Abstract

A combined duct/pipe flange and support channel for either supporting the duct/pipe its self and/or attaching and/or supporting other items (e.g. Other ducts, piped or electrical services, plant items, devises such as fire/smoke detectors and/or lighting). The duct/pipe flange can be attached to duct/pipe in a common fashion using tried and tested techniques and compatible with standard fixtures and fittings. Likewise the support flange can be supported using standard fixtures and fittings using common techniques.

Description

DescriDtion Support Flange This invention relates to a method of joining ducts and pipes together and supporting them.
When joining ducts or pipes together it is common practice to attach a flange to the duct or pipe. A flange allows them to be joined together in a easy manner and can also create an air or water tight seal around the flange's.
However a flange is usually only used of providing a means of connecting duct and pipes together and creating and maintaining an air or water tight seal. The flange is usually a separate item from the duct or pipe and has to be fitted. Once a flange has been fitted to ducts or pipes of similar sizes they can be joined together. Then to support or suspend the joined ducts or pipes additional supports are added along the length of the duct or pipe run. There may also be additional ducts, pipes, conduits, trucking, etc grouped together and surrounding each other. This leads to additional supports being required for each run which can easily congest an area and take up valuable space. These additional supports usually lead to additional costs and increased fitting times.
To overcome these problems, the present invention proposes a flange with the capability of being used also as a support. The support element on the flange can be used for supporting the duct or pipe it's self and/or also support additional runs or other items from it. This combined flange and support will reduce the requirements of additional supports. The support element on the flange should be compatible with standard fixtures and fittings.
The support flange combines a flange and support channel reducing the requirement for individual flanges and supports.
Preferably, the support aspect may take the form/profile of commonly used support channel.
Although the support means may also be provided by other means, such as a single return edge.
Preferably, the flange aspect can be compatible and used with other standard and commonly used flange types.
The support flange will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: * Figure 1 shows in profile a support flange to fit duct by means of a single sheet to create the form of the support flange.
* Figure 2 shows in profile a support flange as per figure 1 fitted to duct in a typical application manner.
* Figure 3 shows in profile a support flange fitted to duct as per figure 2 complete with a typical support assembly fitted to the support flange.
* Figure 4 shows in profile an alternative support flange which can be fitted to duct or pipe with the aide of a fitting channel.
* Figure 5 shows in profile an alternative support flange which can be fitted to duct or pipe with the aide of a fitting channel and has a single turned over edge to create a support channel and support load point.
* Figure 6 shows in profile an alternative support flange which can be fitted to duct or pipe with solvent, chemical, welders or brazed fixing.
* Figure 7 shows in profile an alternative support flange which can be fitted to duct or pipe with solvent, chemical, welders or brazed fixing and has a single turned over edge to create a support channel and support load point.
* Figure 8 shows a duct fitted with a support flange with an assortment for elements attached to it on the side and bottom while being its self being support the top support flange.
* Figure 9 shows a pipe fitted with a support flange with an assortment for elements attached to it on the side and bottom while being its self being support the top support flange.
* Figure 10 illustrates the application of the support flange in a proposed manner. Shows an assembly of two ducts fitted the support flange and used to support the duct from above and with an assortment for elements attached to one side and the bottom of the duct * Figure 11 show in detail the connection of the two ducts in figure 10.
Figure 1 shows in profile a support channel ideally situated for ventilation ducts and can use standard fittings and fixtures for duct flanges and support channels. In a traditional manner the support flange can be formed from a single sheet, the sheet could be made from steel, aluminium, plastic, etc. The form comprises of a fitting channel (5) which is for easy fitting to a sheet material and assists in creating a air tight seal between the flange and duct. a flat vertical edge (2) to form an airtight seal with another adjacent flange, an integrated support channel (3) similar and compatible with standard available support channels and fittings.
The support channel (3) in figure 1 has two loading points (4) which will be the primary load bearing points for supporting the duct its self or for suspending other items from the duct.
Figure 1 also has an integrated channel (7) for inserting standard flange corner peaces to form a square/rectangle continues flange, which can be fitted to square/rectangle duct.
Figure 2 shows in profile a duct support flange as illustrated in figure 1 fitted on the a section of duct (1) and fixed together using either spot or seam welds, rivets or crimped (6).
Figure 3 shows in profile a duct fitted with the support flange as illustrated in figure 2 it is all so showing a standard support assembly comprising of a stud/threaded bar (9), a nut (10), a square plate washer (11) and a support channel nut (12). The support assembly I securely fastened to the support flange by tightening the nut (12) clockwise which tightens in a vice like manner the plate washer (11) against the channel nut (12). The stud/threaded bar (9) can/will be in some instances replace with a standard bolt.
Figure 4 shows in profile an alternative form to that shown in figure 1 it still has the same characteristics as figure 1. A support channel (3), fitting channel (5) and a vertical flat edge to create an air or water tight seal. In addition, can be fixed similar using either spot or seam welds, rivets or crimped (6).
Figure 5 shows in profile an alternative support flange with the support channel (8) formed by bending back an extended part of the flange used for creating the air / water tight seal (2). Standard fittings and fixtures would be difficult to use with this flange. The flange still has a fitting channel (5) and can be fixed similar using either spot or seam welds, rivets or crimped (6).
Figure 6 shows in profile a support flange that is more likely fitted to a pipe it does not have a fitting channel (5) as illustrated in figure 1. This type of flange is usually fixed to the pipe (1) by using a continues weld or bold (6) this bond also creates the air/water tight seal between the flange and pipe/duct. It is still also possible to fix the support flange as described in figure 2 using either spot or seam welds, rivets or crimped (6).
Figure 7 shows in profile a support flange usually fixed (6) to pipe as illustrated in figure 6 and its support channel (8) is formed in a similar manner as described in figure 5.
Figure 8 illustrates an assembled support flange fitted to duct as shown in figure 3. There are four support flanges (15) fixed together using a standard type corner peace (14). The assembled flange is fitted to the duct (1) and is put into place with the aide of the support flange fitting channel (5). The support flange will then have a flat surface around the circumference of the duct to create an air tight seal (2).
Once assembled and fitted to the duct the support flange can be used to support its self using an assembly (13) as illustrated in figure 3. And other items may be attached to the support flange such as pipe/conduit (16) using a standard type pipe/conduit clip (19), cable tray/trucking/ladder (17) and or circular duct/large pipe these are a few examples of what can be fitted to the support flange.
Figure 9 illustrates an support flange similar to that illustrated in figure 6 fitted to a pipe (1) the pipe is supported from above using a standard support assembly (13) as previously described in figure 2.
There is also shown two smaller pipes or conduits (16) attached to the support flange (22) with standard clips (19).
Figure 10 illustrates a full assembly of two duct (1) fitted together in a typical manner. The ducts (1) or supported from above using a standard support assembly (13) as previously described in figure 2.
As the support flange is compatible with standard commonly used flange types they can be used with each other as illustrated. Each duct length (1) has one support flange (15) at one end and a standard type flange (20) on the other. The two ducts are bolted joined together through the standard corner peace (14). Figure 11 shows in detail the joint between the two ducts and the two different duct flanges (15) (20). Also illustrated is how the support flange can be used to attach/support other runs, items and equipment. Pipework or conduits (17) can be directly attached using standard off the shelf clips/brackets (19). And cable trays, trucking or ladders (17) can be bolted directly onto the support flange (15) using standard off the shelf bolts (9) and support channel nuts (12) as illustrated in figure 3.
