Description

COLLECTING/SUPPORTING DEVICE The present invention relates to a collecting/supporting device, in particular for use with an upstanding member, such as a tree.
Various devices have been devised for collecting fruit from fruit trees, such as disclosed in GB-A-255012, G6-A-948579 and G6-A-2338636.
The present inventor has devised a collecting/supporting device, in particular a collecting/supporting device which allows both for the collection of fruit and other debris, such as clippings, from a tree and the supporting of objects, such as potted plants, at an elevated position around the trunk of a tree. In other embodiments the collecting/supporting device can have application in catching all manner of materials, such as debris as when cutting timber or making pottery, and transporting objects, such as laundry or animal feed.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a collecting/supporting device, comprising an erectable platform, which can be collapsed for storage, wherein the platform comprises a framework and a flexible sheet material which is supported between the framework, the framework and the flexible sheet material together providing a base and a peripheral rim which extends around the periphery of the base when the platform is erected.
In one embodiment the device is for use with an upstanding member, such as a tree, and, when erected, is located about the upstanding member and is a self-supporting structure which can be supported at a height above the ground.
In one embodiment the platform is collapsible radially, substantially in-plane.
In one embodiment the base is a substantially horizontal surface and the rim is an upstanding rim which extends around the periphery of the base.
In one embodiment the framework comprises a central collar, and rigid arms which extend outwardly from the collar, such that, with the platform erected, the arms extend radially at intervals and support the sheet material therebetween.
In one embodiment the collar comprises a flexible element, preferably formed of rubber.
In one embodiment the collar comprises a split ring.
In one embodiment two adjacent, endmost arms include fastening means, which, when fastened together, provide the sheet material as a continuous, supporting surface.
In one embodiment the platform comprises a closure element which is located within the collar and acts to close the opening between the collar and an upstanding member, such as the trunk of a tree, when erected thereon.
In one embodiment the closure element comprises a plurality of resilient flaps which are configured to close the opening within the collar in the absence of the upstanding member and be splayed upwards and outwards when fitted to the upstanding member.
In one embodiment the sheet material comprises a fabric, preferably formed of a plastics material.
In one embodiment the framework and the sheet material of the platform are provided as a single, integral structure, preferably heat welded.
In one embodiment the platform comprises a tray of circular shape.
In one embodiment the device is for collecting fruit or other debris, such as clippings.
In one embodiment the device is for supporting objects, such as potted plants, at an elevated position around an upstanding member.
In one embodiment the device is for transporting objects, such as laundry or animal feed.
In one embodiment the device further comprises a plug element for plugging the aperture within the collar.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described hereinbelow by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 illustrates a collecting/supporting device in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention when erected on a tree and supported by a planter; Figure 2 illustrates the collecting/supporting device of Figure 1 in the collapsed configuration; Figure 3 illustrates the framework of the collecting/supporting device of Figure 1; Figure 4 illustrates the closure element of the collecting/supporting device of Figure 1; and Figures 5(a) and (b) illustrate a plug element for use with the collecting/supporting device of Figure 1.
The collecting/supporting device comprises an erectable platform 3, in this embodiment a tray of circular shape, which, when erected, is located about the trunk of a tree T and is a self-supporting structure, which can be supported at a height above the ground, such as on the upper rim of a planter P, as illustrated in Figure 1, or alternatively on the ground.
The platform 3 has application in collecting fruit or other debris, such as clippings, from the associated tree T, or in supporting objects, such as potted plants, at an elevated position around the trunk of the associated tree T. The platform 3 comprises a framework 7 and a flexible sheet material 9 which is supported between the framework 7, which together provide a base 11 and a peripheral rim 15 which extends around the periphery of the base 11 when the platform 3 is erected, and allows the platform 3 to be collapsed when not in use, as illustrated in Figure 2.
In this embodiment the framework 7 is configured to collapse radially, substantially in-plane, in the manner of a foldable fan, which allows for convenient storage.
In this embodiment the base 11 is a substantially horizontal surface and the rim 15 is an upstanding rim which extends around the periphery of the base 11.
In this embodiment the framework 7 and the sheet material 9 of the platform 3 are provided as a single, integral structure, here heat welded.
As illustrated in Figure 3, the framework 7 comprises a central collar 16, in this embodiment a split ring, which is located around the trunk of the tree T, and rigid arms 17a-i which extend outwardly from the collar 16, such that, with the platform 3 erected, the arms 17a-i extend radially at intervals and support the sheet material 9 therebetween.
In this embodiment the collar 16 comprises a flexible element, here formed of rubber, which allows for the arms 17a-i to be collapsed.
In an alternative embodiment the collar 16 could comprise a track which is located around the trunk of the tree T and in which the ends of the arms 17a-i are slideably disposed between an erected configuration, as illustrated in Figure 1, and a collapsed configuration, as illustrated in Figure 2.
In this embodiment two adjacent, endmost arms 17a, i include fastening means 21, which, when fastened together, provide the sheet material 9 as a continuous surface.
In this embodiment the fastening means 21 comprise Velcro (RTM) fasteners. In an alternative embodiment the fastening means 21 could comprise other hook-and-eye fasteners. In other embodiments the fastening means 21 could comprise any form of suitable fasteners.
In this embodiment the sheet material 9 comprises a fabric, preferably formed of a plastics material, such as Nylon (RTM).
In this embodiment the platform 3 comprises a closure element 25 which is located within the collar 16 and acts close the opening between the collar 16 and the trunk of the tree T. In this embodiment the closure element 25 comprises a plurality of resilient flaps 27 which are configured to close the opening within the collar 16 in the absence of a tree trunk and be splayed upwards and outwards when fitted to the tree T. The collecting/supporting device, in being a self-supporting structure, advantageously does not require any separate supporting elements, and, through the provision of the rigid arms 17a-i, allows objects, such as potted plants, to be supported thereon at an elevated position.
Figures 5(a) and (b) illustrate a plug element 31 for plugging the aperture within the collar 16 when the collecting/supporting device is removed from the tree 1, thereby preventing material from falling through the aperture in the collar 16 while the collecting/supporting device is being transported.
In this embodiment the plug element 31 comprises a solid element which is a tight fit in the aperture in the collar 16.
Finally, it will be understood that the present invention has been described in its preferred embodiments and can be modified in many different ways without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
For example, in other embodiments the collecting/supporting device can have application other than with use with a tree, in catching all manner of materials, such as debris as when cutting timber or making pottery, and transporting objects, such as laundry or animal feed.
In one embodiment the platform 3 can be provided with handles, preferably to sections at opposite edges thereof when erected, such as to allow for transport when erected.
In another embodiment the collecting/supporting device can be provided with a loop by which the device can be hung up.
In still another embodiment one or more of the arms 17a-i could include an extension which acts as a divider, which can be used when sorting material on the platform 3.
