Actuated or applied by speed regulators; blocks acting on drums.-In carriage brake mechanism for typewriters, of the kind wherein a rotary keycontrolled member driven from the carriage rack is provided with brake shoes which are displaced centrifugally, the brake shoes are engaged by a stationary element fixed to the machine. The stationary element comprises a cylindrical casing 41, Figs. 4 and 5, secured by rivets 42 to a bracket 34 which is screwed upon a support 33 on the frame. A tongue 36 cut irom the bracket 34 and bent outwardly has a stud 37 riveted or otherwise secured thereto, and a recess in one end of the stud forms a journal for one end of a shaft 38, the other end of which is journaled in a plate 39 attached to the top of the bracket 34. The brake shoes 46 are provided with openings 47 by which they are loosely mounted on pins 45 projecting from a circular plate 44 fixed upon the shaft 38, four pairs of shoes being shown in Fig. 4. Rotation is imparted to the shaft by a pinion 49 thereon meshing with a pinion 50 on a shaft 51 journaled in a bracket 52 pivoted on the stud 37. A pinion 53 on the shaft 51 is adapted to engage the carriage rackbar when the bracket 52 is swung consequent upon the actuation of the tabulating key. The carriage is drawn transversely by the usual spring-mechanism. The operative connection with the control means comprises a stud 55, Fig. 1, on the bracket 52 engaging a slot 56 in a forked arm 57 which is adjustably secured to a key-controlled lever 24 by a pivot screw 58 and a locking-screw 60 passing through a slot 61 in the arm. The. braking effect of the brake shoes 46 may be regulated by arranging them on the pins 45 so that they either lead or trail behind the pins during rotation of the shaft, the former arrangement producing the greater effect owing to frictional resistance tending to move the shoes further outward.
