Abstract

A cover for the neck of an opened screw-cap bottle comprises a rigid sleeve 1 having an open end 2. The sleeve may have an internal screw thread (4, figure 2) to secure the cover on the bottle neck and may incorporate a drip tray 6. The diameter of the opening 2 may be the same diameter as the internal diameter of the bottle neck such that it does not interfere with pouring from the bottle. The cap may cover the screw thread at the bottle neck and any residual metal foil or the like left from the closure of the bottle to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the opened bottle. The external surface of the cover may be smooth, textured or include embossing, perforation, printing, decoration or text of any colour.

Description

I
Beverage bottle rigid neck cover This invention relates to an open ended decorative rigid sleeve to enhance the appearance and safety of opened screw cap beverage bottles and which can remain in place without affecting the pouring of the contents of the bottle.
Wine and other beverage bottles which have a screw cap closure have a thread moulded into the bottle neck at the mouth of the bottle and sometimes a section of metal foil sleeve covering the lower part of the bottle neck which is a residual portion of the closure system. These features are unsightly and project an unappealing, industrial, functional appearance when a sophisticated and visually pleasing atmosphere is preferred at the point of use of the bottle such as in a restaurant or when entertaining guests at borne. Also, the serrated or torn edge of the metal sleeve may snag on any napkin or clothing which may come into contact with it. Conventional bottle neck drip collars, labels and bottle stoppers do not hide the threaded portion of the bottle and nor do they provide a smooth uninterrupted sleeve between the opening of the bottle neck and the residual metal sleeve or foil surrounding the neck. To overcome these problems the present invention proposes a rigid sleeve which fits over the bottle neck and covers the threaded portion of the bottle neck and upper edge of any metal or foil sleeve remaining on the bottle neck, utilising the moulded thread on the bottle as a means of securing it.
An example of the invention will now be described by reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows an external view of the invention.
Figure 2 shows a cross sectional view through the invention.
Figure 3 shows the invention fitted to a bottle.
Figure 4 shows the invention with a drip tray incorporated.
In figure 1, a rigid sleeve 1 made from plastic or metal or glass or ceramics fits over the neck of a wine or other beverage bottle. it is held onto the bottle by means of an internal thread that matches and meshes with the closure thread on the bottle neck.
The opening 2 at the top end of the sleeve is of the same diameter as the inside diameter of the bottle neck opening. The opening 3 at the bottom of the sleeve is of sufficient diameter to fit closely over any metal or foil sleeve on the neck of the bottle.
in figure 2, a cross section view through the invention, the internal threaded portion 4 matches the exterior threaded portion of the beverage bottle onto which it screws. The length of the sleeve 5 is sufficient to cover the neck of the bottle from the top opening to the point at which the neck meets the body of the bottle or of any lesser length that would cover the moulded thread of the bottle neck and allow the incorporation within the tube of the necessary threaded portion required to mate with the thread on the bottle neck The external body of the tubeS can be smooth or textured or can incorporate embossing or perforation or printing or decoration or text It can be made in any colour.
Figure 4 shows an alternative embodiment that incorporates a drip catching tray 6.
