Abstract

A hammock that is supported by a tent-like arched structure and its connecting fabric. The structure itself consists of two intersecting poles that are bent under tension to form arches and a fabric canopy enclosure suspended underneath. These arches serve to support the weight of the user inside this fabric enclosure whilst keeping its shape stretched and expanded. The poles may have peg ends for anchoring in the ground or may have wide mud feet. A fly sheet, internal pocket and additional or insulation may be provided at the bottom. The poles may comprise a plurality of segments and the structure may have cords for reinforcement.

Description

Self-supported tent-hammock This invention relates to self-supporting suspended shelters that usually comprise of a hammock having a supporting frame and canopy. More specifically this invention relates to a hammock that is supported solely by a tent-like arched structure and its connecting fabric.
Numerous tent-hammock configurations have been on the market now but most of them are dependent on the presence of trees at the chosen camping site. This constraint have led to the invention of many self-supporting tent-hammocks. However some of these do not offer rigid sheltered living space whilst others have a cumbersome construction that is not portable during long treks. The object of this invention is to present a lightweight portable camping structure that is still capable to support the weight of an occupant above the ground. This is achieved by using the following mechanical principles: the inherent strength of the arch shape to support vertical loads; the egual distribution of the occupant's weight along the whole length of the carrying arched poles; and -the pre-tensioning of the poles when erecting them which further amplifies their load carrying capacity.
An embodiment of this invention as illustrated here in figure 1 consists of two intersecting tent poles (1) and (2) that are bent under tension when erecting the structure as to form an arched "dome". Inside this space is a fabric (3) that forms an enclosed living area which is connected to the poles in such manner that it keeps them from extending outwards and also keeps them from falling flat to the floor as their ends are connected by four sleeves (4) to the fabric enclosure and with cords (8) to each other. The poles run inside sleeves (5) that are sewn into the roof of the fabric along it's whole length and intersect once at each end of the hammock area as their planes are set at an angle to each other. This arrangement keeps the whole structure from collapsing sideways whilst the bent poles keep the fabric of the hammock stretched flat and support it at both its ends and along its whole length so a person can lie or sit suspended in the enclosure. As the poles apply outward force to the living enclosure they keep it expanded even if its unoccupied. The occupant can enter the enclosure via a rounded entrance (6) to the side-wall of the fabric. This entrance could be fitted with a zipped flap door (7) or left open if the weather permits.
Figure 2 shows a front view of the invention.
Figure 3 shows a side view of the invention.
The pole's ends can be capped with a variety of end fittings (9) including wide "mud feet" that as well as end caps serve to stop the structure from sinking into soft ground.
This particular design as illustrated here features a fabric enclosure that has a shape similar to a down-facing wedge from an orange fruit with it's bottom edge mostly flattened out. Four triangular sleeves project from its bottom sides (two on each end) to connect to the poles' ends.

Claims (8)

  1. Claims 1. A self-supported tent-hammock that allows the user to reside suspended above the ground and inside a fabric enclosure by means of it's poles that are bent under tension and it's stretched connecting fabric.
  2. 2. A self-supported tent-hammock according to claim 1, in which the fabric or the structure itself is reinforced with various cords preserve it's integrity.
  3. 3. A self-supported tent-hammock according to claim 1, in which the tent poles are assembled or disassembled in segments.
  4. 4. A self-supported tent-hammock according to claim 1, in which there is an additional fly sheet over the top for extra protection from the elements.
  5. 5. A self-supported tent-hammock according to claim 1, in which there are one or more pockets built into the fabric for storage of the person's belongings.
  6. 6. A self-supported tent-hammock according to claim 1, in which there is additional bedding or insulating material to the bottom of the fabric enclosure.
  7. 7. A self-supported tent-hammock according to claim 1, in which there are pegs attached to the pole ends for securing the invention in position.
  8. 8. A self-supported tent-hammock according to claim 1, in which various end fittings are fitted to it's pole's ends like wide "mud" feet or others.Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows Claims 1. A free standing hammock tent that allows the user to reside suspended above the ground and inside a fabric enclosure by means of it's bent poles and it's connecting fabric. The poles intersect twice near the poles' ends for increased stability and "mud feet" type foot plates are fitted to it's pole's ends to prevent sinking into soft ground. c\J r C1)N
