Abstract

A solar water heating system comprises a solar water panel array `SA' and a heat exchange storage vessel, such as a calorifier, designed to lift the water temperature entering a combination boiler or a household water cylinder or tank. Preferably, water from the solar array is circulated through the calorifier by a pump 'P'. The system may also include an electronic temperature control unit `ETCU'. Preferably, a mixer valve `MV' is provided to mix cold water with the storage vessel water so as to supply water of a preset temperature and prevent excessively hot water from entering the boiler.

Description

DESCRIPTION
Title: Solar Water Storage System
Background:
Conventional Solar Water Systems embody large gas or vacuum filled solar water tubes feeding into large water reservoirs or tanks for drawing. These are both expensive and involved in installation.
This invention is conceptually different utilising a small water solar panel which feeds into a small storage tank which can then be either connected to a combination boiler or other water heating reservoir. It is of a lower cost and simpler in installation.
Conventional systems are constructed with a closed loop containing an anti freeze component incorporating a heat exchange coil within the storage tank.
This invention uses a direct feed to the storage tank and does not incorporate any anti freeze component.
Conventional systems incorporate large reservoirs for water storage.
This invention works on the principal of a small storage reservoir which is being thermally topped up by the Array.
The invention principle design being to uplift the water temperature entering the boiler or raise the reservoir temperature.
Essential Features: This invention preheats the water entering the combination boiler and in so doing the boiler reduces its gas consumption to heat the water being drawn. It can also be coupled to a conventional water reservoir to assist in raising the water temperature. It can also be directly coupled to the water supply where there is no boiler or heated water storage.
Construction Description
The Solar Array comprises heat exchange piping within an insulated casing with a clear insulated canopy. This is sited to attract the solar or ambient energy on a roof or wall.
The Tank (Calorifier) comprises an insulated storage tank with internal heat exchange coil.
The Electronic Temperature Control Unit senses the water temperatures of the Array and Tank and powers the Pump to circulate the water if there is a sufficient differential.
There is an expansion vessel for water expansion and temperature and pressure relief valves for safe operation and an auto air vent.
Operational Description -refer to Diagram 1
System Plumbing Configuration Diagram 1 depicts the plumbing connectivity which is conventional with the exception of the heat exchange coil (HEC) which is coupled back into the Calorifier (C).
On filling the system from the mains input, the Auto Air Vent (AAV) vents the system.
Once filled and vented the whole system pipework is at the same mains input pressure.
There are three isolating valves (IV 1, 1V2 and 1V3) to isolate the Solar Storage System and return the mains water input back to normal for the boiler.
Electronic Temperature Control Unit The Electronic Temperature Control Unit (ETCU) has two sensors (51 and S2) which are located inside the Solar Array (SA) and the Calorifier (C).
If Si is at a greater temperature difference to S2 (approx 8 degrees Centigrade higher) then the ETCU switches in the Pump (P) for a predetermined time (30 seconds approx).
After the 30 seconds the ETCU switches off the pump and goes dormant for 10 mins (approx) after which it senses whether there is again a temperature differential and repeats the pump operation.
The ETCU is a low voltage (12 volt) electronic circuit and the Pump is l2volt.
Both the pump and ETCU are fed by the same 12 volt mains power supply.
Pump flow Operation The pump will circulate water through the Array and then through HEC and then into the Calorifier and then drawing from the Calorifier output through the Single Check Valve (SCV) back into the pump, in so doing it will empty the anay of warmed water replacing it with cooler water from the Calorifier.
Any expansion of water due to the heating effect is accommodated by the Expansion Vessel (EV).
The Double Check Valve (DCV) prevents any reverse flow into the mains water supply.
Mains Water How This unique plumbing configuration results in any mains water, flowing straight through the Calorifier and out of the mixer valve (MV) to the boiler input. The mains water cannot flow through the array as the Single Check Valve (SCV) prevents that flow direction, it also cannot flow from the Calorifier output through the Pump as the pump impellor prevents it.
As a result the mains water flow will move the warmed water through the Calorifier.
Boiler Water Consumption The Mixer Valve (MV) is set to prevent excessive temperatures entering the boiler, it will mix cold water with the Calorifier water to allow a preset temperature to pass through the mixer valve. This is set to 35 degrees approx.
Boiler Gas Consumption As the water sensors in the boiler sense that the water temperature is greater than its predetermined temperature setting it will reduce the gas burners accordingly. This will continue for as long as there is warmed water available in the Calorifier.
System Health and Safety Safeguards The System has temperature and pressure release valves in the event of any excessive temperature or pressure problem. The Temperature setting is at 75 degrees approx and the pressure at 4 bar. These would drain the system through compliant plumbing regulations.
Solar Panel Array The Solar Panel comprises an array of finned copper piping which is thermally efficient in gaining heat both radiated and convected. It is housed within a frame which is insulated and covered by a double skinned clear plastic dome.
For simplicity of installation the Anay is laid on top of existing tiles and affixed to the tile batons.
Pipework connects the Array to the Solar Storage system.
