Description

SEAL FOR WASTE DISPOSAL CONTAINER
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a seal for a waste disposal container.
More particularly, the present invention relates to a seal for a waste disposal container capable of being used to dispose of confidential information.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
With the increasing use of computer technology and printers, large volumes of printed matter are now being generated which contain confidential information. The confidential information may relate to information about companies, government institutions or departments, financial transactions such as from the banking industry and legal documents.
To address this need it is now common for offices and work environments to have a special designated waste disposal container where all confidential information may be deposited through a slot in a letter-box type of arrangement.
However, a problem exists in that the confidential information can be removed through the slot and, in effect, stolen by a third party who may then misuse the confidential information such as for potentially illegal purposes. For example, this is now a standard way in which to illegally obtain passwords and credit card details.
A further problem exists in that when the waste disposal containers are empty or have been emptied and the waste disposal containers are sent to a new location there requires a re-checking exercise to confirm that the waste disposal container is still empty. This re-checking exercise is required to ensure that the waste disposal container has not been tampered with and that material has not been placed in the waste disposal container by a third party. This re-checking exercise is also required to ensure that confidential is never mistakenly sent to another company.
It is an object of at least one aspect of the present invention to obviate or mitigate at least one or more of the aforementioned problems.
It is a further object of at least one aspect of the present invention to provide a seal for a waste disposal container wherein the seal is capable of preventing third parties from gaining unauthorised access to confidential information contained therein.
It is a further object of at least one aspect of the present invention to provide a seal for a waste disposal container wherein the seal is capable of preventing third parties from gaining unauthorised access to an empty waste disposal container.
It is a further object of at least one aspect of the present invention to provide an improved method of sealing a waste disposal container wherein the seal is capable of preventing third parties from gaining unauthorised access to confidential information contained therein.
It is a further object of at least one aspect of the present invention to provide an improved method of sealing a waste disposal container wherein the seal is capable of preventing third parties from gaining unauthorised access to an empty waste disposal container.
It is a further object of at least one aspect of the present invention to provide a seal comprising a visual indication that the containers contents have been checked.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a seal for a waste disposal container capable of being used to dispose of confidential information, the seal comprising: a portion capable of attaching to at least part of a waste disposal container; and a frangible and/or breakable portion; wherein the frangible and/or breakable portion of the seal is capable of breaking and/or tearing in the event that unauthorised access of the waste disposal container is attempted.
The present invention therefore relates to a seal for a waste disposal container capable of being used to dispose of confidential information and preventing third parties from gaining access to empty waste disposal containers or waste disposal containers filled with confidential information. The seal may therefore be seen as functioning as a security seal.
The seal of the present invention may be used to seal either empty waste disposal containers or waste disposal containers filled with confidential information. The seal may therefore be used to prevent having to continually re-check that waste disposal containers are devoid of confidential printed matter before being dispatched to a client at a different location. Alternatively, the seal may be used to prevent unauthorised access to printed matter that has been placed in the waste disposal container.
It is also preferred that at least a portion of the seal is visible during use which provides a visual indication if the seal has been tampered with and/or if unauthorised entry has been attempted. The visual indication is therefore capable of providing a checking procedure.
The seal may be made from any suitable type of material and may securely act as seal against illegal and/or unauthorised entry to the waste disposal container. For example, the material may be made from frangible, tearable and/or breakable material such as paper, card or a composite material such as any form of plastics material. Therefore, as a third party attempts to gain access to an empty waste disposal container or confidential information in the waste disposal container the seal is capable of breaking and/or tearing thereby indicating that unauthorised has occurred. The seal may therefore also act as a deterrent to third parties considering illegally obtaining information from the waste disposal container.
In particular embodiments, the seal may be folded from a flat piece of material which may comprise a series of creases and/or folds to assist in the folding and/or construction of the seal. By having the seal formed from a flat piece of material also allows easy and relatively inexpensive transportation of the flat-pack pieces of material.
The seal may also comprise surface containing printed information such as, for example, CHECKED AND SEALED' which may extend outwards when the seal is constructed and in use. This can act as an additional deterrent to third parties with illegal intentions.
In the constructed form, the seal may comprise a central body section which is capable of being pushed through a slot in a waste disposal container.
The slot may be similar to the opening found in a letter-box through which letters may be inserted. In the case of the present invention, the slot may be used to insert confidential information through and into the waste disposal container. The slot in the waste disposal container may be any suitable length and/or width and is preferably thin enough to prevent a hand and arm from gaining access to an empty waste disposal container or the contents of a filled, or partially filled waste disposal container.
In the constructed form, the seal may also comprise parts on either side of the central body section which are capable of abutting and/or engaging against part of the waste disposal container (e.g. the lid) and preventing the removal of the unbroken seal from the slot through which it is inserted. The parts on either side of the central body section may therefore be longer and/or wider than the slot in the lid of the waste disposal container. In the event that a third party attempts to gain access to the waste disposal container by opening the lid of the container then the seal will break indicating that unauthorised access has occurred.
In alternative embodiments part of the seal may be attached (e.g. mechanically fixed or adhered) to at least part of the waste disposal container such as the lid with the result that as the lid is opened then the seal is capable of breaking and/or tearing. In particular embodiments, the seal may comprise a member in the form of a tongue may be attached to the lid. In the event that the lid is opened then the seal will break and/or tear. Alternatively, the member in the form of the tongue may be capable of being inserted through the slot in the waste disposal container and then breaking and/or tearing in the event that a third party attempts to gain access to the waste disposal container.
The waste disposal container may be any suitable type of receptacle capable of functioning as a storage space for confidential information in the form of printed matter. For example, the waste disposal container may be in the form ofawheeliebin.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of preventing unauthorised access to a waste disposal container capable of being used to dispose of confidential information, the method comprising: providing a seal containing a portion capable of attaching to at least part of a waste disposal container; the seal also comprising a frangible and/or breakable portion; wherein the frangible and/or breakable portion of the seal is capable of breaking and/or tearing in the event that unauthorised access of the waste disposal container is attempted.
The seal may be as defined in the first aspect.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION
Generally speaking, the present invention resides in the provision of a seal for a waste disposal container capable of being used to dispose of confidential information. The seal of the present invention may be used to seal either empty waste disposal containers or waste disposal containers filled with confidential information. A portion of the seal may also be visible during use which provides a visual indication if the seal has been tampered with and/or if unauthorised entry has been attempted.
Figure 1 is a representation of a seal according to the present invention generally designated 100. The seal 100 shown in Figure 1 is in an assembled form with the flat-pack form shown in Figure 2. In Figure 2 there is shown a main central area 110 which has a printed region stating CHECKED AND SEALED' which faces outwards when in use. On opposite sides of the main central region there are crease/fold lines 112, 114, 116, 118 which assist in the folding and construction of the seal 100. The crease/fold lines 112, 114, 116, 118 are on the opposite side to the printed region. There are then two further regions 128, 130 which extend along the main central region 110. These two further regions 128, comprise openings 120, 122, 124, 126 through which tabs 156, 158, 160, 162 may be inserted during folding and construction. Extending along the regions 128, 130 there are crease/fold lines 129, 131, respectively, and then further regions 140, 142. The crease/fold lines 129, 131 are on the same side of as the printed region. Located along the regions 140, 142 there are further crease/fold lines 144, 146, 148, 150 and then further regions 152, 154. The crease/fold lines 144, 146, 148, 150 are on the same side of as the printed region. The regions 152, 154 have corner parts 164, 166, 168, 170 which can be folded outwards using crease/fold lines 172, 174, 176, 178.
As indicated above Figure 1 represents the seal 100 in a folded form and in a configuration ready to be used.
Figure 3 represents the seal 100 in use. The seal 100 is inserted into a slot 184 in a lid 182 of a bin 180 (e.g. a wheelie bin) which can be used to contain confidential written matter. Figure 4 is an underside view of the lid 182 and shows the seal 100 extending through the slot 184 in the lid 182. Figure 4 shows that the folded regions 164, 166, 168, 170 of the seal 100 extend substantially orthogonal to the main spine of the seal 100 formed by regions 152, 154. On the other side of the lid 182 the region 110 abuts against the slot 184 in the lid 182.
The seal 100 is therefore fixed against the slot 182 in the lid 182 meaning that any confidential information in the bin 180 is secured and in the event that if a third party attempts to access the confidential information they will break the seal and it will therefore be known that confidential information may have been accessed and/or stolen.
The seal 100 is made from any suitable frangible, tearable and/or breakable material such as paper, card or a composite material such as any form of plastics material. Therefore as a third party attempts to access an empty bin or a bin 180 filled with confidential information the seal 100 will break and/or tear indicating that unauthorised access has occurred.
When waste disposal containers such as bins 180 are delivered to a customer the following process (or something similar to) may be followed: In the case of the small wheelie bin, the current process is as follows: 1. Container delivered to client/customer/user 2. Delivery driver checks waste disposal container is empty, then re-locks the waste disposal container using the seal 100 3. Customer fills container, then phones for replacement 4. Driver uplifts container 5. Container taken to document disposal department 6. Container stored until it can be emptied.
7. Container emptied 8. Container checked to be emptied 9. Container locked and stored until it goes to another customer (storage is often at a different department and/or location than the document disposal department) 10. When container is due to be sent out, waste disposal container is checked again to confirm that it is empty.
Then the cycle continues: 1. Container delivered to client/customer/user 2. Delivery driver checks container is empty, then re-locks the waste disposal container; etc The above situation is for a wheelie bin 180 such as shown in Figures 3 and 4. (In embodiments where the waste disposal container does not have a slot then the above cycle is exactly the same except the bin is left open while with the customer.) The seals described in the present invention may be used to remove steps from this process. Once the waste disposal container (e.g. the bin 180) has been emptied and checked, a seal of the present invention is fitted creating a visual reference that the waste disposal container is empty. This means, even if moved from one location to another, the waste disposal container should not need re-checked unless the seal has been tampered with. An added benefit is that the customer receives the waste disposal container with the seal intact; reassuring them they have an empty container. This also reassures them that their confidential documents are never mistakenly delivered to another company.
For the confidential information to be safely disposed of, waste disposal containers are regularly removed from the environment in which they are filled.
This presents a further problem, as the containers can then be supplied to other sites. Therefore it is imperative that containers are completely devoid of confidential printed matter when re-dispatched, and never delivered to another environment in error. The seal of the present invention therefore addresses this problem.
Figures 5 and 6 represent a further seal according to the present invention generally designated 200. Figure 5 shows the seal 200 in a folded form ready to be used and Figure 6 represents the seal 200 in flat-pack form. Referring to Figure 6 this shows that the seal 200 comprises a lower portion 221 and an upper portion 222 which form a perimeter around inner member 210 in the form of a tongue. Around the inner member 210 there are cut edges 212, 214, 216 and region 218 that is cut-away. There is also a crease/fold line 220 which can form a hinge for the inner member 210. The crease/fold line 220 is on the same side as a printed message showing CHECKED AND SEALED'. There are also crease/fold lines 222, 224, 226, 228 on the same side of the printed message and crease/fold lines 230, 232 on the opposite side of the printed message.
Figure 5 shows that the in use the inner member 210 is folded up and around the crease/fold line 220.
Figure 7 is a view of the seal 200 in use attached to a bin 280. In the event that a third party attempted to access the contents of the bin 280, the seal would be broken and/or torn thereby indicating that an empty bin 280 has been accesses or that confidential information may have illegally been taken from a filled bin 280.
Figure 8 is a view of a further seal 300 according to the present invention.
The seal 300 comprises a tongue 310 which is capable of being inserted through a slot 382 in a lid 382 of a bin 380. The seal 300 also comprises regions 312, 314 which extend underneath the lid 382. The seal 300 will break/tear in the event that a third party attempts to access an empty bin 380 or the contents of the bin 380 when filled.
Figure 9 is a view of a yet further seal 400 according to the present invention. The seal 400 comprises a tongue portion 410 that is attached (e.g. by any mechanical or chemical means such as using adhesive) to a front part of a lid 482 of a bin 480. Confidential information may be inserted through the slot 484 in the lid 482. The seal 400 will break/tear in the event that a third party attempts to access an empty bin 480 or the contents of the bin 480 when filled.
Figure 10 is a view of a further seal 500 according to the present invention. The seal 500 comprises a tongue portion 510 and a lower section 512 that is attached to part of a waste disposal container 580. There is also a locking member 514. The seal 500 will break and/or tear in the event that a third party attempts to access an empty bin 580 or the contents of the bin 580 when filled.
Whilst specific embodiments of the present invention have been described above, it will be appreciated that departures from the described embodiments may still fall within the scope of the present invention. Moreover, any suitable type of frangible/breakable seal may be used to act as a deterrent or indicate that an empty bin has been accessed or the contents of a bin containing confidential information have been illegally accessed by a third party. In addition, any suitable type of frangible/breakable seal may be used to act as a visual indicator that the contents of a waste disposal container has been checked.
