Abstract
A log cabin wall constructed with two layers consisting of an outer wall 1 and an inner wall 2, with a space between them 3, which may be filled with a layer of insulation. These two walls are separate from each other and do not connect together. In use, this allows the walls to move independently of each other to avoid distortion of the walls.
Description
LOG CABIN WALL
This invention relates to the construction of a log cabin wall.
As a log cabin is an outdoor building the internal temperature may be largely affected by the weather. If it is cold outside then it is likely that the log cabin will also be cold inside, and during hot weather it is likely to be hot inside the log cabin. A log cabin can be used for a wide number of applications and a log cabin with a single wall may not always provide sufficient enough insulation for comfortable use of the building all year round.
The way to overcome this is by creating a log cabin wall made up of layers.
A common way of constructing a log cabin wall with more than one layer is to have a wall with two layers, made up of an inner wall and an outer wall that connect into each other at the interlocking corner of the log cabin building. However, the problem with this is that it does not allow for any movement in the timber.
One of the natural properties of timber is that it is affected by changing weather conditions, expanding when wet and contracting in the heat. An inner wall and an outer wall may expand and contract at different rates. If these two walls are connected to each other it could have an effect on the construction of the log cabin, causing the log cabin walls to curve or distort in shape, or result in gaps appearing.
The proposed invention is the construction of a log cabin wall, being made up using two wall layers -an inner wall and an outer wall with a gap between them. These two walls are separate and do not connect with each other. This invention is named the TripleTherm' wall.
The key aspect in this invention is that the inner and outer walls of the log cabin are independent of each other. The advantage of constructing a wall in this way is that it allows for movements in the timbers. The inner wall will not affect the outer wall, and vice versa, meaning that they can expand and contract naturally without influencing each other's movements.
Constructing a log cabin with a two wall system improves its thermal efficiency, giving a better insulated outdoor building. This reduces the need for adding lots of extra heating when it's cold outside as more heat will be retained inside the building.
The gap between the two walls allow for polyurethane, or other insulation materials, to be placed inside, to provide an even more insulated building.
For example a log cabin with a single wall thickness of 28mm has a U-value of 2.55W/m2K, whereas a log cabin with a 28mm Triplelherm wall (28mm outer wall and 28mm inner wall) with 70mm Polyurethane insulation has a U-value of O,3W/m2K. These values indicate the thermal efficiency of the log cabin, showing that less heat is lost through the TripleTherm walls as more heat is retained inside the building.
Examples of the product will now be described with reference to the drawings.
Figure 1 shows the corner section of a log cabin building constructed with a Triplelherm log cabin wall.
Figure 2 shows a plan view of the corner section of a log cabin building constructed with a TripleTherm log cabin wall.
Figure 3 shows a section of a TripleTherm log cabin wall.
The log cabin wall is made up of two layers -An outer wall (1) and an inner wall (2), with,a space between them (3). As can clearly be seen in the plan view in Figure 2, these two wall layers are separate from each other and do not connect together at any point. The space between the two wall layers can be filled with a layer of insulation.
Claims (2)
- CLAIMS1. A log cabin wall made up of two separate layers that do not connect with each other, consisting of an inner wall and an outer wall with a gap between them.
- 2. The gap between the two wall layers can be filled with insulation, eg. A layer of Polyurethane.
