Abstract
The foam pad is a double-sided adhesive pad made from foamed rubber with a fibre or plastic reinforcing layer preferably applied to the back thereof. It may be used in connection with a spacer or paving support pad which is in use positioned underneath the corners of adjacent floor tiles. The spacer preferably also has elongate ribs which locate the tiles in position. The adhesive pad is provided with apertures which allow it to be positioned around the ribs on the top of the spacer. The adhesive pad used in conjunction with the spacer, secures the tiles in position without gluing the tiles directly to the substrate. In use the pads are used to tie together lightweight slabs when used on flat roofs, balconies, patios and other surfaces internal and external which are to be exposed to pedestrian traffic.
Description
Description
The self adhesive Link Pad is to be used on flat roofs, balconies, patios and other surfaces internal and external which are exposed to pedestrian traffic and require a suitable walking surface such as concrete slabs or Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete Promenade Tiles or Slabs or other hard surfaces.
The Pads would be used in circumstances where the tiles or slabs etc cannot be fixed directly to the substrate but need to be loose laid for many reasons such as future removal, to prevent adhesives coming into contact with the substrate, access to plant, electric cabling or any other reason preventing fixing. When tile or slabs etc are loose laid in these circumstances there is a risk that they may be disturbed by wind or by traffic. This could cause movement to the tiles until they could pose a risk of falling, causing damage or accident. When tiles/slabs are loose laid they are either laid directly onto the substrate or are supported in an elevated position by Paving Support Pads or similar support system. In these cases the tiles are not connected to each other by any means and are therefore able to move individually if subjected to any external force such as wind or foot movement. In some cases the self weight of the tile/slab is sufficient to prevent movement but in the case of lighter weight products there is a need to increase the stability of the tile/slab. The Self Adhesive Attachment Pad would be used in these circumstances. The Link Pad top piece Fig 5 can be circular, square, rectangular or any other shape and is made from foam rubber 2, 3 or 4mm thick.
It has adhesive on the top with a separating film on the adhesive to prevent accidental fixing. It is reinforced with a plastic or fibre reinforcing bottom layer Fig 6 fixed with adhesive to the underside of the foam rubber top piece. This increases the tensile strength and tear resistance of the pads and therefore increases the attachment resistance when fitted to Tiles/Slabs. Circular pads would be approximately 160mm in diameter, and, if square or rectangular would be 160 x 160 or similar area.
Larger sizes can be used to increase the attachment loads. The pre-assembled pad is fixed to the underside of tiles/slabs where the corners of four tiles/slabs coincide as seen on the drawing Fig 1, 2 & 3. This connects the tiles/slabs together increasing the resistance of any one slab to horizontal or vertical movement as the connected slabs will act as one under the influence of the imposed force.
The slabs/Tiles can still be separated and lifted at a later date if necessary with the replacement of the Attachment Pads being the only additional operation when relaying. Tiles/slabs can be laid directly onto substrate on top of the pads. This method elevates the Tiles/Slabs above the substrate by the thickness of the pad. Alternatively they can be laid onto Paving Support Pads Fig 7 which are widely available in rubber or plastic, and in this condition the pads would have slots or slits formed Fig 4 & 9 to allow them to fit over the spacing lugs normally integrated into the Paving Support Pads. With this method, the need for adhesives to come into contact with the substrate is avoided completely and a clear drainage space is formed under the Slab.
