Description
CAR SEAT BASE WITH INDICATOR DEVICE FOR SENSING IF
A SUPPORT LEG IS IN POSITION
[001] The present invention relates generally to a car seat base, especially to a car seat base equipped with an indicator device for sensing and assuring whether a support leg thereof has been safely locked in a correct position.
[002] In order to facilitate car seat installment in a vehicle and to improve performance of a car seat during front impact vehicular collisions, a seat arrangement like that disclosed in U.S. Patent Nos. 7,753,445, 6,817,665, 5,487,588, 4,480,470 or 7,097,245 commonly includes a seat base into which a car seat can be detachably connected and supports a leg which is pivotally mounted at one end under the base. The support leg is telescopic so as to have an adjustable length and can be securely locked at a selected length.
[003] The top end of the support leg is provided with a fold latch arrangement which is automatically engaged when the support leg has been rotated from a stored position to an operative position. The arrangement includes a push-button type release feature to facilitate easy folding. As the support leg is always pivoted and rotated beneath the seat base, it is difficult for a user to verity whether the support leg has been firmly and safely locked in the operative position. If the locking of the support leg has failed then this would endanger the baby-occupant if the vehicle brakes suddenly when at high speed.
[004] To solve the above-mentioned shortcoming, the present invention provides a car seat base with indicator device. The device has a car seat base including an upper face, a rear end, and a front end. The upper face may be contoured for detachably supporting and anchoring a car seat, the rear end may have an ISO-FIX connector for connection to a vehicle seat, and the front end is lockably connected to a support leg.
[005] The support leg has an upper end and a lower distal end for engaging a vehicle floor, and has a stowed. position when stowed under the car seat base and a deployed position for supporting the car seat base at the front end.
[006] The device includes an indicator device which may be installed within the front end ofthe car seat base. When the support leg has been positioned in the deployed position, the indicator device can be actuated by the upper end of the support leg and then expresses a signal to a user for assuring that the support leg is correctly installed in the deployed position.
[007] The accompanying drawings, which are included to provide a further understanding of the invention, illustrate embodiments of the invention and together with the description serve to explain the principles of the invention. In the drawings: [008] FIG. 1 is a side view showing an embodiment of the car seat base according to the present invention; [009] FIG. 2 is a perspective exploded view showing the car seat base according to the present invention; [010] FIG. 3 is a left-front perspective view of the car seat base according to the present invention; [011] FIG. 4 is a side view schematically showing the initial step for installation of the support leg; [012] FIG. 5 is a side view schematically showing the next step for installation of the support leg; [013] FIG. 6 is a front view showing the indicator device and the installation of the support leg; [014] FIG. 7. is a cross-sectional view showing the initial step of installation of the support leg; [015] FIG. 8. is a cross-sectional view showing the final step of installation of the support leg; [016] FIG. 9. is a cross-sectional view showing an alternative embodiment of the car seat base; and [017] FIG. 10. is a cross-sectional view showing another altemative embodiment of the car seat base.
[018] Referring to FIGS. 1 to 10, a car seat base with indicator device according to the present invention includes a car seat base 1, a support leg 2 and an indicator device 4.
[019] The car seat base 1 of this embodiment includes an upper face 13, a rear end 11 and a front end 15. The upper face 13 is contoured for detachably supporting and anchoring a car seat 20. The rear end 11 is used for connection to a vehicle seat, and the front end 15 is connected to a support leg 2. For instance, the car seat base 1 may include an ISO-FIX connector 12 mounted at the rear end 11 for connection to the vehicle seat.
[020] Preferably, the upper face 13 may be formed with a plurality of connecting slots 14 for anchoring the car seat 20 thereon. For instance, the car seat 20 may include a downward extending hook-like element (not shown) for insertion into a said connecting slot 14 for anchoring on a shaft or pin (not shown) therein. Alternatively, the car seat 20 may be provided with a shaft or pin (not shown) for insertion into a said connecting slot 14 where the shaft or pin is locked by a hook-like element (not shown) mounted therein.
[021] The support leg 2 has an upper end 25 and a lower distal end 24 for engaging a vehicle floor 10. The support leg 2 has a stowed position 21 when it is stowed under the car seat base 1 and a deployed position 23 in which it is locked and is arranged to support the car seat base I at the front end 15. The car seat base 1 may be arranged to hide the support leg 2 when it is in its stowed position. Preferably, the support leg 2 can be a telescopic tube which includes a locking mechanism 3 for adjusting and locking the telescopic tube at a selected length.
[022] The car seat base 1 may further have a connector 16 formed with a pair of guiding slots 19 for pivoting and guiding the upper end 25 of the support leg 2. The support leg 2 is thus pivoted from its stowed position 21 to an intermediate or non-locked position 22 where the support leg 2 is substantially perpendicular to the car seat base 1 or is in a substantially vertical position (as shown in the figures). The indicator device 4 and the upper end 25 of the support leg 2 have a common pivot connection to the guiding slots 19 and the upper end 25 is then guided by the slots 19 so as to be moved upwardly (together with the indicator device 4) so that the support leg 2 is locked in its deployed position 23. The car seat base 1 can then be connected to the vehicle seat via the rear end 11.
[023] The indicator device 4 may be installed at the front end 15 of the car seat base 1.
When the support leg 2 has been positioned in the deployed or locked position 23, the indicator device 4 connected to the upper end 25 of the support leg 2 displays a signal to a user for assuring that the support leg 2 is correctly positioned in its deployed position 23.
[024] Referring to FIG. 9, an alternative embodiment of the indicator device 4 may comprise a sensor 5 mounted inside the front end 15 of the car seat base 1 for actuating an electronic alarm device (not shown) when the upper end 25 of the support leg 2 has been moved into the deployed position 23 so as to make contact with the sensor 5.
[025] Referring to FIG. 10, the support leg 2 is capable of rotation to the intermediate or non-locked position 22 for sliding along the guiding slots 19. The indicator device 4 may comprise a first sensor 51 and a second sensor 52. The first sensor 51 is mounted inside the front end 15 of the car seat base 1 for actuating an electronic alarm device (not shown) when the upper end 25 of the support leg 2 is in the intermediate or non-locked position 22, and the second sensor 52 is used to power off the electronic alarm device when the upper end 25 of the support leg 2 has been positioned in the deployed position 23 and is in contact with the second sensor 52.
[026] Preferably, the front end 15 of the car seat base 1 may be formed with a window 17 (see FIGS. 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8) for showing the signal of the indicator device 4. The indicator device 4 may be embodied as a color element 41 movably installed within the front end 15 of the car seat base 1, comprising at least a first color area 43 which is capable of being displayed in or exposed from the window 17 when the support leg 2 has been positioned in the deployed position 23.
[027] Referring back to FIG. 2, the color element 41 comprises a first color area 43 and a second color area 42 both arc capable of being displayed in the window 17 in turn. When the support leg 2 has been positioned in the deployed position 23, the first color area 43 is shown from the window 17, and when the support leg 2 has left the deployed position 23, the second color area 42 is shown from the window 17.
[028] The color element 41 may be slidably mounted inside the front end 15 of the car seat base 1 and be biased by a spring (not shown) for normally showing a second color area 42 in the window 17 when the support leg 2 is not in or has left the deployed position 23.
[029] Referring to FIGS. 7 to 10, an engaging portion 18 may be formed within the front end 15 of the car seat base 1 for holding the upper end 25 of the support leg 2 so as to prevent the support leg 2 from folding to the stowed position 21.
[030] While particular embodiments of the invention have been described, those skilled in the art will recognize that many modifications are possible that will achieve the same goals by substantially the same device, and where those devices still fall within the scope of the appended claims.
