Abstract

A ticket seal comprises a base layer 1 and a plastics cover sheet 3 secured to the base layer by adhesive for covering a ticket. The plastics cover sheet has predetermined areas of weakness in the form of an arrangement of cuts 7 to resist tampering with the ticket seal. Attempts to remove the cover sheet result in tearing giving an indication that the seal has been tampered with. An associated blank for forming a ticket seal comprises a base layer 1 with a plastic cover sheet 3 adhered along an edge region thereof to the base layer. The plastics cover has a removable backing layer covering an adhesive over substantially the remainder of the cover and is formed with cuts 7 to resist tampering with the ticket seal in use. The ticket may be applied directly to the base layer, e.g. by stamping or printing.

Description

TICKET SEAL AND BLANK THEREFOR
This invention relates to a ticket seal and to a ticket seal blank.
A ticket seal blank comprises a base layer, for example of plain or printed paper or board, and a cover secured along an edge of the base layer. The cover comprises a sheet of generally clear or translucent plastics material provided with a layer of adhesive to secure the plastics sheet to the base layer, and a removable sheet, for example of a silicone material, covering the adhesive layer to prevent the plastics sheet adhering to the base layer until required. A ticket seal is formed by inserting a ticket between part of the base layer and the plastics sheet or by stamping or printing on the base layer to be covered by the plastics sheet, peeling the removable sheet from the plastics sheet and adhering the plastics sheet to the base layer to encapsulate the ticket.
A problem with such ticket seals is that legitimate ticket seals which have been purchased are often tampered with by counterfeiters. A counterfeiter peels back the plastics sheet, tampers with, alters or amends the details of the ticket that has been purchased, and then re-seals the plastics sheet to the base layer without the tampering being evident.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a ticket seal and a ticket seal blank which overcome, or at least ameliorate, the above-mentioned disadvantage.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a ticket seal comprising a base layer and a plastics cover secured to the base layer by adhesive and covering a ticket, the plastics cover having formed therethrough a predetermined arrangement of cuts to resist tampering with the ticket seal.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a ticket seal blank comprising a base layer and a plastics cover having an adhesive coated thereon and adhered along an edge region thereof to the base layer, the plastics cover having a removable layer covering the adhesive over substantially the remainder of the cover, the plastics cover having formed therethrough a predetermined arrangement of cuts to resist tampering with the ticket seal in use.
The removable layer may have a thickness in the range from 30 to 100 microns, preferably substantially 50 microns. The removable layer may comprise or include a silicone material.
The predetermined arrangement of cuts may extend partly through the removable layer.
The base layer may be paper, board, such as thin card, or a synthetic material.
The base layer may have a thickness in the range from 90 to 600 microns.
The ticket may be applied directly to the base layer. For example, the ticket may be stamped or printed on the base layer.
Alternatively, the ticket may be inserted between the base layer and the plastics cover such that the base layer and cover surround the periphery of the ticket.
The plastics cover may have a thickness in the range from 30 to 100 microns, preferably substantially 50 microns.
The predetermined arrangement of cuts may include cuts provided in corner regions of the plastics cover, extending into the coverfrom the periphery thereof.
The corner cuts may have a length in the range from 7 to 1 2 mm.
The predetermined arrangement of cuts may include cuts provided in side regions of the plastics cover, extending into the coverfrom the periphery thereof.
The side cuts may have a length in the range from 7 to 12 mm. The side cuts may be spaced no more than 30 mm from an adjoining cut extending into the plastics cover from the periphery thereof.
The predetermined arrangement of cuts may additionally include one or more cuts within the periphery of the plastics cover. The internal cuts may be in the form of a cross, a wavy line, a V-shape, a U-shape or any other suitable shape.
An internal cut is preferably provided within 15mm of a cut extending from the periphery of the plastics cover.
For a better understanding of the present invention and to show more clearly how it may be carried into effect reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic illustration of one embodiment of a ticket seal blank according to the present invention; and Figure 2 is a diagrammatic illustration of another embodiment of a ticket seal blank according to the present invention.
Figure 1 shows a ticket seal blank which comprises a base layer 1, for example of thin card, or the like and a plastics cover sheet 3 which has a layer of adhesive on one side to enable the cover sheet to be secured to the card. The layer of adhesive is covered by a layer of removable material, for example comprising or including a silicone material, except fora region along one side 5 where the cover sheet 3 is already secured to the base layer 1. A ticket seal may be issued by, for example, writing, stamping or printing a ticket onto the base layer 1 or by issuing a separate ticket of smaller dimensions than the base layer so as to allow the plastics cover sheet to be secured to the base layer entirely around the periphery of the ticket. Once the ticket has been issued, the removable layer is peeled away to expose the adhesive layer and the cover sheet is adhered to the base layer to form a ticket seal.
The base layer may be of paper, board (e.g., card), or a synthetic material having a thickness of about 90 microns to about 600 microns, and may be substantially rectangular, for example in the range from about 54 mm by 85 mm to 175 mm by 240 mm. The ticket may be for any purpose for which tickets are issued, such as a for a theatre, sporting event, concert or for travel. The plastics cover sheet may have a thickness in the range from 30 to 100 microns, preferably about 50 microns, and the adhesive may be in the form of a coating with a coating weight of about 10-17 gsm, while the removable layer may have a thickness in the range from 30 to 100 microns, preferably about 50 microns.
In order to render the ticket seal resistant to tampering, a predetermined arrangement of cuts 7 is formed entirely through the plastics cover sheet and partly though the removable layer in order that the removable layer can be removed when the ticket seal is issued without damaging the plastics cover sheet and the plastics cover sheet can be adhered to the base layer around the ticket so as to seal the ticket within the ticket seal.
In order to tamper with the ticket, a counterfeiter needs to peel the plastics cover sheet away from the base layer. This is done by lifting the plastics cover sheet from one of the edges of the base layer, usually at a corner, and then slowly peeling back the plastics cover sheet to expose the ticket itself, or the ticket details if stamped, printed or handwritten directly onto the base layer. The counterfeiter will then alter the ticket details and seal the plastics cover sheet back onto the base layer.
The predetermined arrangement of cuts 7 causes the plastics cover sheet to tear as it is lifted and peeled back from the base layer, clearly indicating that the ticket seal has been tampered with.
As shown in Figure 1, it has been found that cuts, preferably 7 to 12 mm long, extend ing into the plastics cover sheet from the periphery of the cover sheet in a corner region thereof are particularly effective in preventing tampering. The corner cuts may be straight or curved. The corner cuts are ideally supplemented by one or more cuts, preferably 7 to 12 mm long, extending into the plastics cover sheet from the periphery thereof along one or more of the straight edges of the plastics cover sheet. The edge cuts may be straight or curved. Such cuts extending from the periphery of the cover sheet are preferably no more than 30 mm apart and are preferably provided on at least those edges which extend at right angles to the edge to which the plastics cover sheet is initially secured.
Further cuts, for example in the form of a cross as shown in Figure 1, are preferably provided within the periphery of the plastics cover sheet, for example within about 15 mm from a cut in the periphery of the plastics cover sheet.
Figure 2 shows that the arrangement of the cuts within the periphery of the plastics cover sheet may be varied in order to prevent a counterfeiter becoming familiar with a particular pattern of cuts. As shown in Figure 2, the internal cuts may be in the form of a wavy line.
Other forms of cuts which have been found to be useful include V-shapes and U-shapes, but other shapes may be equally effective.
