Description
A Picture Light
Description
The present invention relates to a picture light for illuminating artwork.
Artwork such as a picture or a painting is typically illuminated by the use of a picture light.
Known picture lights comprise a housing attached to an arm which is secured to a frame of the artwork or to a structure, such as a wall, on which the artwork hangs. The housing is to electrically wired and is provided with a light bulb. The housing is further formed with an aperture configured to face the artwork such that when the light bulb is switched on the artwork is illuminated.
A disadvantage with known picture lights is that the light emitted through the aperture of the housing either illuminates areas surrounding the artwork, such that a viewer's attention is not primarily focused on the artwork, or the emitted light illuminates only a central part of the artwork, so that the artwork is not properly displayed to its full advantage.
The present invention seeks to provide a picture light for artwork that overcomes or substantially alleviates the problems mentioned above.
According to the present invention, there is provided a picture light for illuminating artwork comprising a light source and a shade, wherein a micro-louvre filter is mounted to the shade to control the spread of light emitted from the light source through said filter.
Preferably, the light source comprises at least one light omitting diode.
Conveniently, the at least one light omitting diode is attached to a light source member.
In one embodiment, the shade is formed with a track for receiving the light source member.
In another embodiment, the shade is formed with a plurality of tracks for receiving the light source member so that the angle of the light source member can be altered.
The shade may be formed with a track for receiving the micro-louvre filter.
Preferably, the shade is formed with a plurality of tracks for receiving the micro-louvre filter so that the angle of the micro-louvre filter can be altered.
Conveniently, the micro-louvre filter comprises a sheet of material incorporating light impervious elements configured to block the path of light incident on the filter at an angle greater than a predetermined angle relative to light that is incident on the filter at an angle of 90° degrees to the filter surface.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of illuminating artwork using a picture light comprising a light source and a shade, the method including the step of mounting a micro-louvre filter to the shade to control the spread of light emitted from the light source through said filter.
Preferably, the method includes the step of selecting a micro-louvre filter from a plurality of micro-louvre filters each operable to block light incident on the filter at a different angle to the surface of said filter.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 sho\vs cross-sectional view of a picture light according to the present invention; Figure 2 shows a perspective vie\v of the picture light shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 shows a side view of the picture light in use; and Figure 4 shows a front planar view of the picture light in use.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown in Figure 1 a picture light I for illuminating arvork such as a painting or a picture. The picture light 1 comprises a housing 2, also referred to as a shade, a light source 3 and a filter 4. The housing 2 is pivotally connected to an arm 5 which is provided with attachment means (not shown) so as to enable the picture light 1 to be attached to the artwork which is to be illuminated, or a structure, such as a wall, on which the artwork hangs.
Figure 2 shows a transparent view of the housing 2 wherein the dashed lines indicate concealed features. The housing 2 comprises an arched sheet 6 which is preferably made out of metal, and side walls 7, 8 disposed at either end of the arched sheet 6. The arched sheet 6 and the side walls 7, 8 define an aperture 9 which extends in a direction parallel to a longitudinal axis of the housing 2.
On an outer surface of the housing 2, a connection element 10 is provided which pivotally connects the housing 2 to the arm 5.
On an inner surface of the housing 2, there is provided two opposing filter tracks 12a, 12b and two opposing light source tracks ha, lIb that are parallel to the longitudinal axis of the housing 2. The two filter tracks l2a, 12b are configured to hold the filter 4 and the two light source tracks II a, 1 lb are configured to hold the light source 3. Although the illustrated embodiment only shows one set of filter tracks and one set of light source tracks, it shall be appreciated that the inner surface of the housing 2 may be formed with a plurality of filter tracks and/or light source tracks so that the filter 4 and the light source 3 can be angled relative to the housing 2.
The filter 4 and the light source 3 are configured such that they are inserted into the housing by sliding them into their respective tracks. Therefore, if the filter 4 or the light source 3 need to be angled, or if the filter and the light source need to be moved closer to one another, one of the side walls 7, 8 of the housing 2 can be removed such that the filter and/or the light source 3 can be slid out and re-inserted into the preferred tracks.
The housing 2 is further provided with electrical supply and the light source 3 preferably comprises two parallel tape strips of light emitting diodes (LEDs) 14 attached to a light source member 15 as can be appreciated in Figure 2. The tape strips of LEDs 14 are provided with a sticky back which adheres to the light source member 15. The LEDs 14 are provided along the whole length of the light source member 15 such that the LEDs 14 extend along the length of the aperture 9.
Preferably, the LEDs 14 arc a combination of red, green and blue LEDs, however it shall be appreciated that white LEDs or any other types of LEDs can be used.
Furthermore, it is also intended within the scope of the invention that the LEDs can be arranged into any feasible pattern and so the LEDs is not restricted to being configured into two parallel roivs as illustrated in Figure 2.
The filter 4 has the same construction as those commonly known as privacy filters that are attached to computer monitors to effectively restrict viewing of the display screen to the user only, i.e. the person looking at the screen from a position directly in front of it. Any data or images appearing on the screen will not be visible to anyone viewing the screen from an angle. One such filter is manufactured by 3M and employs micro-louvre technology to block light emitted from the screen when the screen is viewed at a certain angle relative to the surface of the screen. Versions of the fili are available with micro-louvres inclined at different angles, for example by 20°, 30° or 60°.
The Apphcant has found that, surprisingly, filters of the type described above can be used to control the spread of light emitted from a light source so as to effectively and precisely control the hghting effect of an artwork, such as a painting, hanging on a wall. More specifically, the lighting effect can be controlled using such filters so as to effectively frame' the artwork with hght producing a visually dramatic effect and preventing stray light rays from illuminating areas of wall surrounding the artwork.
By selecting a micro-louvre film with particular louvre angles, a picture light I can be customised to a particular artwork.
The filter 4 restricts emitted light in two planes; the first plane being perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the housing and the second plane being parallel to the longitudinal axis of the housing, as can be appreciated from Figures 3 and 4, respectively. Figure 3 illustrates how the light waves (shown as dashed arrows) are filtered in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the housing 2 such that, light emitted from the light source 3 through the aperture 9 does not go beyond the top or the bottom edge of the artwork 20. Figure 4 illustrates how the emitted light is filtered so as to not illuminate adjacent areas to the left and right sides of the artwork 20. Thus, the present invention provides a picture light wherein the emitted /0 light is filtered such that it illuminates the whole of the artwork but prevents light from escaping to areas surrounding the artwork.
Although embodiments of the invention have been shown and described, it will be appreciated by those persons skilled in the art that the foregoing description should /5 be regarded as a description of preferred embodiments only and that other embodiments that fall within the scope of the appended claims are considered to
form part of this disclosure.
