ-folding) as with previous embodiments. The side panels 4,5 have each provided with a series of downwardly angled spaced apart slots 40-44 for engaging with the second part I b.
Feet 21 with slots 6 are again provided. Back panel 3 is provided with spaced apart slots 51-53 for engagement with the second part I b of the display. The side panels are profiled to engage with and hold the second part I b of the display. A header panel 18 is provided.
[0091] Figure 8B is a plan view of a second (front) part I b of a two-part display of the invention in a flat configuration. The front part comprises a panel 60 of material which has a series of horizontal scores 61-67 defined therein. At the centre of three of the score lines 61, 63 and 65 is a push-out tab respectively labelled 71,72,73. Three apertures 74, 75, 76 are defined in the front part I b. Engagements slots 85 are defined in the bottom end of the panel I b. Further engagements slots 86 are defined in the top end of panel I b. Slots 80-82 are provided within the panel body. All of the slots 85, 86, 80-82, are provided to allow engagement of the second part I b with the first part I b as will be described in more detail below.
[0092] Figure 8C is a plan view of a brace 90 for the first-part I a of the display as shown in Figure 8A. It has slots 91 and gripping protrusions 92 which allow it to engage with the first part 1 a of the display 1. Figure 3D is a plan view of a wrap 95 for both parts la,lb of the display shown in a flat configuration. The wrap 95 has fold or scorelines 96 to allow it to fold/wrap about the other parts. Figure 8E is a perspective view of the first part la of the display I in a partially folded-out erected configuration and with the brace 90 in place. The sides 4,5 have been folded forward relative to the back panel 3 by folding about fold or scorelines 11,10. Brace 90 has been engaged by aligning slots 91 with slots 40 and pushing the two pieces together to interengage the bace 90 in the first part la as shown in Figure 8E.
[0093] Figure 8F is a perspective view of the first part Ia of the display as shown in Figure 8E and the second part I b being brought together. The second part has been Z- folded into a partially folded state by folding about the horizontal fold or scorelines 61- 67. The two parts 1 a and I b mate to form the assembled configuration shown in Figure 8G.
[0094] In particular slots 86 of part lb engage in slots 44 of part la. Similarly slots 80- 82 respectively engage in slots 41-43. Tabs 71-73 protrude from part lb and respectively engage in slots 51-53. Finally slots 85 of part lb engage in slots 6 in the feet 21 of part Ia. Figure 8G shows the two parts Ia,Ib of the display I in an assembled configuration (and in a fully folded-out (erected) configuration). It will be appreciated that the display I now comprises a series of product supporting surfaces in the form of shelves/ledges formed by the joining of the two parts together. More specifically the display now comprises a series of (3) product compartments into which product can be placed (through apertures 74-76). This means loose product for example individual product items can be displayed without any need for the product to have any securing means (such as a hook, adhesive etc) to hold it to the display I to allow it to be displayed.
[0095] Figure 8H shows the two-parts Ia, 1 b of the display I disassembled and collapsed into a flat configuration. It will be appreciated that each part la, lb folds into a flat configuration as has been described for other embodiments. In particular, both parts Z-fold. The wrap 95 of Figure 8D is wrapped around and in place to hold the folded-up display in its collapsed configuration.
[0096] Figure 9A is a plan view of a first column part Ic of a further display of the invention in a flat configuration. It comprises a back panel 3 and two side panels 4,5.
Vertical fold or scorelines 10,11 hingedly connect the side panels 5,4 to the back panel 3. Horizontal fold or scorelines 12-16 allow the column part Ic to be folded up by Z-folding. It has a recessed tab 98 on a top end thereof and recesses 99 along one side therof which are aligned with corresponding tabs 100.
[0097] Figure 9B is a plan view of a wrap 17 for the display of Figure 9 in a flat configuration and having fold or scorelines 22 defined therein.
[0098] Figure 9C is a plan view of a header part I d for the display of Figure 9 in a flat configuration. The other part comprises two panels 101, 102 separated by a vertical scoreline 103. Horizontal scorlines 12-16 are also provided to allow folding-up of the part Id. Slots 104 are provided to allow the header part Id to be engaged with respective column parts Ic.
[0099] Figure 9D is a perspective view of the column part Ic of Figure 9A in a partially folded-up collapsed configuration showing how it Z-folds for storage about the horizontal scorelines 12-16.
[00100] Figure 9E is a perspective view of the column part 1 c of Figure 9A lying flat but in an erected configuration where tabs 100 have been interlocked in apertures 99 thus giving the column part a triangular configuration.
[00101] Figure 9F is a perspective view of a display I of the invention with assembly in progress with two column parts lc and I header part ld, all parts being in a folded out (erected) configuration. The column parts Ic act as legs and the header part I c as a span so that when assembled as shown in Figure 9G it spans between the two column parts Ic and forms an arch structure. In the assembled structure the tabs 98 at the top of each column part I c are inserted into slots 104 in the header part, thus interengaging the parts. This gives an alternative and innovative display structure.
[00102] Figure 9H shows a perspective view of the display 1 of Figure 9G with each part being also being partly folded for storage thereof; and Figure 91 shows a plan view of the parts of the display disassembled and collapsed into a flat configuration and with two wraps 17 of Figure 90 in place to hold the parts of the folded-up display in its collapsed configuration.
[00103] Desirably all of the parts, such as display, wrap and header panel are made from similar materials.
[00104] The parts of the present invention are designed to flatten down to a small size for easy transport storage and carrying by any one person. The device can be made from a desired material. These include plastics which can make the display I completely waterproof proof and robust. The displays of the present invention provide a cheaper alternative to permanent or semi-permanent stands. The displays of the present invention are easily erected by a single person. Having the wrap with a dual function also minimises waste and increases the functionality of the display without increasing its component parts. Displays of the invention desirably have a Z-folding configuration to allow folding flat when been folded up after use. It will be appreciated that the devices of the invention can be collapsed easily and carried by one person.
[00105] Figure 10 shows a perspective view of a construction of material which is very suitable for use with the present invention. The construction of the material is shown in a panel 110 which has an upper layer 111 and a lower layer 112 joined together by corrugations 113. The skilled person will appreciate that if the material is suitably scored (typically any given score would be made at the same location on both layers 11) it will fold. With a construction where the opposing layers 111 and 113 are separated by one or more joining members, (such as corrugations 113) it is possible to cut through one layer, such as for example along line 114, which will also then allow the construction to fold while retaining the integrity of the construction. Folding action will cause the panel 110 to open and it can be opened, have a material inserted (such as with sheet 36 above in Figure 7B) and gripped by closing again. It will thus be appreciated that while corrugated material such as that shown can be utilised, any rigid material with opposing layers held together at discreet locations by suitable transverse members will work in this way and is desirable. For example the layers could be held apart by simple linear cross-members which are spaced apart.
[00106] The words "comprises/comprising" and the words "having/including" when used herein with reference to the present invention are used to specify the presence of stated features, integers, steps or components but do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, integers, steps, components or groups thereof.
[00107] It is appreciated that certain features of the invention, which are, for clarity, described in the context of separate embodiments, may also be provided in combination in a single embodiment. Conversely, various features of the invention which are, for brevity, described in the context of a single embodiment, may also be provided separately or in any suitable sub-combination.
