Abstract
An improved bandage is formed from a length of bandage material 10 (preferably a knitted fabric) and a wound dressing pad 11 is positioned for the wound. A fastener material 12, which may be a hook and loop material, engages with the material of the bandage 10 to releasably hold the bandage material in place over the wound.

Improved bandage and/or dressing This invention relates to an improved bandage or dressing.
Conventional bandages and dressings are commonly provided in elongate form and are used for dressings for wounds of many different types and are normally configured so as to be capable of being wound around the part of the body where the wound is located.
Bandages and dressings of elongate form can be used to cover areas which are affected by burn injuries and are usually designed so as to reduce the time necessary for the application of the bandage or dressing to the wound. This can be very important in areas where serious injuries occur for example on the battlefield.
Notwithstanding the above, there is a requirement for a bandage or dressing which can be applied to a wound without significant delay and which can be considerably more effective than existing bandages of this from. In particular, the bandage or dressing of such a type finds particular application in the dressing of wound caused by burns.
Thus and in accordance with the present invention there is provided an improved bandage comprising a length of bandage material having fixed thereto a wound dressing pad for positioning over the wound wherein said bandage further includes a fastener material which is adapted to engage with the material of the bandage to secure the dressing in position over the wound.
With this arrangement, it is possible to provide an improved bandage or dressing in which respective parts of said bandage can be held in position relative to each other by a suitable fastener material. A dressing formed in the above manner can easily and conveniently be wound around a part of the body affected covering up the wound with suitable positioned pad.
Preferably the bandage material comprises a knitted fabric and said fastener comprises a male part of a conventional hook and pile fastener for example VELCRO® material which holds the bandage in position with the pad overlying the wound.
The invention will now be described further by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawing comprising a single figure of which shows a schematic representation of one embodiment of improved bandage in accordance with the present invention.
Referring now to the drawing, there is shown an improved bandage or dressing 10 in accordance with the present invention.
The bandage comprises a elongate relatively long length of material of suitable form such as for example a knitted or other suitable type of fabric as desired or as appropriate. Stitched or otherwise permanently or releasably attached to a part of the material forming the bandage is a suitable pad 11 of absorbent material which is adapted to in use cover the wound.
At one end of the bandage 10 is provided a fastener 12 in the form of a piece of material stitched or otherwise attached to the bandage and which is adapted to releaseably attach an end of the bandage to the material of the bandage when it has been applied.
The fastener 12 can comprise one part of a hook and pile fastener of a type sold under the trademark VELCRO®. In such circumstances only one part of the connected fastener is required since the bandage material itself provides the remaining part of the fastener.
The pad 11 can be formed from any suitable or necessary material to ensure its intended purpose is and usually comprises of one or more layers of different materials which act to retain any fluid in the wound within the structure of the pad itself to avoid leakage.
In use, for example, attendance of a paramedic or other health professional at the site of an accident or other incident e.g. a fire, may be required to help one or more persons suffering from burns at the scene. In order that any wounds/burns can be properly retained in clean and relatively sterile condition until the patient can be transferred to hospital, the pad 11 of the bandage is placed over the wound and the rest of the bandage material is wound around the pad and wound to retain the pad in its position.
When the winding of the bandage around the pad is almost complete the fastener device can be used to retain the bandage in its position and the tightness of the bandage can be adjusted by pulling the loose end of the bandage tight and then securing the bandage relative to the wound dressing pad using the fastener to form a releasable cooperation of the bandage material and the faster.
If needed to, or after arrival at hospital, the bandage can be released by simply pulling the fastner 12 away from the bandage material and unwinding the bandage once again.
It will of course be appreciated that with the simple attachment mechanism included in the improved bandage of the present invention, considerable time is saved which would be otherwise lost in existing arrangements due to the nature of the fastening, is avoided or at least minimised by use of the arrangement described above.
It is of course to be understood that the invention is not intended to be restricted to the details of the above embodiment which are described by way of example only.
