Abstract

A hovercraft flexible skirt segment is formed from two side panels 1 and a front panel 2. The front panel may be bent over to accommodate a change in ground profile. A plurality of roller ball devices 5 are affixed to the front panel of the skirt segment. Each roller device 5 comprises a roller ball 6 housed between a top plate 7 and a backing plate 9 packed with a layer of ball bearings 10. The roller devices are attached to the skirt by means of a fixing mechanism acting through fixing holes 8. The roller devices are intended to improve wear resistance of the skirt whilst maintaining its flexibility.

Description

Low Friction Hovercraft skirt segment device This invention relates to a reducAng friction and wear on a Hovercraft skirt segment, that is a standard finger segment as used on Hovercraft and Hoverbarges to contain the air or gas cushion and particularly suited to operations that include transport over broken ice, tree stumps, concrete roads and rocks that would normally tear the rubber skirt material.
BACKGROUND TO THE 1NVENTION
Hovercraft and Hoverbarges are used for putting men and equipment ashore and used by both the Military and civil engineers. Mostly they operate in environmentally friendly areas but more work is now taking place in areas that will cause greater wear on the skirt segments that contain the air or gas cushion. Sharp ice, over concrete roads, rocks and sawn off trees can tear the rubber material the skirt segments are made from.
This invention uses additional devices added to the outer layers of the skirt fabric to increase the skirt life whilst allowing it to remain flexible. The flexible seal could be constructed by a skirt bounded around the periphery of the hull base to contain the cushion and formed with a plurality of segments used in hovercraft skirt systems.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION
The object of the present invention is to provide an increased wear resistant by adding low friction typical manufactured roller balls to the front of the skirt segment panel to increase the life of the Hovercraft and Hoverbarge skirt systems.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The invention will be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:-Fig I presents an isometric view of a standard Hovercraft or Hoverbarge skirt segment with side walls (1) wrapped back to form a triangle with the front panel (2) and top edge (3) and back edge (4). Roller ball device (5) is fitted to the front panel (2).
The skirt segment panel (2) also remains flexible as the roller ball devices (5) are not connected to one another.
Fig 2 presents a view of a standard Hovercraft or 1-loverbarge skirt segment with side walls (1) wrapped back to form a triangle with the front panel (2) and top edge (3) and back edge (4).
Roller ball device (5) is fitted to the front panel (2) and front panel (2) bent over to accommodate a change in the ground profile.
Fig 3 presents a view of the outside of the roller device (5) and these roller devices which may be available from manufacturing suppliers are fitted to the front panel (2) with rivets of some other fixing mechanism via the holes (8) with the roller ball (6) retained in place by a top plate (7) designed to stop the roller ball falling out.
Fig 4 presents a view of a section through a typical manufactured roller ball device (5) with the roller ball (6) held in location by a specially shaped top plate (7) that has a hole of slightly less diameter than the roller ball (6) and retained by backing plate (9) that is shaped similar to the roller ball with a layer of ball bearings (10) between the backing plate (9) and the roller ball (6) so the roller ball can move in any direction. The roller device (5) is fitted to the front skirt panel with a locking device such as a rivet via the location holes (8) that pass through the top plate (7) and backing plate (9)

Claims (1)

  1. CLAIM1. An improved standard Hovercraft or Hoverbarge skirt segment that has additional roller devices fitted to the front outside face of the skirt segment so that it has flexibility, reduces friction and improved wear resistance.
