Abstract
A photographic turntable 1 has a rotatable turntable plate 2, on which there is at least one marking 3A, 3B in a non-visual spectrum material, preferably IR or UV ink, representing the location of an object to be placed on it, so that it is visible when exposed to an appropriate light source 5, preferably infra-red or ultraviolet, but invisible under the light used during the photography. The turntable is preferably used in 3D imaging.
Description
Title: Photographic Turntable and Method of Photographing Products The present invention relates to a photographic turntable and method of photographing products.
It is known to place a product on a turntable and then photograph the product as the product is rotated on the turntable. The images of the product are then combined in a Flash file, or other computer programme or language, to create a 3D 360 degree rotating product which can be viewed from many or all angles and zoomed in upon, e.g. on the internet.
It is important that the product is placed on the turntable such that an axis of symmetry or "centre point" is aligned with the rotational axis of the turntable to prevent the finished visual presentation rotating off centre. One method of doing this is to place markings on the turntable showing the correct position for a product. However these markings are then visible in each photographic image, and it can be very time consuming erasing these markings in the photographic images using computer programmes such as Photoshop".
The invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a photographic turntable comprising: a) a rotatable turntable plate, b) at least one marking on the turntable plate in a non visual spectrum material representing the location an object is to be placed on the turntable plate, and c) a light source to make the or each marking visible, in use the light source being applied to the turntable plate making the or each marking visible and a product placed adjacent the marking on the turntable plate, and the light source then being removed making the or each marking invisible whereby the product can then be photographed without the or each marking being visible in any photographic image.
Preferably the non visual spectrum material is an ink. The ink may be infra-red or ultraviolet ink and the light source and infra-red light or ultraviolet light respectively.
The invention also relates to a method of photographing a product comprising: a) providing a turntable, b) marking the turntable plate in a non visual spectrum material to represent the location an object is to be placed on the turntable plate, c) applying a light source to the marking to highlight the location an object is to be placed on
the turntable plate,
d) placing an object on the highlighted location, e) removing the light source to make the marking invisible, and f) photographing the product on the turntable.
Preferably the non visual spectrum material is an ink. The ink may be infra-red or ultraviolet ink and the light source and infra-red light or ultraviolet light respectively.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a turntable with markings made visible with a light source, and Figure 2 shows a perspective view of a turntable with markings made invisible with a light source removed.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 there is shown a photographic turntable 1.
Turntable 1 has a rotatable plate 2.
A pair of intersecting lines 3A,3B mark, at the point of intersection, the rotation axis 4 of the plate 2. Lines 3A,3B are formed with a non visual spectrum material such as ultraviolet ink, and representing, at the point of intersection, the location an object is to be placed on the
turntable plate.
An ultra-violet light source 5 when illuminated, makes lines 3A,3B visible.
As shown, a square based pyramid box "X", for example, needs to be photographed by a camera 6 as it is rotated on plate 2, with its axis of symmetry aligned with the rotation axis 4 on plate 2.
In use, as shown in Figure 1, the light source 5 is applied to the turntable plate 2 making the lines 3A,3B visible. Box "X" is placed adjacent the lies 3A,3B with its axis "Y" in line with axis 4 of plate 2. As shown in Figure 2, the light source 5 is then being removed making the lines 3A,3B invisible whereby the product can then be photographed by camera 6 without the lines 3A,3B being visible in any photographic image.
The invention thus also relates to a method of photographing a product comprising: a) providing a turntable, b) marking the turntable plate in a non visual spectrum material to represent the location an object is to be placed on the turntable plate, c) applying a light source to the marking to highlight the location an object is to be placed on
the turntable plate,
d) placing an object on the highlighted location, e) removing the light source to make the marking invisible, and f) photographing the product on the turntable.
It is envisaged that a turntable with an integral light source could be produced and sold, either singly or in combination, with a supply of non-visible spectrum material such as ink.
Alternatively a light source and a supply of non-visible spectrum material such as ink could be produced and sold, either singly or in combination, for use with existing turntables.
The light source may be either mains powered or battery powered, and the light source may be either hand held or mounted.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described. For example the or each marking could be of infra-red material and the light source infra-red. The or each marking could be other than intersecting lines, e.g. an outline of the footprint of a product to be photographed or different types of location markings or legends.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
