Abstract

A garment 108 for absorbing dribble (100, figure 2) comprises an absorbent pad mounted on an upper chest region 110, the pad comprising a first, outermost layer (102) comprising a material with good wicking properties, a second layer (104) comprising bamboo cotton velour, and a third layer (106) comprising a waterproof laminate. Bamboo cotton velour is used for its antibacterial properties. The first layer preferably comprises a polar microfleece and may match or coordinate with the garment. The third layer preferably comprises a polyurethane laminate and may be cup-shaped to contain moisture. The garment may be used by a baby and may be a t-shirt, jersey, dress, sleep suit or any baby garment including an upper chest region. Alternatively the garment may be suitable for disabled or elderly adults.

Description

Garments with dribble absorbent chest area [1) The present invention relates to baby garments and in particular to the problem of drIbbling babies constantly wetting their garments. The product can also be adapted to aid people that experience disabilities where dribbling is prevalent.
[2J US 5666665 to Norgado discloses a baby bib dribble roil for attaching to a fiat baby bib. The roil comprIses soft, absorbent fabric, (terrycloth, quilting, or the like), to catch the liquid from babyts mouth when drinking or dribbling. The outside of the roil has Velcro patches that allow positioning on the bib wherever is needed to catch the drips. Periodically or between feeds, the roll of wet fabric can be removed from the bib, leaving It dry and wearable for longer. The roll of material can be unsnapped for washing.
[3) 3? 10130908 to Tanaike discloses a stay-dry bib capable of absorbing dribble without becoming damp. Dribble passes through a first face cloth layer and is absorbed by a second absorptive polymer layer. A third layer comprises the reverse face of the second polymer layer, which is further laminated with a material impermeable to dribble such as polyethylene, polyester, nylon, rayon, paper or cotton. The bib promotes welfare of the baby.
I
14) VS 2010024090 to Fineli discloses a garment with a bib attachment which consists of a garment body having a front, opposed first and second sides, an upper end, a neck-receiving opening formed in the upper end of the garment body, a first arm stall formed in the upper end of the garment body on a first side of the neck-receiving openlng, and a second arm stall formed in the upper end of the garment body on a second side of the neck-receiving opening First and second pockets are formed in the upper end of the garment body on either side of the neck-receiving opening. A bib is formed from a first extension extending into the first pocket and a second extension extending into the second pocket. The first and second extensions are detachably secured to the garment within the first and second pockets, respectively, suspending the bib on the front of the garment body under the neck-receiving opening.
[5) it can be seen from the forgoing that there is a prevalent need to catch dribble in an attractive and easy way. It would be advantageous to have a garment which could absorb drIbble until it is time for the garment to be changed, without the need to cover the garment with a specific dribble-catching garment such as a bib. It would be further advantageous for such a garment to be hygienic and prevent bacteria from developing in the dribble catching area.
ç6j it is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a garment which catches and absorbs dribble for the duration of a day, protects the wearer from wetness caused by dribble, and prevents bacteria from developing in the absorbed dribble.
[7) To this end, a garment for absorbing dribble is disclosed, comprising: a garment having an upper chest region, and an absorbent pad mounted on said region, the pad comprising: a first, outermost layer comprising a material with good wicking properties; a second layer comprising bamboo cotton velour; and a third layer comprising a waterproof laminate.
[8) An advantage of the present invention is that the wearer is kept dry and dribble rash is prevented. A further advantage is that there is no need to cover the wearer's clothing with a bib. A yet further advantage is that bacteria and unpleasant smells are prevented from developing by the properties of the bamboo velour.
[9] The invention can be better understood with reference to the following drawings, in which: [10) Figure 1 shows an embodiment of the present invention; and [11) Figure 2 shows a cross section of the absorbent area of the present invention.
Deiiled scrption of the Invention [12) in a preferred embodiment of the invention, shown in Figures 1 and 2 wherein like numerals refer to like components, a garment for absorbing dribble 100 is disclosed comprising: a garment 108 having an upper chest region 110, and an absorbent pad mounted on said region, the pad comprising: a first, outermost layer 102 comprising a material with good wicking properties; a second layer 104 comprising bamboo cotton velour; and a third layer 106 comprising a waterproof laminate.
(l3j It is envisaged that the garment is for use by a baby and therefore that the garment is suitable for wearing by a baby, that is, a t-shirt, jersey, dress, sleep suit, or any baby garment including an upper chest region. However, the invention is also intended to include garments for adults, for example disabled or elderly adults who may also encounter a dribble problem.
(141 Preferably, the first layer comprises polar microfleece, An advantage of this is that it is a soft material which will not irritate a baby's skin on contact. A further advantage is that t has extremely good wicking properties and will draw in the moisture from dribble to the second layer.
Preferably, the first layer matches or coordinates with said garment to create the look of a regular garment.
[153 When a baby wears the garment and dribbles, the dribble is wicked by the fIrst, outer layer and drawn into the next layer, the second bamboo cotton velour layer. The saliva absorbed in the bamboo cotton velour remains suspended in the fibres of the velour until the garment is washed. Bamboo cotton velour also has antibacterial properties and thereby prevents the dribble absorbed therein from developing bacteria which can cause infections and bad odours.
[163 Preferably the third layer comprises polyurethane laminate although it may also be other flexible waterproof materials. The third layer is preferably cup-shaped to contain moisture. The shape of the third layer may comprise raised edges for containing moisture, or may comprise a rounded bowl-like or cup-like shape, or both, although it may be flat.
(173 Preferably the garment comprises poppers as known in the art, or buttons or other fastening means, which are positioned close to the neck of the garment, and which open to allow the garment to be put on easily, and close to hold the garment close to the chest and ensure that dribble falling from the mouth is caught by the absorbent pad and does not drip beneath it to the skin.
(183 The absorbent pad is preferably shaped as shown in the figures for efficient catching of most dribble, although it may also be other shapes under the scope of the invention.
