Etching.-In the manufacture of saw blades of the kind described in Specification 245,301, [Class 145 (ii), Wood, Working], from steel wire, the portions of the wire which are to form the tooth or teeth of the blade are covered with acidproof material and the wire is then placed in acid for a time sufficient to eat away the unprotected portions of the wire to the desired depth. The wire is then removed from the acid, the covering removed and the wire washed. In one form a band of elastic material, such as indiarubber, is wound round the wire in a stretched or distended condition, the band, when the wire is acted upon by the acid, gripping the tooth edges so formed and causing the acid to take a deeper course thereby producing an undercut tooth or teeth with rounded corners at the bottom of the groove or grooves. In another form, two or more elastic bands are wound spirally round the wire in the same or opposite directions so as to produce spiral or square or diamondshaped teeth. To produce a series of separate circumferential teeth, a series of alternating discs of acid-proof and non-acid-proof material are threaded on the wire before immersion in the acid.
