Abstract
A sweet tree 1 includes an elongate member 3 and means 5 for securing the elongate member 3 in an upright position with one end held by the securing means 5 and an enlargement at the other end of the elongate member 3. The enlargement comprises a substrate 13 provided with an outer surface having an edible coating and confectionary items, candies or sweets 15 attached to the coating. The edible coating may be chocolate and the confectionery items 15 applied to this chocolate layer when the latter is soft. The substrate 13 may be made of an edible material or food-safe polystyrene, and may be spherical. The securing means 5 may comprise a container having chocolate located inside with the elongate member 3 being held by the chocolate. The elongate member 3 may be confectionery rock or food-safe wood coated in chocolate.
Description
Confectionery Display
Field of the invention
This invention relates to displays of confectionery and in particular to confectionery displays known as sweet trees.
Background to the invention
Sweet trees are known which comprise a pot or other container in which is mounted a "tree" including a rod like member forming the tree trunk and an enlarged spherical or other like element at the upper end of the tree trunk which forms the tree crown (branches and foliage). In the known sweet tree, the crown is provided by a spherical or other shaped substrate or former which may be made from, for instance, a foamed plastics material. The items of confectionery are attached to this underlying structure by means of pins or short "cocktail sticks" or the like. The manner of attachment of the items of confectionery to the underlying structure is potentially hazardous in that it is always possible, for instance, for children to detach the pin or stick along with the confectionery item and accidentally swallow both.
Statements of the invention
According to the present invention there is provided a sweet tree comprising an elongate member, means for securing the elongate member in an upright position with one end held by the securing means and an enlargement at the other end of the elongate member, wherein the enlargement comprises a substrate which is edible or is provided with an outer surface having an edible coating provided thereon, and a plurality of confectionery items attached to said coating.
The items of confectionery may be made, for instance, of chocolate or an edible glue, or a combination thereof.
Where the substrate is not itself edible, it may be made of, for instance, a food-safe polystyrene.
Preferably, the edible coating is chocolate and the confectionery items are applied to this chocolate layer when the latter is soft. On hardening, the confectionery item becomes firmly attached to the tree crown although it can be readily detached by applying a sufficient pulling force to it.
Preferably, the substrate is spherical in shape.
Preferably, the securing means comprises a container having chocolate located therein, said elongate member being held by said chocolate.
Preferably, the elongate member is an item of confectionery such as rock coated in chocolate. Rock is a type of hard, stick-shaped boiled sugar confectionery which may be flavoured with, for example, peppermint or spearmint.
The elongate member may be a combination of edible and non-edible materials, such as food-safe wood coated in chocolate.
The elongate member may be made entirely of a non-edible material, especially in larger trees.
Brief description of the drawing
The accompanying drawing illustrates a sweet tree in accordance with the present invention.
Detailed description of the invention
The present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing.
A sweet tree 1 in accordance with the present invention comprises an elongate member in the form of rock coated in chocolate. In larger trees, rod 3 may be made of an inedible material, such as plastics or wood.
At its lower end (as seen in the drawing), rod 3 is mounted within a container 5 and is secured therein by means of a chocolate layer 7 which occupies at least the lower
I
portion of the container. Rod 3 is secured into chocolate 7 while the latter is soft. On hardening, the rod becomes firmly secured in position.
Container 5 may be provided with a layer of chocolates or other confectionery 9 which may extend to the top of the container at position 11.
At its other end rod 3 is provided with a spherical element 13 in the form of either a food-safe polystyrene globe or an edible globe. Globe 13 is entirely covered with a layer of chocolate which is applied to the globe while molten. Whilst still soft, chocolate confectionery items 15 are pressed into the chocolate and are held in place by the cooling chocolate. Once fully cooled the confectionery items 15 are located firmly on the globe although they may be pulled off by applying a reasonable pulling force to them. In some instances, edible glue may be used to secure the confectionery items.
It would be appreciated that the above-described sweet tree may provide not only a decorative item for adorning tables, for instance, wedding functions or on other occasions. In addition, the confectionery items may be consumed by pulling them from the tree crown or by extracting them from the container.
Claims (11)
- Claims 1. A sweet tree comprising an elongate member, mean for securing the elongate member in an upright position with one end held by the securing means and an enlargement at the other end of the elongate member, wherein the enlargement comprises a substrate providing an outer surface having an edible coating provided thereon, and a plurality of confectionery items attached to said coating.
- 2. A sweet tree according to Claim 1, wherein the edible coating is chocolate and the confectionery items are applied to this chocolate layer when the latter is soft.
