Abstract
A tube fly component 2 having a longitudinal slot 9 along its entire length that enables the quick and easy addition, removal or re-ordering of tube fly components without the need to detach the fly line from the hook. The slot has an irregular shape to prevent the component from falling off the line.
Description
Title: Tube Fly Enhancement
Background:
Tube flies come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, weights and colours but essentially they comprise a modular system of head, body, tail sleeve and hook and multiples of each and other components. In essence tube flies are so flexible that a fly-tier can create flies of different styles to suit a very wide range of fishing conditions.
Sometimes, these modular components are fixed in place in the finished fly but at other times the components can be removed and replaced or added at will using interlocking tubes and other mechanisms.
In typical tube fly systems the fishing line runs through the bore of all the tube components and is then knotted to a hook at the end. Because of this, however, in order to change the tube fly or to add components,--for example to give extra length or extra weight --the hook has to be removed.
The tube fly component(s) can then be slid off the line -new components added and/or existing components re-ordered, slid back on the line and the hook re-attached.
This procedure can be so fiddly and time consuming that it prevents fly fishers taking the trouble to make changes, even when they know they should, in order to achieve better fishing results.
Statement of invention:
To overcome this problem, this present invention proposes that an irregular shaped slot is made in the tubular components of a tube fly system which allows the line to be slotted into the component yet irregular enough for the tube not to fall off again. This irregular slot mechanism can be used on the tail-sleeve tube, body tube or the head tube or in fact any other tubular component in the tube fly system.
Advantages: The invention allows the fisher to add, remove, re-organise or replace tube fly components very quickly and easily without untying the hook thereby allowing rapid changes of tube fly pattern, colour, size and/or weight for effective fishing.
Introduction to drawings:
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings: 1. Figure 1 illustrates a typical tube fly system and its individual components.
2. Figure 2 illustrates a tube fly body component with an irregular slot that allows the component to be added to, or removed from, the fishing line to join with the other tube fly components without detaching the line from the hook.
3. Figure3 illustrates a tube fly head component with an irregular slot that allows the component to be added to, or removed from, the fishing line to join with the other tube fly components without detaching the line from the hook.
4. Figure4 illustrates an example of how the invention may be applied within a tube fly system for practical purposes.
Descriptions:
This invention comprises a slot feature of varying designs that is cut through one side of any or all tube fly components.
Figure 1 shows a typical tube fly system.
A tube fly system is a modular system which normally comprises a tail-sleeve (1)of different weights, colours, materials, shapes and sizes, a tube fly body (2) of different weights, colours, materials, shapes and sizes and optionally a tube fly head (3) again of different weights, colours, materials, shapes and sizes. Each is normally connected to the other(s) by their overlapping tubular joints (4), inner tube sleeves or other interlocking mechanisms. Some tube fly systems may have extra components such as two or more bodies. The feathers or hair (5) used to create the fly-like appearance may be dressed on any or all of the components. In typical tube flies the fishing line (6) passes through the central bore (7) of each tube component and is tied to the hook (8) at the very end of the tube fly which, of course, stops the tube components sliding off.
Figure 2 illustrates how this invention can be applied to a tube fly body component.
This invention proposes that a slot (9) is cut through one side of a tube fly component (2). Figure 2 illustrates an example of a simple elongated S shape but any shape can be used and this invention is not restricted to a specific shape for the slot. The more irregular the slot the less are the chances that the tube will fall off the fishing line when in use, however, increasing complexity makes the addition and removal more difficult in practice. The slot can even be perfectly straight because in most tube fly systems as the interlocking or overlapping tubes will stop the line falling out anyway.
The tube fly manufacturer can determine the most appropriate shape.
The thickness of the slot can also vary depending on the size of the fly and expected width of the fishing line to be used. This would be determined by the manufacturer.
Figure 3 shows a side elevation which illustrates how the slot (9) is cut though the length of a tube fly head component. The slot connects with the central hollow tube bore (7) through which the fishing line runs when the tube component is in place. In this example the slot is a simple elongated S' shape but any shape can be used and this invention is not restricted to a specific shape or thickness for the slot.
Figure 4 illustrates a simple example of how this invention may be applied to a tube fly system.
In this case there are four tube fly components, a transparent (in this case) tube fly tail-sleeve component (1) with no slot which overlaps a tube fly body component (2) which has a slot (9) and therefore can be easily removed or replaced. This tube fly body component interlocks with a second tube fly body component (10), which in this example, has no slot but instead carries the fur or feathers of the fly dressing (5). This second tube fly body component in turn interlocks into a tube fly head component (3) which also includes a slot (11) for easy replacement.
Therefore, the example tube fly system illustrated in Figure 4 would enable the angler to remove or replace either or both of the two slotted tube fly components (2) and (3) quickly and easily without the need to detach the hook from the line. The fisher can thereby change the colour, size, weight and other properties of the fly very easily indeed.
This invention does not restrict the number, size, shape, colour, material, weight or interlocking mechanisms of any tube fly component, set, design or system. It is simply an invention that can be applied to any component in a tube fly system to enable its quick and easy addition, re-sorting or removal without the usual need and added difficulties of separating the line from the hook and retying.
Claims (3)
- Claims: 1. A tube fly slot feature of varying shape and size that can be applied to tube fly components.
- 2. A tube fly slot feature of varying shape and size that when applied to tubular components of a tube fly system enables the quick and easy addition, removal or re-ordering of those tube fly components without the need to detach the fly line from the hook and retie.
- 3. A tube fly slot feature of varying shape and size that when applied to tubular components of a tube fly system enables the angler to easily change the pattern and properties of a tube fly, such as weight, colour, size and dressing through the exchange of those components without the need to detach the fly line from the hook and retie.
