Abstract
249,152. Kignell, E. H., and Kignell, E. P. March 14, 1925, [Convention date]. Regenerators having the regenerating material or filling with passages therethrough terminating at two ends of the filling, are provided at each of these ends with continuously rotating valve devices adapted to conduct one or more fluids through a plurality of passages of the material and simultaneously to permit another fluid to pass through other passages of the material. As shown adapted for three different fluids the apparatus comprises a casing 1 through which passes one fluid a and which contains the regenerating material 2; arranged within this casing are an annular inlet 3b for a second fluid b supplied through a lateral pipe 5b, and a central circular inlet 3c for the third fluid c supplied through a lateral pipe 5c. Corresponding outlets 4b, 4c are provided and the inlet and outlets are governed by rotary valve discs 7, 8, having openings 10a, 10b, 10c, Fig. 2, for the three fluids a, band c respectively. Attached to the discs 7, 8 are radial plates 9 separating the openings and bearing against the regenerating material 2, and the discs are secured to a shaft 11 journaled in a central pipe 12 so that when the discs are rotated each part of the regenerating material will in turn be passed by the different fluids. The discs are given a slow continuous rotation as by providing vanes in the openings so that the discs are rotated by the fluids passing through the apparatus, or they may be driven from pumps, fans &c. used to force the fluids through the apparatus. The regenerating material may consist of metal, glass, brick &c. and may have the shape of plane or corrugated plates, pipes, balls &c. The passages in the regenerative material may or may not be axial and the openings in the two valve discs may be different in size, shape and position. A modification is described adapted for two gases, in which fans with adjustable blades are arranged within the casing 1, the valve discs are provided with sealing strips, and perforated pipes supplying compressed air or steam for cleaning are arranged within the regenerating material.
