Abstract

Apparatus for removing a layer of skin from a pipe particularly a so called profuse pipe comprises an elongate member having a gap formed by portions of the member and into which gap a peeled off portion of the skin is inserted and a handle disposed to rotate the member about its axis so that, in use, the skin is gypped by the portions of the pipe and is moved around the circumference of the pipe to remove the entire layer.

Description

Title: Apparatus for Removing a Plastic Skin from a Pipe The present invention relates to apparatus for removing a plastic skin from a pipe particularly a so called "profuse pipe" and particularly from such a pipe made of polyethylene (pe) material.
Water and gas utilities use a "profuse pipe" of pe. These pipes have a thin protective layer of a peelable skin coating which can be of pe. The layer is a full pipe covering to keep the pipes clean and protect them from dirt. Methods are available to enable the pipes to be joined together including the well known welding methods of electrofusion or butt fusion or by a mechanical method to extend the length of the pipe. In the methods, adjoining portions of the pipes are melted and allowed to solidify to form a weld. It is therefore important that the adjoining ends of the pipes are clean to permit a good welded joint to be formed.
To enable the pipes to be joined, a band of peelable skin must first be removed from the end of each pipe and then the run of pipes is connected together either by electrofusion or butt fusion. Following this an off-take is connected to one of the pipes and this requires a window to be cut either at the top or on one side of the pipe.
A skin cutter is available which both pierces the peelable skin and then lifts one edge of the skin to enable removal. Even with the edge lifted removal of the skin is both difficult and time consuming.
The current method of skin removal is to grip the lifted skin with the fingers, a pair of pliers or with pipe grips and then to pull the skin away from the pipe body. This activity sometimes needs to be undertaken in confined or restricted places. The skin can tear or break suddenly and injuries can be sustained.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an apparatus for removing a layer of skin from a profuse pipe without the disadvantages of the present method. * I. * * *
* According to the present invention we provide apparatus for removing a layer * *: of skin from a so called profuse pipe comprising an elongate member having a gap formed by portions of the member and into which gap a peeled off portion of the skin is inserted and a handle disposed to rotate the member about its axis so that, in use, the skin is gripped by the portions of the pipe and is moved around the circumference of the pipe to remove the entire layer.
Preferably one of the portions is a lug which is attached to the member and extends thereover to form the gap with a mainl portion.
Suitably the member comprises two portions which are attached to each other at one end and at the other end form the gap.
Conveniently the portions which are attached to each other are at right angles to the portions forming the gap whereby the portions which attached to each other form a handle.
Preferably manually grippable means is attached to the handle.
Suitably one of the portions forms a central portion and the other portion is attached to the surface of the central portion in such a way as to form the gap therewith, the handle being attached to one end of the member and being adapted tO be rotated in such a way as to rotate the central portion about its axis.
The advantage of this apparatus is that it removes the skin by pulling the skin is therefore more likely to be removed without breaking Embodiments of the invention will now be particularly described with reference to the drawings:-Figure 1 shows a first version of the apparatus from the side, Figure 2 shows the first version in elevation, * : Figure 3 shows the first version axially from one end, Figure 4 shows a second version of the apparatus from the side, Figure 5 shows the second version of the apparatus in elevation, Figure 6 shows the second version of the apparatus from one end, Figure 7 shows a third version of the apparatus from the side, Figure 8 shows the third version of the apparatus in elevation, Figure 9 shows the third version of the apparatus axially from one end, Figure 10 shows a fourth version of the apparatus from the side, Figure 11 shows the fourth version of the apparatus in elevation and Figure 12 shows the fourth version axially from one end.
Referring to Figures 1 to 3 the first version of the apparatus comprises an elongate cylindrical bar 1 to which is attached a lug 2 by means of a pin 3 which extends through an aperture in the end of the bar 1. The lug 2 has a flat body 4 which fits within a slot in the end of the bar 1 and through which body 4 the pin 3 extends to hold the lug 2 in place. The lug 2 has a portion 5 which in use overlies the bar 1 to form a gap 6 into which a peeled off portion (not shown) of the skin on the pipe (not shown) is inserted. At the other end of the bar 1 is a handle 7 (shown in outline) disposed at right angles to the bar 1 to rotate the bar 1 about its axis so that, in use, the peeled skin is gripped between the lug 2 and the bar 1 and is moved around the circumference of the pipe to remove the entire layer from the pipe. The handle 7 comprises a gripping member 8 extending outwardly from a spindle 9 which is secured to the bar 1 by means of a bush 9A. The gripping member 8 is rotatably mounted on the spindle 9 and when the peeled off portion has been inserted into the gap 6 the spindle 9 is rotated by the gripping member 8 so that the skin is peeled off as previously described.
Referring to Figures 4 to 6 the second version of the apparatus comprises a rigid metal bar 10 which has been bent into first and second sections 11 and 12 at right angles to each other. The first section 11 comprises two adjoining : portions 13 and 14 which are spaced from each other to form a gap 15 into * which a peeled off portion of the skin of the pipe is inserted. The portions 13 :.: . and 14 are joined to form a curved end 16 to the sections 11 and 12. The second section 12 comprises two adjoining and touching portions 17 and 18 * *. which form a handle adapted to rotate the first section 11 about its axis *:; whereby, in use the peeled skin is gripped between the portions 13 and 14 and * is moved around the circumference of the pipe to remove the entire layer from the pipe. The portions 17 and 18 have a gripping member 19 which is secured to the portions 17 and 18 as shown and provides means by which the handle may be gripped for rotation.
Referring to Figure 7 to 9 the third version of the apparatus comprises two portions 20 and 21 in which a central main portion 20 is cylindrical and a flat bar 21 is attached by spaced bolts 22 and 23 to the central portion 20. The main portion 20 has spaced raised mounts 24 on its surface to which the bar 21 can be attached to form a gap 25 with the portion 20. A handle 26 similar to that shown and described in Figures 1 to 3 is attached in a similar manner to the far end of the portion 20 at right angles thereto and the portion 20 can be rotated axially by rotation of the handle 26 whereby, in use, the peeled skin is gripped between the portions 20 and flat bar 21 and is moved around the circumference of the pipe to remove the entire layer from the pipe.
Referring to Figures 10 to 12 the fourth version of the apparatus is similar to the third version shown in Figures 7 to 9 except the central main portion 30 is rectangular. A flat bar 31 is attached by spaced bolts 32 and 33 to the central portion 30. As in Figures 7 to 9 the main portion 30 has spaced raise mounts 34 and 35 on its surface to which the bar 31 can be attached to form a gap 36 with the portion 30. A handle 37 similar to those handles 7 and 26 shown in the previous drawings is attached in a similar manner to the far end of the portion 30 at right angles thereto and the portion 30 can be rotated axially by rotation of the handle 37 whereby, in use, the peeled skin is gripped between the portion 30 and flat bar 21 and is moved around the circumference of the :h pipe to remove the entire layer from the pipe.

In all cases a portion of skin is peeled off first by pliers, grips or the fingers and threaded through the gap, then the apparatus is rotated axially so that the : * layer is peeled away from the pipe. **.*
