Description

DEVICE FOR SUPPORTING A TAPERED POST
The invention relates to a device for use in the erection of tapered posts, for example road signs, fence posts, lamp posts, bollards and the like.
Prior art arrangements for supporting a post in the ground vary from digging a suitably sized hole and filling it with concrete around the post to complicated arrangements with security means to prevent unauthorised removal of the post.
The prior art arrangements have a variety of different problems such as having to hold the post in position while the concrete sets or having complicated housings that are expensive to manufacture and awkward to assemble. It is becoming more common, as materials develop, for posts to be made with a tapered cross-section such that they are wider at the base than at the top. Supporting such posts brings additional problems over those of supporting posts with an even cross-section as any mounting means has to be able to accommodate a base that is wider than the cross-section of the post at the supporting point.
The present provides a simple means of supporting a tapered post that is easy to manufacture, simple to install and provides an effective means of mounting different types of tapered post with a similar supporting device. Further, the invention provides a device which provides a solid support for posts having at least a portion of the post with a tapered cross-section but which is relatively resistant to a casual vandal, yet enables the speedy erection and replacement of posts.
The invention provides a device for supporting a post having a tapered base portion, wherein a diameter of the base portion decreases away from the end of the post, comprising a tubular body portion which is adapted to be firmly installed in a supporting stratum and which has a base and an open end adapted to receive a post and having a diameter suitable to receive the base of the post, a collar portion attached to the open end of the body portion and having an opening adapted to receive said post, a positioning plate comprising one or more sections adapted to be seated in said collar portion and that comprise an opening adapted to receive said post, said opening having a smaller diameter than the tubular body portion, a sealing ring adapted to be seated on said positioning plate in said collar portion and a retention ring comprising one or more sections adapted to be seated on said positioning plate in said collar portion and that comprise an opening adapted to receive said post, said opening having a chamfered profile that acts against the sealing ring such that the chamfer angle forces the sealing ring towards the post when mounted in the body portion to thereby grip the post inserted therein and retain the post in tight engagement.
It has been previously suggested that a post can be supported in a base portion by axially compressing a retention ring against a sealing ring so that the sealing ring is compressed radially against the post. However, for a tapered post, this arrangement has problems in that the narrower cross-section of the post at the supported position creates a weaker sealing action with the sealing ring. Further, as the base portion has to be of a suitable diameter to accommodate the base of the post, the sealing ring itself may be forced into the base portion. This problem is overcome by the use of the centring ring of the present invention, which holds the tapered post in position and supports the sealing ring in a position to enable it to create a radial compression against the post.
Preferably the tubular body portion is inserted in a hole in a supporting stratum such as the ground. Advantageously the body portion is positioned such that the collar portion is flush with the surface of the ground when in position. The tapered post to be supported may be any suitable cross-sectional shape such as circular, square, oval, hexagonal.
The body portion can be of any suitable cross section such as circular, square, oval, hexagonal. The body portion is advantageously, but not necessarily, of the same cross-sectional shape as the post to be supported. Advantageously the body portion is sized so that the base of the post is a close fit within the body portion to limit movement of the post within the body portion.
Preferably the collar portion has a raised lip at its outer circumference to protect the retention ring and positioning plate when fitted therein. The opening in the collar portion is of a suitable size such that the base of the post can be inserted through the collar portion into the body portion.
Preferably the device further includes a centring ring positioned in the body portion, the centring ring having an opening adapted to receive the base of the post. The centring ring acts to hold the post in position within the tubular body. It may comprise a single piece or multi-piece ring and may have a chamfered inner face to more securely hold the base of the post in position. It may be positioned on the base of the body portion or at any suitable position within the body portion.
Preferably the retention ring may be formed in one piece. Alternatively the retention ring may be formed in two or more pieces and can be arranged within the collar portion to fit around the post. Preferably the pieces are fixed together to form a ring around the post.
If the retention ring is made of a single piece, the device is assembled by placing the post in the tubular body and then placing the retention ring over the top of the post and lowering it into position into the collar portion. If the retention ring is made of two or more pieces it may be assembled around the post in the collar portion.
The opening of the retention ring that fits around the post when mounted is preferably of the same shape as the cross-section of the post. The opening has a chamfered profile that slopes from the top of the ring away from the opening to form a surface that acts against the sealing ring to push the sealing ring radially towards the post. Attachment means such as bolts or screws are used to attach the retention ring to the collar. As the attachments means are tightened to bring the retention ring down towards the collar portion, the chamfer acts to press the sealing ring towards the post. As the retention ring is tightened into position the sealing ring grips the post inserted therein to retain the post in tight engagement. Advantageously the sealing ring can form a water-tight seal around the post as well.
Preferably the sealing ring is formed from a deformable plastics material. In one arrangement the material of the sealing ring is relatively stiff and the sealing ring is pushed towards and against the post. In another arrangement the material of the sealing ring may be deformable and as the retention ring is tightened the pressure on the sealing ring will cause the sealing ring to deform and press against the post.
The angle of the chamfer is selected to correspond to the material of the sealing ring and push or deform the sealing ring as desired. The chamfer angle is greater than zero and less than 900. Preferably the chamfer angle is between 5° and 30°.
In an alternative arrangement with a deformable sealing ring material, the chamfer may be formed as a cut out section at the lower edge of the retention ring to squash the sealing ring and deform it towards the post to grip the post.
The sealing ring may be made as a circular seal or may be split. If the sealing ring is made of a single circular piece, the device is assembled by placing the post in the tubular body and then placing the sealing ring over the top of the post and lowering it into position into the collar portion. If the sealing ring is split, it may be assembled around the post in the collar portion. A split ring may be in the form of a single length piece that can be wrapped around the post or may be in the form of two or more pieces that can be arranged around the post.
The positioning plate is sited in the collar portion. The central opening of the positioning plate is of a smaller diameter than the opening of the collar portion and is sized to be suitable for the diameter of the post at the level of the collar portion. In this way the positioning plate may serve to stabilize the position of the post and also acts to support the sealing ring to prevent it being pushed down into the tubular body when the retention ring is tightened.
Advantageously the positioning plate is made of a single piece but it may alternatively comprise two or more pieces. If the positioning plate is made of a single piece, the device is assembled by placing the post in the tubular body and then placing the positioning plate over the top of the post and lowering it into position into the collar portion. If the positioning plate is made of two or more pieces it may be assembled around the post in the collar portion.
The body portion, the collar portion, the positioning plate and the retention collar may be made of any suitable material such as cast iron, stainless steel, metal alloys or plastics material.
The invention will now be described, by way of example only, by reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 shows a schematic drawing in cross-section of a tapered post mounted in a device according to the invention; Figures 2a-2d show alternative chamfer arrangements for the retention ring of the device of the invention; Figure 3 show a side view of a device according to the invention with a tapered post arranged therein; and Figure 4 show a top view of a collar portion and sealing ring of the device of the invention.
As shown in Figure 1, a device for supporting a tapered post comprises a tubular body portion I which can be installed in a supporting stratum 2 such as the ground and which has an open end 3 adapted to receive a tapered post 4. The tapered post 4 has a diameter d1 at its base that is greater than a diameter d2 along the length of the post. A collar portion 5 is attached to the top of the body portion I by suitable means such as welding or bolts or may be integrally formed with the body portion 1. The collar portion 5 has an opening into which the tapered post can be inserted.
A positioning plate Ills sited in the collar portion 5. The positioning plate 11 has a central opening 12 which is of a smaller diameter than the opening of the collar portion 5. The central opening 12 is sized to be suitable for the diameter of the post 4 at the level of the collar portion 5. In this way the positioning plate 11 serves to stabilize the position of the post 4 at the level of the collar portion 5 and also acts to support a sealing ring 6. The sealing ring 6 is positioned in the collar portion 5 on the positioning plate 12.
The sealing ring 6 may be an "o" ring or may be split to fit round the tapered post 4. The sealing ring 6 is sized to fit round the tapered post 4 when held against it when the tapered post 4 is mounted.
A retention ring 7 is seated in the collar portion 5 on the positioning plate 11 and is fixed into the collar portion 5 by suitable retention means such as bolts 8 (as shown) or screws. The retention ring 7 may be formed as a single section though which the tapered post 4 can be inserted or which can be placed over the tapered post 4 once the post is in position. Alternatively the retention ring 7 may be formed in two or more sections to be fitted round the tapered post 4. The retention ring 7 has an opening 9 adapted to receive the post 4 and the opening 9 has a chamfered profile 10 that acts against the sealing ring 6 such that the chamfer angle forces the sealing ring 6 towards the post 4 when it is mounted in the body portion 1. The action of the retention ring 7 being tightened axially acts to cause the sealing ring 6 to radially grip the post 4 and retain the post 4 in tight engagement. The sealing ring 6 may be made of a relatively hard material and the action of the retention ring 7 acts to move the sealing ring 6 towards the post 4 to grip it in position. Alternatively the sealing ring 6 may be made of a relatively soft material that deforms as the retention ring 7 is tightened to squash from its original shape to press against the post 4.
Advantageously a centring ring 13 may be positioned in the base of the tubular body I to hold the base of the post 4 in position within the tubular body 1. The centring ring 13 has an opening 14 adapted to receive the base of the post 4. The centring ring 13 may comprise a single piece or multi-piece ring and may have a chamfered inner face 15 to more securely hold the base of the post 4 in position. It may be positioned on the base of the body portion or at any suitable position within the body portion. In an alternative arrangement, it may be positioned so that the end of the post 4 sits over the centring ring 13.
As shown in Figure 2, the angle of the chamfer 10 can be varied depending on the material used for the sealing ring 6. In Figure 2a, the angle is relatively small and the action of the retention ring 7 will be to press the sealing ring 6 inwards towards the post 4. As the angle may be increased, as shown in Figure 2b, the action of the retention ring 7 will be to deform the sealing ring 6 as well as press it towards the post 4, depending on the material of the sealing ring 6. Figures 2c and 2d show alternative arrangements where the chamfer 10 is in form of the cut out section in the lower part of the retention ring 7.
Figure 3 shows the device in position with the retention ring 7 bolted down in the collar 5 and pressing the sealing ring 6 against the tapered post 4 inserted in the body portion 1.
Figure 4 shows a sealing ring 6 of the split type in the collar portion 5, with the retention ring 7 removed.
The device of the invention is easy and effective to manufacture and operate. It is much simpler in structure than prior art arrangements that are able to provide a similar level of grip and sealing for a tapered post mounting arrangement.
