Abstract
248,719. Sachs Ges., R. March 6, 1925, [Convention date]. Hollow-ware.-An apparatus for forming sheet zinc casings for the cells of electric pocket batteries of the type consisting of a mandrel mounted in the bore of a block into the space between which a metal blank is pushed so as to bend the blank into tubular form, has mounted over a guideway communicating with the space, a cover, which is lowered prior to pushing the blank forward, so as to prevent the formation of creases. A metal strip 6 is fed along a guide 5 to an end stop 25, whereupon a shear blade 11 carried by a cover 12 is pushed down against the action of springs 13 by the cam surface 17 of a bar 16 operated by an eccentric, so as to sever a blank which drops on to a guide 10. A series of pushers 9 which are guided by a cross-head slidably mounted in a slot 18 in the bar 16, are then moved forward by the bar 16 so as to push the blank into the channel 4 between the cylindrical bore of a block 3 and a mandrel 1 and thus bend it into tubular form with its ends overlapping. The pushers move in slots in the block and in grooves in the cover. The cover prevents creasing of the blank during bending. The mandrel has a rotatable sleeve 2 from which the blanks are stripped on to an enlarged part 24 by a sleeve 21 pushed forward by a cam-operated lever 23. The joint may be soldered on the part 24 or may be stripped therefrom. The blank may be rotated so as to bring the seam underneath prior to soldering or may be bent with its seam underneath by constructing the machine so that the blank is pushed along a guide adjacent the under side of the mandrel.
