Abstract

Detachable roof bars 2 are attached along the length of fixed roof bars 1 by a bracket 3 and nuts 4. When the use of the detachable roof bars is required, it requires the simple step of unscrewing four nuts positioned near each end of the detachable roof bars, positioning the detachable roof bars across the width of the roof of the vehicle on top of the fixed roof bars and screwing down the nuts in their original location. The fixed roof bars may have the brackets integrated in their design. A further variation is to design fixed roof bars with protruding threaded bolts at the top of the fixed roof bars so that detachable roof bars can be added and secured with a rubber washer and nuts. The invention allows roof rack bars, which are transversely located across the vehicle when in use, to be stored lengthways along the top of fixed roof bars.

Description

I Title
Roof bars
Background
This invention relates to a motor vehicles fixed roof bars. Every vehicle that has fixed roof bars attached to the roof require additional roof bars when transporting items that do not fit inside the vehicle.
Statement of invention
Motor vehicles that have roof bars' fixed along the length of their roof require additional roof bars which are attached across the width of the roof of the vehicle in order to carry items over the roof of this vehicle excessive in size, shape or deemed obtrusive that cannot be carried within the vehicle. However, if these additional roof bars are not attached or are left in the garage (where such items are commonly stored) then the aforementioned load cannot be carried.
To overcome this problem, this innovative invention proposes detachable roof bars that are attached by a bracket on top of the permanent bars on the roof of the vehicle and kept in situ. A variation of this is to design the fixed roof bars with the bracket incorporated in its manufactured design or fixed roof bars with a threaded bolt protruding near each 4 ends of the fixed roof bars through the top, which will allow for the detachable roof bars to be placed on top with 4 rubber washers to absorb vibration and 4 nuts to secure in place.
Advantagei For example one could be on a journey and see an item they wish to purchase but cannot because they don't have their roof bars to transport the item which will not fit in the vehicle.
Having detachable roof bars attached on top of permanently fixed bars' to the roof of a motor vehicle will give uncompromised (within manufacture limits of safety) access to carry items on the roof of the vehicle anywhere at any time. And because the detachable bars are replaced back along the length of the vehicle this will not affect the motor vehicles manufactures design efforts to keep aerodynamics at an optimum and therefore not interfering with fuel consumption.
On the other hand some people may keep their roof bars attached across the width of the roof of the vehicle permanently due to inconvenience or reluctance to remove these after use due to a former experience as demonstrated above or even laziness, however, keeping roof bars fixed across the width of the vehicle will affect the aerodynamics, fuel consumption and aesthetics of the vehicle.
Preferably the detachable roof bars bracket has a rubber upper surface to absorb any vibration from the detachable roof bars when the vehicle is in motion.
Preferably the detachable roof bar nut will have a rubber washer to secure and absorb further vibration and ensuring a good seal.
Preferably fixed roof bars can have the bracket incorporated within their design as a variant on having an after market bracket and detachable roof bars attached.
Preferably fixed roof bars with integrated bracket can later add the detachable roof bars.
Example
An example of my invention will now be described by four drawings.
Figurel Shows a vehicle that has the manufactured fixed roof bars attac'ned along the roof of this vehicle (1). It shows one of the invention's bars in situ across the vehicle (2) also once secured with the other bar in place, it would be prepared and ready to take a load across the roof of the vehicle which would then be fixed and secured by additional means (a rope etc) to prevent movement or dislodging of this item during transportation.
Figure2 Shows the fixing bracket (3) that attaches over the permanently fixed roof bars. This is fixed in place by means of two bolts (7) secured at the opposite side with nuts. The surface at the top of the bracket has a raised rubber surface (9) to absorb any vibration.
Once the detachable roof bar is placed on top of this, aligning its hole over the bolt (4) the washer (5) and nut (6) is screwed on tightly. The roof bar across the width of the vehicle is now ready to accept its load.
Figure3 Shows the detachable roof bar (2) elevated above the permanent fixed roof bars (1) which would be lowered in to place aligning the holes (8) over the fixed bolt (4) on the bracket (3) and secured with the nut, until required to be used again. A variation of this would be having the bracket (3) integral in the design of roof bars (1) that are permanently fixed to vehicles.
Figure4 Shows what the permanent fixed roof bars (1) would appear like with the brackets (3) in place if the detachable roof bars were removed.
Detailed description
When one intends to utilise the design of the detachable roof bars the process to be undertaken is by first detaching roof bars (2) which are attached to the fixed roof bars (1) by the bracket (3). These are manually removed from their retained position on the fixed bars by unscrewing the nut (6) and placing the detachable roof bars (2) across the width of the vehicle and reattaching to bracket (3) that is attached to the fixed roof bars (1) with bolts (7) The bracket (3) remains attached to the fixed roof bars (1) permanently, if desired, by bolts (7) with the convenience of having the detachable roof bars (2) available should they be required at any time or place. Claim

Claims (5)

1. Motor vehicles that have roof bars' fixed along the length of their roof require additional roof bars which are attached across the width of the roof of the vehicle in order to carry items over the roof of this vehicle excessive in size, shape or deemed obtrusive that cannot be carried within the vehicle, however, if these additional roof bars are not attached or are left in the garage (where such items are commonly stored) then the aforementioned load cannot be carried.
2. Fixed roof bars with detachable roof bars according to claim I will overcome this problem.
3. The bracket according to claim 2 attaches to the fixed roof bars which then allows for the detachable roof bars to be fixed on top of the fixed roof bars.
4. Fixed roof bars that have the brackets for the detachable roof bars integrated within the manufactured design according to claim 3 can subsequently allow for detached roof bars to be purchased at a later date if so desired.
5. Fixed roof bars with protruding threaded bolts claim 4 near each corner of the fixed roof bars can subsequently allow for detached roof bars to be attached or purchased at a later date if so desired. These would be secured in their location over the fixed roof bars by means ofa rubber washer and nut.
