Abstract
The cover has a first surface 104 for covering a lid region of the bin, and a second surface. 106 for covering side regions of the bin. A first edge 108 of the second surface is joined to a perimeter 110 of the first surface and a second edge 112 of the second surface seals against a side of the bin. The second edge can be elasticated. This arrangement serves to reduce emission of foul odours produced by household waste and prevent flies and insects from entering the bin. The cover can have a zip opening 114 to allow a user to access the bin without having to remove the cover. The zip opening can include an overlap 116 to prevent rain from damaging the zip. Part of a path 118 of the zip can be across the first surface, which means that the cover stays in position over the bin when the zipper is undone. The cover can be sufficiently loose near handles of the bin to allow a user to engage with the handles and move the bin easily. The cover extends downwards from the top of the bin between about one third and two thirds of the height of the bin.
Description
Patent Application of Jonathan Gardner for Waterproof wheelie bin cover
Field of Invention
This invention relates to a waterproof cover for a wheelie bin.
Background of the Invention
Wheelie bins are often a source of foul odours, particularly during the summer months, and more so if collected on a biweekly basis. Furthermore, they regularly attract flies and other insects, leading the bins to become extremely unhygienic.
Disclosure of Invention
From the foregoing, it may be appreciated that a need has arisen for a waterproof cover for a wheelie bin which serves to reduce emission of foul odours produced by household waste and prevent the attraction of flies.
According to various, but not necessarily all, embodiment of the present invention there is provided a waterproof cover for a wheelie bin which has a first surface for covering a lid region of the bin, and a second surface for covering side regions of the bin. A first edge of the second surface is joined to a perimeter of the first surface and a second edge of the second surface seals against a side of the bin. The second edge can be elasticated.
This arrangement serves to reduce emission of foul odours produced by household waste and prevent flies from entering the bin. The cover can have a zip opening to allow a user to access the bin without having to remove the cover. The zip opening can include an overlap to prevent rain from damaging the zip. Part of a path of the zip can be across the first surface, which means that the cover stays in position over the bin when the zipper is undone. The cover can be sufficiently loose near handles of the bin to allow a user to engage with the handles and move the bin easily. The cover can extend downwards from the top of the bin between about one third and two thirds of the height of the bin.
Brief Description of Drawings
For a more complete explanation of the present invention and the technical advantages thereof, reference is now made to the following description and the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows an overview of the present invention.
Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention
Embodiments of the present invention and their technical advantages may be better understood by referring to Figure 1, which shows a waterproof cover (100) for domestic household waste wheelie bins (102) . The bin cover offers an economical and environmentally-friendly solution to eliminate foul odours emitted from household waste and pests and prevent the attraction of flies and insects. It also offers a solution for overflowing bins due to its length. Furthermore, it reduces the need for using two bin liners, again making it an environmentally-friendly solution. The cover can fit standard council bin sizes of 120 and 240 litres and is also available for recycling bins.
The cover has a first surface (104) for covering a lid region of the bin, and a second surface (106) for covering side regions of the bin. A first edge (108) of the second surface is joined to a perimeter (110) of the first surface and a second edge (112) of the second surface seals against a side of the bin. The second edge can be elasticated. This arrangement serves to reduce emission of foul odours produced by household waste, and prevents flies from entering the bin.
The cover can have a zip opening (114) to allow a user to access the bin without having to remove the cover. The zip opening can include an overlap (116) to prevent rain from damaging the zip. Part of a path (118) of the zip can be across the first surface, which means that the cover stays in position over the bin when the zipper is undone.
The cover can be sufficiently loose near handles of the bin to allow a user to engage with the handles and move the bin easily.
The cover extends downwards from the top of the bin between about one third and two thirds of the height of the bin.
In use, the user simply slides the cover over the bin. The elastic bottom of the cover seals against the bin. The bin cover has a plastic zip opening located at the top to allow the user to quickly access the bin without having to lift the entire cover. There is an overlap to prevent rain from damaging the zip. The shape of the bin allows the user to grab onto the handles and move the bin easily. The zipper shape allows the cover to stay on whilst the zipper is undone.
The cover material can include a polyethylene-based poiy fabric, for example, Cancacon. These fabrics offer a superior strength to weight ratio, rendering the cover tear-resistant and preventing foraging creatures from rummaging and attacking waste. Polyethylene fabrics are also highly water and chemical resistant and do not degrade on exposure to sunlight.
Claims (7)
- Claims 1. A waterproof cover (100) for a wheelie bin (102) including: (a) a first surface (104) for covering a lid region of the bin; and (b) a second surface (106) for covering side regions of the bin, a first edge (108) joined to a perimeter (110) of the first surface and a second edge (112) sealing against a side of the bin; whereby emission of foul odours produced by household waste and attraction of insects is reduced.
- 2. The cover of claim 1 in which the second edge is elasticated.
- 3. The cover of claim 1 or 2 including a zip opening (114) to allow a user to access the bin without having to remove the cover.
- 4. The cover of claim 3 including an overlap (116) to prevent rain from damaging the zip.5. The cover of claim 3 or 4 in which part of a path (118) of the zip is across the first surface, whereby the cover stays in position over the bin when the zipper is undone.
- 5. The cover of any of the preceding claims in which the cover is sufficiently loose near handles of the bin to allow a user to engage with the handles and move the bin easily.
- 6. The cover of any of the preceding claims including a polyethylene-based poly fabric.
- 7. The cover of any of the preceding claims in which the second surface extends from the first surface between about one third and two thirds of a height of the bin.
