Abstract

A reinforcement layer for repairing wooden shed roofs comprises a waterproof reinforcement layer 101 the shape of an existing wooden shed roof, an extrusion for the roof apex 102 and a plurality of screws 103. The user positions the reinforcement layer on top of the wooden roof of an existing shed. The plastic extrusion is positioned on top of the reinforcement layer, at the apex of the shed roof. The user then screws the plastic extrusion in place, by passing the screws through the extrusion and reinforcement layer, into the wooden shed roof. Preferably the reinforcement layer 101 is shaped for a gable roof. The waterproof reinforcement layer may comprise chipboard and a waterproof resin sheet. Other options include a reinforcement layer made from moulded fibreglass. The extrusion for the roof apex may be shaped for the apex of a gable roof.

Description

A reinforcement layer for repairing wooden shed roofs
Background of the Invention
[1] The present invention relates to a retrofittable layer to reinforce and protect the roofs of wooden shed structures.
[2] Wooden sheds are very popular amongst homeowners because of their strength, aesthetic, versatility and scope for customization to meet the user's specific needs.
[3] They do, however, have significant disadvantages. Due to the properties of wood, exposure to harsh climate conditions such as rain or strong UV light can lead the material to rot, split, warp or chip, or develop mould and mildew. Furthermore, wood is very vulnerable to wood-boring insects. This can lead the roofs of wooden sheds in particular to leak, ruining the items stored inside.
[4] Wooden shed roofs are most commonly constructed of chipboard, but this is very vulnerable when used outdoors.
Without repeated careful waterproofing, using waterproof paints, chipboard roofs can swell and warp, creating leaks. A felt layer is often installed on top of the roof, but as this can be installed incorrectly by non-professionals, leaks regularly continue.
[5] Timber roofs are more suited to outdoor use as they are stronger, but they still suffer from the weaknesses listed above and, with age, split or swell and allow leakage. This requires the homeowner to purchase a new shed in its entirety, or pay for expensive professional repairs.
Brief Summary of the Invention
[6] It can be seen by the forgoing that a need has arisen for a simple means of repairing and reinforcing the roofs of wooden sheds that may be installed by the owner without professional assistance. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a device for this purpose.
[7] To this end, disclosed is a reinforcement layer for repairing wooden shed roofs, comprising: a waterproof reinforcement layer the shape of an existing wooden shed roof; an extrusion for the roof apex; a plurality of screws.
[8] The user positions the reinforcement layer on top of the wooden roof of an existing shed. The plastic extrusion is positioned on top of the reinforcement layer, at the apex of the shed roof. The user then screws the plastic extrusion in place, by passing the screws through the extrusion and reinforcement layer into the wooden shed roof.
[9] An advantage of the present invention is that it allows owners of wooden sheds to correctly repair ageing shed roofs without requiring expensive professional assistance.
[10] A further advantage is that the device may be used to reinforce wooden shed roofs before damage has occurred, preventing leakage and the need for expensive repairs.
Brief Description of the Several Views of the Drawing [11] The invention can be better understood with reference to the following drawings, in which: [12] Figure one shows an isometric view of a preferred embodiment of the invention.
[13] Figure two shows an exploded view of a preferred embodiment of the invention.
Detailed Description of an Embodiment
[14] In a preferred embodiment of the invention, shown in figures one and two, a reinforcement layer for repairing wooden shed roofs is disclosed, comprising: a waterproof reinforcement layer the shape of an existing wooden shed roof 101; an extrusion for the roof apex 102; a plurality of screws 103.
[15] The waterproof reinforcement layer 101 is positioned over the existing roof of a wooden shed, and is ideally shaped to fit gable roofs, comprising two connected rectangular surfaces. The layer 101 may be supplied in a range of sizes, such that it may be used on a wide range of wooden sheds.
[16] The waterproof reinforcement layer 101 may comprise a layer of chipboard covered with a waterproof resin sheet, shown in the drawings. It may alternatively be formed of moulded fibreglass, or any other suitably waterproof material known in the art.
[17] The waterproof reinforcement layer 101 may comprise a series of eyelets around its outer edges, allowing the edges to be screwed to the wooden shed roof at all sides, holding it in position.
[18] The extrusion for the roof apex 102 is a narrow strip positioned above the waterproof reinforcement layer at the apex of the wooden shed roof, shaped to fit onto the apex of a gable roof. It is ideally made from plastic, perhaps a thermoplastic such as polypropylene. It may also comprise a series of apertures along the length of the extrusion to receive screws 103 to affix the extrusion 102 and the reinforcing layer 101 to a wooden shed roof.
[19] There may be as many screws 103 as are necessary to adequately affix the reinforcement layer 101 and the extrusion 102 to a wooden shed roof. The screws may be any kind of screws known in the art, but ideally they are self-tapping for ease of installation.
