Abstract
The hinge has first and second hinge leafs 10, 11. One hinge leaf 10 includes a locking member such as protruding hook 26 that, when the door is closed into the frame, co-operates with a receiving member on the frame, such as hook 31, when a force is applied to the door 32 to resist forced opening. The locking member is integral with the hinge leaf and the receiving locking member may be a separate item. The hinge plates may be bent to accommodate profiled frames and one hinge leaf may include a projecting portion 24 for seating within a Eurogroove profile. Hinge leaf 10 may include profiled portion 15 to overlap around an edge of the door.
Description
HINGES
The invention relates to hinges and to closures, such as doors, incorporating such hinges.
There are a number of forms of closure where a leaf is pivotally mounted on a frame by one or more hinges to allow the leaf to be closed into and opened out of the frame. Doors and windows are examples of such closures.
When the leaf is closed into the frame, an edge of the leaf opposite the hinge or hinges can be locked securely to the frame to resist forced opening of the leaf at that edge. Even so locked, the leaf can be forced out of the frame by a force applied on the hinge side of the leaf that moves the leaf relative to the frame in a direction normal to the plane of the leaf. This loads and can break the hinge or hinges.
It is known to resist such forced opening by the use of a dog bolt that includes a bolt connected to the leaf on the hinge side and a receiver for the bolt formed on the frame. When the leaf is closed into the frame, the bolt is received in the receiver and resists such forced opening.
It is a disadvantage of such an arrangement that it requires the separate fitting to the door of the two dog bolt parts.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a hinge for connecting a leaf to a frame comprising a first flag for connection to the leaf and a second flag for connection to the frame, the first and second flags being pivotally inter-connected, to allow the leaf to be closed into and opened out of the frame, the first flag including a locking member for co-operation with a member on the frame to resist movement of the leaf relative to the frame in a direction normal to the plane of the leaf when the leaf is closed into the frame.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a closure comprising a leaf and a frame, the leaf being pivotally connected to the frame by a hinge according to the first aspect of the invention to allow the leaf to be closed into and opened out of the frame.
The following is a more detailed description of an embodiment of the invention, by way of example, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which:-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hinge with a first flag partially rotated and a receiver for co-operatic with a frame member, and Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the hinge and receiver of Figure 1 mounted between a door leaf and a door frame, with the leaf closed into the frame.
Referring first to Figure 1, the hinge comprises a first flag 10 and a second flag 11 inter-connected by a pivot pin 12.
The first flag 10 includes a cylindrical bush 13 for receiving the pivot pin 12 and carrying a generally radially projecting flange 14. The flange 14 is, in turn, connected to an inner flag portion 15, a central flag portion 16 and an outer flag portion 17. The inner flag portion 15 has a mounting surface 17 that is planar in a plane generally normal to the plane of the flange 14. The opposite surface of the inner flag 15 is provided with a generally triangular cross-section nose 19 that projects over the central flag portion 16 and is connected to the central flag portion 16 by an outer surface 20 of the inner flag portion 15 that is parallel to the mounting surface 18. This provides a profile that matches the profile of a door leaf that the flag 10 is designed to fit, as described below.
The central flag portion 16 projects from the inner flag portion 15 and lies in a plane normal to the plane of the mounting surface 18.
The outer flag outer flag portion 17 depends from the central flag portion 16 and lies in a plane generally parallel to the plane of the inner flag portion 16 and thus normal to the plane of the central flag portion 16. The outer flag portion 17 has an outer surface 21 formed with a shallow elongate channel 22 and an inner surface formed with an elongate projection 24. The channel 22 and the projection 24 extend parallel to the axis of the pivot pin 12. As seen in Figure 1, fixing holes 25 extend from the base of the channel 22 through the projection.
The outer face 21 of the outer flag portion 17 is formed with an elongate projecting hook 26 extending parallel to the channel 22 and the projection 24, and thus parallel to the axis of the pivot pin 12. The projecting hook 26 is hooked towards the central flag portion 16 for a purpose to be described below.
The second flag 11 comprises of base 60 carrying a pair of spaced trunnions 61, 62.
The pivot pin 12 is carried in the trunnions 61, 62 and the spacing of the trunnions 61, 62 is generally equal to the length of the cylindrical bush 13 so that the bush 13 fits between the trunnions 61, 62 to allow the first flag 10 to pivot relative to the second flag 11 about the axis of the pivot pin 12. The base 60 is provided with mounting means in the form of fixing holes 62.
A receiver 27 is formed as a generally elongate strip of metal provided along one edge with a U-shaped channel 28 and along the other edge with an L-shaped rebate 29. Fixing holes 30 extend through the receiver 29. In addition, the receiver 29 includes a projecting receiver hook 31 whose function will be described below. The profile of the receiver 27 is designed to match the profile of the associated frame, as described in more detail below.
The hinge and the receiver 27 described above with reference to the drawings are for use in mounting a door leaf 32 on a door frame 33. These are seen in Figure 2.
The door leaf 32 includes an extruded sash member 34 formed with a first face surface 35, a parallel second face surface 36 interconnected by an inner edge surface 37 and a generally parallel outer edge surface 38. The first face surface 35 projects beyond the outer edge surface 38 to form a flange 40 with a groove 41 for carrying a pile weatherstrip. The leading edge of the flange 40 has an angled surface 42 leading to an end surface lying in a plane generally parallel to the plane of the outer edge surface 38.
A similar flange 44 is formed at the other end of the first face surface 35 and overlies the inner edge surface 37.
The outer edge surface 38 is formed with a Eurogroove. Such a Eurogroove is well known and will not be described in any further detail.
The door frame 33 is also an extruded section. As seen in Figure 2, the section has an outer surface 46, an inner surface 47 interconnected by an outer edge surface 48 and an inner edge surface 49. The inner surface 47 projects over the inner edge surface 49 to form a flange 50 similar to the flanges 40, 44 on the sash member 34 and for carlying pile weatherstrip.
The hinge and the receiver 27 are mounted on the door frame 33 and the sash member 34 in the following way.
The second flag 11 is connected to the outer surface 46 of the door frame 33 by screws passing through the fixing hole 62 and through the outer surface 46. The screws may engage in a reinforcing member 63 provided within the door frame 33.
The second flag is mounted so that the axis of the pivot pin 12 is generally parallel to the length of the door frame 33.
The sash member 34 is then connected to the first flag 10. The flange 40 of the sash member 34 is received in the angle formed between the inner flag portion 15 and the central flag portion 16, with the nose 19 overlying the angled surface 42 on the flange and the end surface 43 of the flange 40 bearing against the outer surface 20 of the inner flag portion 15. The grooved surface 41 of the flange 40 lies against the surface of the central flag portion 16. In addition, the projection 24 on the outer flag portion 17 fits into the Eurogroove 45 so that the outer flag portion 17 bears against the outer edge surface 38 of the sash member 34. As a result, the hook 26 projects normally from the outer edge surface 38. The first flag 10 is then connected to the sash member 34 by screws passing through the fixing holes 25 and through the base of the Eurogroove 45 to engage in a reinforcing member 64 provided within the sash member 34.
The receiver 27 is connected to the inner edge surface 49 of the door frame 33. The channel 25 locates over a flange 65 on this surface 49 and the rebate 29 receives a projecting portion of the outer surface 46 of the door frame 33. The receiver 27 is fixed to the door frame 33 by screws passing through the fixing holes 30 and engaging in the door frame reinforcing member 63, as seen in Figure 2. When so located, the projecting receiver 31 extends away from the inner edge surface 49 normal to that surface 49.
The door leaf 32 is thus mounted on the door frame 33 for pivotal movement about the pivot pin 12 between the closed position shown in Figure 2, where the door leaf 32 is received within the door frame 33, and open positions (not shown) where the door leaf 32 is opened out of door frame 33. As is well known in the art, when the door leaf 32 is closed into the door frame 33, locking means may be provided between the door leaf 32 and the door frame 33 at a side opposite the hinge, to lock the door leaf 32 to the door frame 33. Various forms of locking device are well known.
As seen in Figure 2, when the door leaf 32 is closed into the door frame, the hook 26 on the first flag 10 overlaps the projecting receiver hook 31 in a direction parallel to the planes of the outer edge surface 38 of the sash member 34 and the inner edge surface 49 of the door frame 33. If an attempt is made to force the door open by applying a force to the second face surface 36 of the sash member 34, movement of the sash member 34 relative to the frame 33 in a direction parallel to the outer edge surface 33 of the sash member 34 will cause the hook 26 on the flag 10 and the hook 31 on the receiver 27 to inter-engage, so resisting such movement and reducing the resultant load on the hinge pivot 12. This therefore provides additional resistance to an attack of this kind.
The use of a hinge of the kind described above with reference to the drawings obviates the need for a separate dog bolt on the door leaf 32. In addition, the use of co-operating hooks obviates the need for receiving hole on the door frame 33, as is required with some dog bolts.
It will be appreciated that the profile of the first flag 10 is determined by the profile of the sash member 34. If the profile of the sash member 34 is different from that described above with reference to the drawings, the profile of the first flag 10 will be adapted accordingly. Similarly, the profile of the receiver 27 is determined by the profile of the frame 33. If the profile of the frame 33 is different from that described above with reference to the drawings, the profile of the receiver 27 will be adapted accordingly.
The receiver 27 on the door frame 33 has been shown as a separate item. The co-operating part on the door frame 33 need not be formed separately; it could be integrally formed with the door frame 33. It could be formed on a suitably shaped second flag 11. In addition, it is not essential that the co-operating parts are formed by a flag hook 26 and the receiver hook 31. Any two parts that inter-engage when the door leaf 32 is loaded, as described above, and resist such an attack, may be used. For example, the first flag 10 could carry a projection that is received in a hole in the sash member 34 when the door leaf 32 is closed into the door frame 33.
Other forms of inter-engaging parts may be used.
Although only one hinge has been described above as connecting the door leaf 32 to the door frame 33, in general there will be two or more such hinges forming the interconnection.
