[32] Application Date 12 September 1991 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- 5815/3 1 TECHNICAL FIELD The present invention relates to door jambs and more particularly but not exclusively to door jambs for security doors and security flyscreen doors.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The security flyscreen door industry has developed over recent years with increasing emphasis on the degree of security against burglary provided by the door.
Australian Standard AS2803-1987 has gone a long way in defining the strength features of a door which resists most reasonable attempts to break and enter.
However, the weakest point of these doors is at the lock side of the door where the gap between the security door and jamb means that the door is vulnerable to being jemmied open.
15 The purpose of this invention is to provide for the secure covering of that gap when the door is closed and locked, while allowing for the S. free opening and closing of the door for normal access.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantages.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION S: There is disclosed herein a door jamb member for use with a door having an edge portion provided and a lock with a lock tongue to Qnter the door jamb member to secure the door closed, said member comprising: 25 a longitudinally extending base having an aperture through which the lock tongue passes to secure the door closed; and a cover member mounted so as to be movable relative to the base between a retracted position in ise allowing the door to move to the closed position, and a security position extending from the base to cover at least part of the door edge portion, said cover member being positioned relative to said opening to be moved from the retracted position to the cover postofn by a leading portion of said tongue passing through said aperture.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way "f example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a schematic sectioned plts view of a door jamb and the LMM/GSA/659t 2 edge portion of a door associated therewith; and Figure 2 is a schematic sectioned perspective view of the door jamb and door of Figure 1, with the auxiliary bolt of the lock extended.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted the edge portion of a door 10. The door 10 can be a security door or a security flyscreen door. The door 10 is equipped with a lock having a latch tongue 11 and a deadlock bolt 12. As a further example, the lock could have a series of bolts 12 located at spaced vertical positions along the edge of the door.
The door 10 is associated with a door jamb assembly having a vertical door jamb member 13 to be engaged by the door 10, latch tongue 11 and bolt/s 12. The door jamb member 13 includes a longitudinally extending base 14 which is provided with an abutment portion 15 against 15 which the door 10 abuts when closed. The abutment portion 15 is provided with a longitudinally extending recess 16 which secures in position a l. door seal 17.
The base 14 is provided with a series of apertures, with one of the apertures being positioned so that the latch tongue 11 may enter the jamb 2" member 13. The other aperture/s provided in the base 14 permit the AIlt/s 12 also to enter the door jamb member 13.
Pivotally mounted on the base 14 is a cover member 18 which is movable from a retracted position (Figure 1) contained within the base 14, to a security position (Figure 2) extending from the base 14 to cover 25 at least portion of the door 10 and in particular to cover the gap 19 to inhibit jemmying of the door. The cover member 18 is provided with an arcuate segment 20 which is received on a pivot portion 21 formed on the base 14. However it should be appreciated that other pivot arrangements may be employed.
The cover member 18 is provided with an aperture to permit the latch tongue 11 to pass therethrough. However there is no aperture provided in respect of the bolt/s 12 and accordingly the bolt/s 12 engages the cover member 18 and moves it to its security position by causing pivotting thereof through When the door is moved from its closed position it will automatically return the cover member to its retracted position. However it may be advantageous to have a spring biasing the cover member 18 to LMM/GSA/659t -3its retracted position contained within the base 14.
The base 14 is provided with a lip 22 which co-operates with a further lip 23 to provide an interlock, to inhibit jemmying attempts at deforming the door jamb member 13.
The base 14 has a longitudinal opening 23 through which the security portion 24 of the cover member 18 projects. The security portion 24 has a face 25 which either covers the gap 19 or closes the opening 23.
Preferably the door jamb member 13, that is the base 14 and covering rnember 18, are extrusions, particularly aluminium extrusions.

Claims (7)
1. A door jamb member for use with a door having an edge portion provided and a lock with a lock tongue to enter the door jamb member to secure the door closed, said member comprising: a longitudinally extending base having an aperture through which the lock tongue passes to secure the door closed; and a cover member mounted so as to be movable relative to the base between a retracted position in use allowing the door to move to the closed position, and a security position extending from the base to cover at least part of the door edge portion, said cover member being positioned relative to said Bto be moved from the retracted position to the cover position by a leading portion of said tongue passing through said aperture.
2. The door jamb member of claim 1, wherein said cover member is pivotally mounted on said base for pivoting movement between said retracted position and said closed position.
3. The door jamb member of claim 1 or 2, wherein said cover member extends substantially the length of said base so that when in said security position, said cover member covers substantially all of said door edge portion.
4. The door jamb member of claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein said cover S' member has a security portion which extends over said edge portion, and said base has an opening through which said security portion passes when said cover member Is moved to its security position.
The door jamb member of claim 4, wherein said security portion has a face to close said opening and to extend over said edge portion.
6. The door jamb member of any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein said base and said cover member are aluminium extrusions.
7. A door jamb assembly having a door jamb member substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings. DATED this SEVENTH day of SEPTEMBER 1992 Arthur Colin Driscoll Patent Attorneys for the Applicant SPRUSON FERGUSON h tMMI/GSA/659t A Door Jamb Member Abstract A door jamb member for use with a security door the door jamb member includes a base (14) upon which there Is pivotally attached a cover member A lock associated with the door, has its lock tongue (11) pass through the base (14) to engage the cover member to pivotally move the cover member (18) to a position extending over the edge portion of the door so as to prevent access to the gap between the door (10) and the door jamb member.
