Abstract

The present invention is a thoracic support belt worn by patients who have had a median sternotomy for heart surgery. The device comprises an elastic support band (a) which, in use, is wrapped around a user and fastened with hook and loop fastenings (c). A cushion (b) is provided which is placed on the chest of the user, i.e. at the anterior thorax surface. The device improves sternal stability, reduces pain associated with coughing and reduces the risk of sternum dehiscence and infection after surgery.

Description
Back ground of the invention Disruption and infection of median sternotomy wounds after heart surgery are grave complications often associated with prolonged hospitalization, high cost, and significant mortality.
A vest has been described in the journal of interactive cardiovascular and thoracic surgery 10(2010) 714-718 Post thorax support vest (Epple mc, Vienna, Austria) .It provides anteroposterior stabilization of the patient thorax while holding the two halves of the sternum in place. The two cushions are placed longitudinally to the left and the right side of the sternum and serve as shock absorbers when the patient coughs or breathes deeply, and also support the sternum when turning the patient in bed.
The present invention is a thoracic belt Fig [1] made from fabric material with exclusive stretch facility. One cushion is placed in front of the belt. It covers the anterior surface of the chest.
Description
The present invention Figure [1] is a thoracic belt made from fabric material with exclusive stretch facility. One cushion (b) is placed in front of the belt (a). It covers the anterior surface of the chest. It serves as a shock absorber when the patient coughs.
The belt is positioned on the chest with top edge just bellow the axilla with the cushion on the chest above the sternotomy wound. The belt is stretched out side ways and wrapped around the patient and then pressed closed to secure using its Velcro strip (c).
The belt gives circumferential stabilization of the thorax after median sternotomy for heart surgery and it will reduce the cough associated subjective sternotomy pain.
Patients who have median sternotomy for heart surgery wear this belt in the period postoperatively to support the chest while encouraging mobility and promoting muscle redevelopment. F 3 Claim
