Abstract

248,108. Oil Well Engineering Co., Ltd., (Hild, F. W.). Dec. 5, 1924. Borehole apparatus. - In a rotary well boring apparatus comprising a rotary table supported on a base, detachable bushings co-operating with the table and base respectively to impart rotation to the drill stem and to support by removable slips the drill rods &c. while adding to, or removing, the latter, an elevator cooperates with the drill rods &c. for lifting the bushing from the basemember. Lubricating means, a holddown ring for the table and means for locking the drive-bushing to the table are also provided. The rotary table 26, driven by a pinion 28, is held down on a base frame 25 by a segmental ring 48 bolted to the base and having an inward projection 144 entirely surrounding the table; lubricant containers are provided in the ring segments to supply lubricant to a felt strip 145 in the projection 144. The table runs on roller bearings 40, the base frame having lubricant containers 148, Fig. 15, supplying lubricant through passages 163 to the lower bearing race, a sediment trap 160 being provided and the flow of oil being adjustably controlled by a screw 174 cut away on a slope at the lower end and held in adjusted position by a spring 176 engaging a groove; the lubricant containers 148 are connected by a housing 151 for the drive pinion 28 and have hinged covers and removable screens. A divided drive bushing 75 has a conical lower part 77 and a polygonal upper part engaging correspondingly-formed parts of the rotary table and has a central hub 78 square or fluted internally, and engaging the drill stem; the drive bushing is held in the table by spring pressed bolts 198, Fig. 18, engaging recesses 199 in the table, the inner ends of the bolts being engaged by pivoted levers 191, the upper ends 195 of these levers normally closing apertures 180 in the bushing, whilst on the insertion of lifting hooks 181 for removing t.he bushing, the levers 191 are depressed and automatically free the bolts 198. Within, and free from, the table, is an internally coned bushing 55 resting on a ring 52 in the base frame 25 and held against rotation by lugs 62 engaging vertical slots 53 in the ring 52, while a pin 63 holds the bushing 55 against lifting; for making up, or breaking down, the drill rods, casings &c., the lower parts of the drill rods &c. are held against dropping or rotation by vertically and horizontally serrated wedge slips 82, Fig. 5 placed in the bushing 55, and the upper part of the drill rods &c. is rotated from the table 26 through a post 93 and a slidably connected sleeve 92 supporting a wrench 90. A set of bushings 55 is provided for casings &c. of different sizes and for large casings the bushing has a cylindrical lower end and a conical upper end projecting above the table. The lower drill rod &c. may have projections adapted to engage and lift the bushing 55 from the table, or wedge slips 100, Fig. 6, may be inserted in the bushing and hooked thereto by links 105, whereby on lifting the drill rods &c., a collar thereon engages the slips 100 to lift the latter and the bushing 55. When attaching a drill bit to the rods, the bit 120, Fig. 9, is supported by an angle iron frame work 118 resting on the ring 52 in the base frame and held against rotation by U-shaped connecting members 125 engaging the slots 53.
