Abstract
A transmission system, for example for a vehicle. The transmission system includes first, second, third and fourth shafts (3, 4, 6, 1), wherein the second and third shafts (4, 6) are lay shafts; a first gear train (8) for transmitting drive between the first and second shafts (3, 1) including a first gear element (B) rotatably mounted on the first shaft (3) and a second gear element (C) mounted on the second shaft (4); a second gear train (10) for transmitting drive between the first and third shafts (3, 6) including a third gear element (A) rotatably mounted on the first shaft (3) and a fourth gear element (D) mounted on the third shaft (8); and a third gear train (12) for transmitting drive between the second and fourth shafts (4, 1) and/or the third and fourth shafts (6, 1). The transmission system also includes a first selector assembly (29) arranged to selectively lock each of the first and third gear elements (B, A) for rotation with the first shaft (3) from operational modes that include the following modes: lock the gear element (B, A) for rotation with the first shaft (3) in the clockwise and anti-clockwise directions; lock the gear element (B, A) for rotation with, the first shaft (3) in the clockwise direction and not lock in the anti-clockwise direction; and lock the gear element (B, A) for rotation with the first shaft (3) in the anti-clockwise direction and not lock in the clockwise direction; and damping means (200) for damping engagement of the first and third gear wheels (B, A) by the first selector assembly (29).
