Abstract

A lamp consists of at least two reflectors 51 and an attachment means for a light source, at least one reflector moves. Movement of the reflectors can create at least two different light settings. One of the settings allows light to be directed to the end of a reflective tube created by at least two of the reflectors, and one setting allows light to be emitted out of the side of said tube. The lamp can change between side lighting and uplighter mode. The moving reflectors may change the light settings by rotation, swivelling, sliding and may be formed by a rotating tube within a tube where holes align for side lighting or holes are hidden for up lighting. Versions of the lamp include desk lamps, floor lamps, wall lamps, ceiling lamps. The tube may have an end cap which is movable to allow light out of the end of the tube and may be formed by half moons, stair type, part orb, or petals.

Description

LAMP
This lamp device is linked to my previous applications GB1005080.5 (LIGHT) and GB 1015468.0 and is a priority application based on the previous applications. Some of the basic concept of a lamp is detailed in GB1005080.5, GB1015468.0 expanded on the basic concept. Also whereas the GB 1005080.5 application was based around a table GB 1015468.0 and this application are based around a lamp/lampshade. This application and GB 1015468.0 have a substantial amount in common.
A lamp is a device consisting of at least two reflector parts, and an attachment means for a light source, at least one reflector part moves relative to at least one of the other reflectors and generally also relative to the light source. Movement of the reflectors can create at least two different light settings. When a light source is fitted, one of the settings allows light to be emitted from at least one end of a reflective tube, and one setting allows light to be emitted out of the side or sides of the reflective tube. The reflective tube being fonned by at least two of the reflectors, at least one of which moves. Most variants of the lamp will change between side lighting and uplighter mode. Versions of lamp shall be available for use in many applications including; desk lamps, floor lamps, wall lights, ceiling lights, "light" lamps and other light sources.
Traditionally light fittings have a specific function e.g. spotlight, e.g. diffusing ceiling pendant, and therefore several light fittings are often present in any one room. This lamp aims to allow the user to combine two or more lighting functions in a single light fitting thus allowing a single bulb to be used for a variety of different lighting arrangements, so instead of needing a desk lamp, a ceiling light, and a wall light, a single tall floor lamp, or a single tall wall lamp may be switchable between floor level lighting, desk lamp height lighting, wall light height lighting and up-lighter shining onto and reflecting off ceiling lighting, and even partial lighting to all levels. In other instances the user may simply like to be able to adjust the light distribution to their own taste, a fixed shade does not always give the light distribution that a user desires.
In addition to the creation of a single versatile lamp, the energy efficiency (heat delivery) of the bulb is significantly increased if it is a "light" lamp, and where a floor, wall or desk lamp is used instead of a ceiling pendant, bulb heat delivery efficiency is slightly increased (ceiling pendants being further from the seated person than desk, wall, floor lamps).
A simple example of a lamp is a tube within a tube reflector tube, the tubes shall have holes or patches that are able to transmit light where appropriate, and by rotation or elongation of the tubes the user can create a substantially complete reflective tube whereby when fitted, light from a light source is transferred to the end of the tube, or the user can align the tube within a tube tubes so that light is allowed out of the side or sides of the tube through the holes/patches.
The tube need not have parallel sides, it may also be (at least in part) bulbous, conical or any other desired shape. The lamp may include at least one moveable/removable end cap that covers an end of the tube, and the end cap may be reflective in part or in whole, diffusing in part or in whole, partly clear. Light diffusers/lampshades may also be included to reduce/prevent dazzle. The lamp may also include at least one light cut-ofl7diverter slide/device to allow switching between different light emission points.
A lamp may be made up of several components, and each component shall now be described, with examples and drawings, after which examples will be given of lamp types.
Reflectors; at least two reflectors are present in each lamp, and all lamps include a substantially complete reflective tube made up of two or more of the reflectors, at least one of which moves. A reflector is defined as being wholly or partly reflective.
Tube within a tube reflector; two tubes that fit one within the other, and at least one of the tubes has at least one hole/patch in the side or sides, and at least one of the'tubes moves so as to create a tube with holes/patches that allow light out of the side of the tube. The tubes can also be aligned so that there are no holes/patches in the sides, and therefore they form a substantially complete reflective tube.
Tube and reflector; one reflective tube with one or more holes/patches and one or more reflectors that can be used to cover the holes/patches.
Several reflector; several reflectors that move to create a substantially complete tube, an example being several reflectors, each with its own pivot, typically arranged about a circumference, and rotation of the reflectors allows adjustment between open sided tube and substantially complete reflective tube. The swivelling reflectors may be connected (by detachable connections) to their two immediate neighbours so that they move as one, the connections may be elastic or sprung so that as the distance between the connections changes with the swivelling motion the elasticity ensures even spacing/rotation of the reflectors. Any other suitable method of connecting several pivoting reflectors together may be used (cogs, bands and the like). At least one means of fixing the position of the reflectors shall normally be included, this may simply be a nut threaded on the end of the pivot axle, screw tight to fix reflector in position. If they are connected together then they shall all open together, however if they are individual, or if they are connected in groups then they can be opened so that various different side lighting conditions can be achieved. For example rotate them so that they are all parallel, and the light will go more or less in two directions, open one for a slim side light, open all of one side in a radiating pattern for a wide side lighting, open all of one side, with the reflectors parallel, and you achieve a narrower directed side lighting etc. To avoid clashing/jamming in rotation the pivoting reflectors may have slightly rounded edges, or for one way opening the edges may lap or be angled (like the end of a chisel), the reflectors may even have a slight gap between the edges.
A lamp may be a clip on, hang on, slot in or magnetic framework supplied with a variety of reflectors so that a user may assemble their own lamp, and re-arrange the reflectors as and when they like, the reflectors themselves may be magnetic. Such a lamp may include stickers to attach to transparent reflector substitutes to decorate the lamp at for example Christmas time.
Figure 1 shows an example of a slot in lamp, the example framework 13 being octagonal in plan, and reflectors will simply slot into the framework, the framework being approximately C/H shaped in profile 11 so that the reflector slides 12 simply slot into the frame. So each of the eight sides are approximately U shaped, and the reflector slides slot in from the top to form a complete side. The bottom and top of the lamp may also have slot in reflectors, however when the lamp is a pendant lampshade the top reflector has to fit around the electricity supply cable, one of the simplest ways is for the top reflector to be constructed in two or more separate parts that slot in from the outer rim until they meet the electricity cable.
Figure 2 shows an example of a lamp where the reflectors are arranged in an oblong tube, and two opposite sides 21 are pivoted/hinged, where they are pivoted the pivot may be at approximately mid-span 22, and the light source attachment means 25 shall be somewhere in the central region of the tube, and thereby rotation of the pivoting sides shall create a v shaped uplighter 23, a v shaped down-lighter, a tube up and down lighter, and if the pivoting reflectors are pivoted in the same direction the light may be angled off to the side. The non pivoting sides may extend beyond the pivoting sides so that in the reflectors have a H type profile, the cross piece being a spaced double line (the two pivoting sides). Figure 2 shows a more aesthetically pleasing model with non-pivoting sides that are rounded 24 (roughly following the arc of the pivoting reflectors). Such a lamp can be sold flat packed for bolting/screwing/clipping together self-assembly. It should be noted that angling the pivoting reflectors into a v-form ation reduces the overall length of the tube thus created, thereby effectively creating a hole in the side of the tube (in accordance with claim 1).
Stair reflector; see page 5 of description.
Light cut-off7modifying slides; for intersecting the light being transmitted along the tube to prevent the light passing beyond, or where the slides are at least partly light-transmitting to modify the light conditions. The slides may be flat or shaped, coloured/tinted, reflective or partly clear, removable or integrated into the tube.
Slot in slides; slides that slot into the tube.
Pivoting; the slide attaches inside the tube with a pivot, the slide can be rotated so that it lies parallel to the general light flow, allowing light to pass along the tube or rotate to the closed position to block/modify the light. An operating mechanism for such may be simply a knob on the end of the pivot axle, or any other suitable mechanism.
Such a slide may be weighted so that it hangs vertically.
Hinged; hinged at one end to a side of the tube, the slide may sit parallel to the side of the tube allowing light to pass along the tube, or the free end can be moved out to intersect the light. In the parallel position the slide may cover a hole/patch in the side of the tube, thus allowing automatic switching between side lighting and tube-end mode. Lots of simple operating mechanisms can be used to move the slide, that may include a combination of screws, strings, sliders, rods, levers etc (trivial to the invention).
L shaped; An automatic switching slide with a section that intersects the light flowing along the tube, and a section that is parallel to a side of the tube. Typically the L/inverted L can be adjusted between protruding out of the side of the tube and being pushed into the tube, in the protruding position light passes along the tube, push the slide in and the light flow will be intersected by one leg of the L, and the other leg of the L will have moved across to the other side of the tube, exposing a hole/patch in the side of the tube, hence automatic switch-over between tube-end mode and side lighting. The slide may include additional legs to support what may otherwise be a cantilevered slide so the slide could be C shaped or T shaped, the additional leg being largely transparent, or low profile rodlrods. An example explanation: T, the top of the T would protrude from one side of the tube or the other (push one side in and the other side comes out).
If the tube is of a shape that is not fully compatible with the slides then additional pieces may be added to the inside of the tube to ensure the whole tube cross-sectional area is intersected. The internal pieces may be shaped to minimise reflection of light back towards the light source. Runners may be included on the inside of the tube to support the slide.
End caps; caps that can be positioned over the end of the tube may be included, the caps shall modify, deflect, or cut off the light.
Removable end cap; a cap that covers at least part of the end of the tube, and is easily removed.
Spaced end cap; an end cap that is positioned with a gap between it and the tube so that at least some of the light may be deflected back towards the tube, but outside the tube. Such an end cap may be light diffusing or fully reflective. An example of this type is a part-orb end cap, the part-orb can deflect andlor diffuse light from the tube, and may also move or open so that light can continue on the path given by the tube. A spaced end cap may have a section that opens to allow light to pass. A spaced end cap may rotate about a pivot point so that it is outwith the path of the light coming from the tube. A spaced end cap may split into two or more parts about a pivot point to allow light to pass. A spaced end cap may open like the petals of a flower etc. etc. A spaced end cap may rotate about a pivot so that light can be directed to the side. A spaced end cap may rotate so that lighting direction can be rotated. A spaced end cap may be fixed and lob-sided in relation to the tube, but on such a model the tube/lamp may rotate to allow adjustment of the light direction.
Flexible end cap; an end cap that is a flexible reflective tube, so that light can be directed in various directions.
Whatever the type, an end cap may be more than one piece either to allow a variety of spotlight shapes or as part of a more aesthetically pleasing opening mechanism, or simply as a means of creating an opening mechanism.
Opening end cap; an end cap that automatically opens when the lamp reflectors are adjusted, for example a tube within a tube lamp that adjusts between side lighting and tube-end lighting by elongation, and the end cap is one or more hinged parts that open like the petals of a flower, the inner tube extends beyond the end of the outer tube in the contracted position. So when the tube is elongated the end cap can be closed to prevent light escaping from the end of the tube, however when the tube is contracted the inner tube automatically pushes open the end cap. It is possible to automate closing of the end cap, and I give the following example of a closing mechanism, the inner tube top part that extends beyond the end of the outer tube shall be narrower than the outer tube, but it shall widen at the top, the petallpetals shall extend beyond the hinge. When contracted the petals open, when the tubes are elongated the widening at the top of the inner tube shall engage with each petal where it extends beyond the hinge and flip the end cap closed. If more than one petal is present they will most likely need to be layered (like the treads of a stair) so that they close in a slightly staggered sequence and do not clash with each other. It is also possible to have petals that are a tight edge to edge fit.
Rotate open end cap; an end cap that by rotation of the reflectors the end cap automatically adjusts between allowing light out of the end of the tube and not. An example being a tube within a tube lamp, each tube having a half moon reflector attached to the end so that when the tubes are rotated either no light passes or a half moon uplighter effect is created. This can easily be adapted so that three lighting arrangements can be achieved, one tube shall have two-thirds of the end cap, the other tube shall have the other third, thereby by rotation the lighting can be a big slice of cake uplighter effect, side lighting only, or both (tube holes/patches being arranged to correspond with the end cap). End caps may include reflector pieces that smooth the transition between perpendicular end cap and tube sides, so that light is not unnecessarily reflected back towards the light source. In certain instances the sides of one of the tubes may be squashed to create a half moon or other shape at the end.
Pivoting end cap; when the reflectors are pivoting reflector type the end cap may be attached to one or more of the reflectors so that as the reflectors rotate the end cap opens or closes.
Spring loaded end cap; operated by elongation of the tube, a spring loaded hinge holds the end cap closed, but when the outer tube is elongated the outer tube levers the end cap open (end cap extends beyond the wall of the inner tube into the path of the outer tube).
Stair end cap; an end cap made up of pieces that form a stair type arrangement, in a spiral stair arrangement the treads shall rotate about a central pivot point, in the open position the treads will align in a vertical stack, in the closed position the treads open into a spiral stair arrangement intersecting the light. Each tread may typically have ridges along the edges that cause the treads to operate as described. Such spiral stair end caps may be arranged in two or more flights so that the end cap can be opened to a propeller type arrangement i.e. two flights would resemble a bow-tie, three flights a three blade propeller etc. The flights may be individually rotatable or they may be connected so that all flights openlclose simultaneously, a variant may allow switching between individual and simultaneous operation. The spiral end cap may be connected to one or more reflectors so that rotation of the end cap treads also rotates the reflectors and thereby automatic switchover between side lighting and tube-end lighting is achieved. On some models disengaging the connection may be possible to allow independent operation of the parts. A straight flight of stair type arrangement can be used for oblong end caps, and in this situation the tread movement may be connected to tube side reflectors that slide with the treads so that closing the cap opens the tube sides.
The sides of a tube reflector may be constructed of tread type reflectors that operate in a similar manner to the stair end caps.
An end cap may be an integral part of the sides of a reflector tube, as such the sides of the reflective tube shall contain hinged sections that can be moved inwards to create a tapered cone end cap within the tube to reflect the light in a spotlight effect. The hinged parts are most likely to be approximately triangular in shape so that they form a perfect cone. Examples of how such hinged parts can be held in the cone shape include; magnetism, either the hinged parts are magnetic so that when pushed into a cone shape they stick together, or a magnet is centrally mounted, on a framework that does not clash with the hinged parts, and the hinged parts are ferrous; A string attached to each of the hinged parts inside the tube to be pulled to move the triangles inwards, these may converge at a central point/pulley so that all the hinged parts can be moved inwards at the same time by pulling on the group of strings. Stiff hinges that hold the position to which the hinged parts are pushed etc. Shades; The lamp may include at least one lampshade/dazzle reduction device.
The lamp shall now be described by the use of some example types: Figure 3 an example of a tube within a tube reflector lamp.
Figure 4 an example of a mushroom lamp with tube stem and part-orb top Figure 5 an example of a multi pivoting reflector tube lamp.
Figure 6 an example of a multi level floor lamp.
Figure 7 an example of a multi level wall lamp Figure 8 an example of a ceiling lamp.
Figure 1 slot in reflector lamp (see reflector description, bottom page 2).
Figure 2 oblong with two pivoted sides lamp (see reflector description, top page 3).
Figure 3 shows an example tube within a tube reflector lamp, by elongation of the outer tube 31 holes/patches are exposed in the sides of the tube giving side lighting.
The action of elongation automatically closes the hinged end cap, and the hinged end cap 32 automatically opens when the tubes are returned to fully contracted.
Figure 4 shows an example mushroom lamp, and in this example one reflector is the stem 41 and is a complete reflective tube, the second (and third) reflector is a part-orb 42, and the orb splits in two about a pivot point 43, the pivot point also allows the part-orb to be tilted so that light can be directed to the side. A light source is located near the bottom of the lamp and light is directed up the tube to be re-directed back down and to the sides by the part orb, or when the part orb is split in two, forming a partial extension of the tube, the light can continue on its upward journey.
Figure 5 shows an example multiple pivoting reflector tube lamp made up of several reflectors each reflector 51 having its own pivot 52, and each pivot being arranged around a circumference. Each reflector is shown connected to its nearest two neighbours by springy connecting pieces 53 that ensure the reflectors open and close in unison, the connecting pieces may be detached to allow independent operation of the reflectors. As shown the reflectors are held in position by a tightening screw 54 on the end of the pivot axle. Although not shown on the drawing, the example shown would include an end cap that is in several pieces, each piece being attached to the top of a reflector so that when the reflectors are closed the end cap is open and visa versa.
The end cap pieces may also swivel so that they can be operated independently of the reflectors allowing varied partial uplighting and partial side lighting at the same time.
The end cap pieces are stepped so that they overlap, and therefore rotate without clashing.
Figure 6 shows an example multi-level floor lamp, at the bottom middle and top there are sections that are tube within a tube reflector covered by a shade 61, rotation of the shade shall rotate the outer tube and change the tube within a tube from substantially complete reflective tube to a tube with light emitting holes/patches in the sides.
Between the shades are sections of tubing 62 to transfer the light between shades, and also between the shades there are pivoting light cut off slides 63 that operate independently. At the top of the lamp is a removable end cap 64 that can be replaced with light modifying end caps. Thereby a user can choose between many lighting conditions, examples: bottom shade only, top shade only, top and middle shades, uplighter only, uplighter and top shade etc. Figure 7 shows an example multi-level wall lamp, the tubing 71 is oblong, the lower light point 72 as shown directs light downwards in a desk lamp type lighting arrangement, thereby if a desk is located below the wall lamp the desk can be lit by the wall lamp. The lower light point is operated by an L-shaped light cut off slide 73, pull the slide out for uplighter mode. Tubing connects between the lower light point and the upper light point, as shown the upper light point is simply a diffusing shade 74.
Figure 8 shows a ceiling lamp, in this example the two reflectors are tube within a tube conical tubes 81 operated by rotation so that lighting can be switched between uplighter effect and side lighting with some uplighter effect. Tassels may be attached to the reflectors, which hang down below the lamp, so that if the ceiling is high the reflectors can still be moved without need for a stepladder.
Other examples include rotating barrel and U-tube lamps. Rotating barrel is like a tombola, the light source being located within the barrel and attached to the axle about which the barrel rotates, the ends and or the sides of the barrel shall be double skinned. The sides for example shall have alternating (equally spaced) light emitting patches and reflective sections for one skin, the other skin shall have alternating patches, but with an additional patch in-between two of the patches. The sides shall be tube within atube so that rotation of the outer skin gives either a single patch through which light can shine, or there shall be alternating light patches all around the circumference of the barrel. The end skins may also be alternating segments of reflective and light patches to give a substantially complete reflector or alternating segments of light. When only one or two light emitting holes/patches are in a side of the barrel the holes/patches may be regarded as the ends of the barrel, and the ends of the barrel regarded as the sides. U-tube, generally for wall mounting and typically being a U-shaped tube with a light source located at approximately mid-point of the tube. The two vertical sections of the U shall swivel about the horizontal section so that the ends can be rotated between uplighter and down-lighter (independently). The central horizontal section shall be adaptable from fully reflective tube (directing light to the ends) to a diffusing light by any suitable means.
This lamp application was based upon the basic concept touched upon in my "light" application, and I shall now add to this description by expanding on the "light" lamp.
In my "light" application I described tube within a tube reflector tube and mushroom lamp, and the above tabletop level parts were described as removable. For this application I also state that the above and below tabletop parts may be connected, and also that the above tabletop parts may retract into the table. Where the above tabletop part retracts into the table the retraction process may automatically switch between above and below tabletop lighting (tube within a tube). When above tabletop lighting is required the lamp can be extended from within the table, and the below tabletop tubes will align to create a substantially complete reflective tube below tabletop level.
Above the tabletop the extended tube may include a secondary tube within a tube to allow adjustment of side lighting, a moveable end cap etc. The above and below tabletop parts may include a rotation mechanism that allows independent rotation of the above tabletop parts or when the mechanism is engaged the below table top tube will rotate with the above tabletop parts, the simplest means of achieving such is by adding a catch to both the upper and lower rotating tubes so that the tubes can be rotated upto nearly 360 degrees independently but beyond that the catches engage, allowing rotational adjustment of the below tabletop tubing from above tabletop. In such an instance an extra C-shaped reflector or other such may be required below tabletop to create a substantially complete reflective tube/side emitting tube.
For clarification purposes I state that an attachment means for a light source includes removable (two or more reflector) lamps/lampshades that attach by an attachment means to a "light". An attachment means for a light source also includes (two or more reflector) lamps that are removable from any base unit or lamp base that includes a light source over which the lamp is designed to fit by the attachment means. Also where a removable lampshade is sold as part of a complete lamp e.g. a "light" lamp, then the removable lampshade itself does not have to have the minimum two reflectors, it can be a single reflector, as long as the rest of the lamp includes a reflector so that the complete lamp complies with claim 1. A base unit is defined as being any item of furniture, such as a bedside cabinet or table. A light source may be located completely within a lamp, partly within a lamp, or completely outwith a lamp.
For clarification purposes end caps and slides may be regarded as reflectors.
Components of the lamp may be motorised to create flashing light effects, or to allow remote controlled adjustment of the lighting conditions.
Where tubing connects between different levels of a lamp the tubing may be at least double layer and extendible so that the overall height of the lamp can be adjusted.
The above are but examples of the types of components, and but examples of the combinations of the different components and types of lighting offered by the lamp concept, many other variants are possible and are deemed covered by the scope of this application.
