Abstract

248,059. Fellows, H. M. Nov. 25, 1924. Navigable courses, systems of indicating; foghorn signals; producing intermittent audible signals.-Ships are steered along a predetermined course during foggy weather by the emission of long or " dash '' signals and short or " dot " signals respectively from two separate stations on opposite sides of the course under the control of a common timing device, the two sets of signals being so spaced and timed that when the ship is steering a correct course the signals will be heard simultaneously. According to one arrangement, a series of " dot " signals is emitted in an interval of time corresponding to the duration of one " dash " signal so that, if the ship is steering a correct course, the normal signal heard will be simultaneous " dashes " and " dots, " but when any deviation from the source occurs one or more " dot " signals will be heard before or after the " dash " signal. In another arrangement, the duration of the series of " dot " signals is such that the first " dot " signal precedes and the last " dot " signal succeeds the " dash " signal, so that the normal signal to be heard on the ship is " dot, " " dash, " " dot, " while any deviation from the course will cause the " dash " to be displaced to the beginning or end of the signal heard. Or the series of " dot " signals may be of shorter duration than the " dash " signal. In the apparatus shown for carrying out the signalling, a drum 18 rotated at a predetermined speed by clockwork or a motor carries a broad contact 24 associated with a horn 1 for emitting the " dash " signals, and a series of narrow contacts 25 associated with the horn 2 for emitting the " dot " signals, the contacts 24, 25 being directly opposite to each other or spaced apart according as to whether it is desired to emit the signals simultaneously or at a determined time interval apart. The contacts are arranged to close electric circuits through solenoids 11, 12 which respectively control the operation of valves 5, 6 for admitting from tanks 3, 4 compressed air for actuating the horns 1, 2. The invention is also stated to be applicable for guiding aircraft. Specification 196,649 is referred to.
