Abstract

Means for controlling the condition, such as heat and pressure, of exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine in the exhaust system of an engine are disclosed. The means comprises at least one adiabatic engine, which may be either a turbine 6 or rotary Wankel engine, located in the exhaust system, means for varying the speed of the adiabatic engine, means for bypassing the adiabatic engine, bypass valve 7 and means for controlling the means for varying the speed and the bypassing means based on the output of sensors which detect parameters that are indicative of the exhaust gas condition. The arrangement controls the back pressure and hence heat in the exhaust system between the adiabatic engine and the internal combustion engine. A catalytic convertor is located in the exhaust tract downstream of the engine and upstream of the adiabatic engine and the arrangement can therefore be used to effectively control the temperature of the exhaust gas reaching the catalytic convertor so that the catalytic convertor can be maintained at an optimal operating temperature
