Abstract
248,838. Western Electric Co., Ltd., (Western Electric Co., Inc.). Dec. 11, 1924. Thermionic generators; modulating systems and harmonics, absorbing.-In a high frequency transmission system, more particularly for use as a radio transmitting circuit, a tuned circuit TC is interposed between the power amplifier circuit PA and the antenna or load circuit A in order to suppress the transfer of harmonics to the antenna or load circuit. The circuit TC and antenna circuit A are both tuned to the fundamental frequency. The circuit TC is made up of two parallel branches, one of which includes a variable condenser 4 in series with an adjustable inductance 3 and the other of which includes a capacity 5 having a lower impedance than the first mentioned branch to the higher frequencies. The condenser 4 is also included in the antenna circuit, which comprises, in addition, the tuning coil 6 and aerial 7, so that the condenser 4 serves as a common coupling element for transferring energy from the power amplifier output circuit to the antenna. In order to secure ordinarily loose coupling, the capacity of the coupling condenser 4 is made large relatively to the other capacity 5. The modulating system, comprising the transmitter 1, voice frequency amplifier VA, and amplifier OA, is similar to that described in Specifications 133,366 and 152,811, whilst the source 2 and its circuit for supplying high frequency carrier waves to the amplifier OA is preferably of the kind disclosed in Specification 141,046. Space current is supplied from the source 8 to the amplifiers VA, OA in common through the choke coil. The amplified speech waves from the amplifier VA act to modulate the waves supplied from the source 2 in the amplifier circuit OA and the resulting modulated waves are impressed on the grids of the power amplifier system P.A., which is of the type in which the tubes are worked beyond the straight portion of their characteristics during at least one half cycle of the waves impressed in the inputs thereof.
