Abstract

A draught excluder for a sash window 10, the draught excluder comprising a cover member 32 for securing over a sash cord pulley in an opening in a side jamb of the window, the cover member 32 having an opening 36 which is closed by a removable closure member 42, and the removable closure member having an aperture 48 for the passage of the sash cord 24 from the pulley to a counterweight. Preferably the closure member 42 is in at least two parts (Fig 5) to allow it to be fastened around the cord 24 and it is slid into position on guide rails 44. The draught excluder may be fastened to the sash via screws in screw holes 40 in a flange 38.

Description

A Draught Excluder for a Sash Window
Field of the invention
This invention relates to a draught excluder for a sash window.
Background of the invention
Figure 1 shows a typical sash window. Such windows are well known and therefore only those parts relevant to the present invention will be described.
The sash window has a pair of substantially vertical parallel side jambs 10 with upper and lower sashes 12, 14 mounted for substantially vertical sliding movement between the inside surfaces of the jarnbs. Two pulleys 16, 18 are set side-by-side into respective openings 20, 22 at the upper end of each side jamb 10 (only the pulley 16 is seen on the left) . The pulleys 16 are in vertical alignment respectively with opposite top corners of the lower sash 14 and the pulleys 18 are in vertical alignment respectively with opposite top corners of the upper sash 12. A respective sash cord 24 passes from each top corner of the lower sash 14 via a respective pulley 16 to a respective counterweight 28 on the outside of the side jamb 10, and a respective sash cord 26 passes from each top corner of the upper sash 12 via a respective pulley 18 to a respective counterweight 28, 30 on the outside of the side jamb 10.
A draught excluder is known for fitting over a pulley 16 or 18 and its respective opening 20 or 22, four such excluders normally being used for a window of the type shown in Figure 1, one for each pulley. However, the known excluders do not efficiently reduce draughts through the openings 20, 22. Also, they are fitted on the inside surface of the side jambs 10 where they tend to limit the movement of the sashes.
Summary of the invention
According to the present invention there is provided a draught excluder for a sash window, the draught excluder comprising a cover member for securing over a sash cord pulley set into an opening in a side jamb of the window, the cover member having an opening which is closed by a removable closure member, and the removable closure member having an aperture for the passage of the sash cord from the pulley to a counterweight.
Preferably the closure member is formed in at least two parts which can be assembled around the sash cord.
In an embodiment the closure member is inserted into the cover member to close the opening by sliding between guide means formed on the inside of the cover member.
The cover member may comprise a trough-like member for securing top down over the sash cord pulley, the trough-like member having an open end closed by the removable closure member.
The draught excluder may include a laterally extending flange surrounding the cover member for securing the cover member to the side jamb, the surface of the flange which in use faces the side jamb and an exposed edge of the closure member level with said flange surface defining a continuous channel for accommodating a closed-loop seal.
The invention also provides a sash window having a substantially vertical side jamb, a sash mounted for substantially vertical sliding movement on the inside of the side jamb, a pulley set into an opening in the side jamb, a sash cord passing from the sash via the pulley to a counterweight on the outside of the side jamb, and a draught excluder as specified above secured to the outside of the side jamb and covering the pulley and opening, the sash cord passing though the aperture in the closure member.
Brief description of the drawings
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1, previously described, shows a sash window of the type to which the present invention may be applied.
Figure 2 is a perspective view, seen from below, of a draught excluder according to an embodiment of the invention fitted over one of the pulleys of the window of Figure 1 (the adjacent pulley is not shown fitted with an excluder for comparison -in practice all four pulleys Figures 3 and 4 are perspective top and bottom views respectively of a trough-like member forming part of the excluder of Figure 2.
Figures 5 and 6 are dissembled and assembled perspective views respectively of a removable endwall forming part of the excluder of Figure 2.
Figures 7 and 8 are perspective views of the endwall being fitted to the trough-like member.
Detailed description of the drawings
Referring to Figures 2 to 8, the draught excluder comprises an elongated trough-like cover member 32 (hereinafter simply referred to as a trough) having an open top 34 and one open end 36. A laterally extending flange 38 surrounds the open top 34 of the trough 32.
This allows the trough to be secured top down to the outside surface of the side jamb 10 so as to cover the sash cord pulley 16 and opening 20, Figure 2. The flange 38 is screwed tightly onto the jamb 10 by screws (not shown) which pass through screw holes 40.
The open end 36 of the trough 32 is closed in use by a removable closure member in the form of an endwall 42 having a central aperture 48 to allow passage of the sash cord 24 from the pulley 16 to the counterweight 28. The endwall 42 is formed in two parts 42A, 42B which can be assembled around the sash cord. This avoids the need to remove the counterweight 28 when fitting the draught excluder.
The endwall 42 is substantially rectangular and is inserted into the trough 32 to close the open end 34 by sliding it in a direction transverse the longitudinal axis of the trough between guide rails 44 formed on the internal sidewalls of the trough.
The top surface of the flange 38 and the exposed edge 46 of the endwall 42 which is level therewith (Figures 7 and 8) define a continuous channel 46 for accommodating a closed-loop seal (not shown) which is sandwiched between the flange 38 and the jamb 10 in use.
It will be noted that the draught excluder is fitted to the outside surface of the side jamb 10, to avoid restricting the range of movement of the sash 14.
The trough 32 and endwall 42 may be moulded from plastics material.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment described herein which may be modified or varied without departing from the scope of the invention.
