Abstract
Disclosed is a tool for sharpening equine and bovine hoof knives which are used for trimming hooves. The sharpener comprises a tip 4 manufactured from a piece of round bar, preferably tungsten carbide, one end of which is ground to a tapered square section to define four cutting edges. The, what would otherwise be flat, surfaces of the tapered square are ground to be concave leaving the cutting edges with negative rake. The un-ground round end of the piece of bar may be inserted and bonded into a bore (4, figure 2) in one end of a round steel bar, the other end of which may be coated with diamond dust to define a file. The round steel bar may be inserted into the bore of a handle and held in place by a knurled securing nut 2 with either the four-sided cutter or the diamond coated file projecting from an end of the handle. The resulting tool can be used to sharpen a hoof knife with the four sided tip and the round steel bar can be turned around in the handle for use as a file to remove minor burrs left by sharpening. Different sized tips may be provided.
Description
Pescript$ From time to time equine and bovine hoof tissue can become damaged or infected. When this occurs the affected part of the hoof must be removed to avoid further damage or infection. The damaged areas are trimmed with a hoof knife, which has curved blades and either a hook or loop of sharpened steel. The loops and hooks vary in size from 4mm to 15mm internal diameter and only the internal edge is sharpened. To avoid damage to hooves when trimming the trimming tool has to be kept sharp at all times. Due to the design ofthe trimming tools it is difficult to sharpen with existing sharpeners as these cannot get into the loop to sharpen the inside edge1 Therefore I have designed a Hook Knife Sharpener for this purpose.
The cutting part of the hand held sharpener has been made from 5mm round bar Tungsten carbide steel 35mm long; this can be varied in size to allow for different size knife blades as required, This has been ground into a tapered square section at one end measuring 20mm long and 4mm at the thickest section and 2.5mm at the thinnest section. This tool has four cutting edges for longevity and the each flat surface has been hollow ground to gain a sharper cutting edge that lasts longer and for ease of use, The cutter is places inside the loop or hooks of the knife and is used to scrape of a layer of steel from the blade to create a sharp cutting edge; the sharpener can also be used on the long curved section of the blade used in the same way.
The Tungsten cutter has been muunted in the end of a steel round bar which half of its length has been coated in a diamond dust to create a file that can be used to remove any minor burrs left after sharpening. This round piece of steel bar slides into a handle and is secure by the means of a knurled locking nut allowing easy use of either end of the file or the tungsten sharpening tip by simply twisting the knurled nut and sliding the file out which ever tool is required. The cutting edges of the tool can be re-sharpened when they have become blunt. The cutting part of the tool is currently mounted on a steel handle this may change to a wooden or plastic handle in the future.

5: Diamond coated file that is on the opposite end of the tungsten tipped cutter inside the handle Prawine Twp is the internal part of the sharpener. This consists of a round piece of steel that has been coated in a diamond dust and is used for de burring the cutting edge of the hoof knife after the tungsten sharpener has been used. The opposite end has been bored out to accept the Tungsten carbide tip which has been bonded in using a lock tight type adhesive which hardens when there is no contact with oxygen. The whole item can be slid inside the body of the handle and secured with the knurled locking nut 1: four sided tungsten carbide tip.

Claims (1)
1: The cutting edge of the sharpener is made from high grade tungsten carbide steel round bar which has been ground into a tapered square section making a total of four cutting edges. Each flat surface of the cutter has been precision ground with a slight concave effect resulting in a negative rake on the cutting edge's resulting in a sharper cutting edge and a longer life.
2: The sharpening tool can be used with different size tips for the sharpening of different size trimming tools.
3: Made from tungsten carbide round bar, very hard steel for longevity.
4: Four cutting edges for longevity will last four times longer.
5: Easy to use 6: Left and right handed 7: Because of its small size it can be used on most small loop and hoof knifes
