Description

Security Label Apparatus and Method of Production Thereof
The present invention relates to security apparatus in the form of labels or stickers which authenticate the goods they are attached to.
Although the following description refers exclusively to security apparatus in the form of stickers for car parts and/or the like, the skilled person will appreciate that the present invention can be used on any such goods and is not restricted to automotive parts.
The use of security labels to form tamper evident seals that show if a label has been removed or if its removal has been attempted from goods, and/or guarantee the authenticity of the goods to which they are attached is known.
The problem with conventional security labels is that sophisticated forgers or manufacturers of counterfeit goods have techniques that can overcome most security features, for example tamper evident delamination by using solvents and the like. Identification of such counterfeit goods in the marketplace can also be a problem for rights holders if the goods can come from several OEM suppliers. For example car manufacturers identifying legitimate or counterfeit spare parts.
It is therefore an aim of the present invention to provide an improved security label or sticker that addresses the abovementioned problems.
It is a further aim of the present invention to provide an improved method of manufacture of a security label or sticker that addresses the abovementioned problems. It is a yet further aim of the present invention to provide a security system which enables the easy and rapid identification of counterfeit and/or legitimate goods.
In a first aspect of the invention there is provided a security label for the authentication of goods to which the label is attached in use, said label including a first or outward facing surface and a second or inward facing surface, at least part of which includes an adhesive layer, said layer including at least one security cut and/or cut away portion wherein identification and/or coded information is printed on at least part of the outward surface and corresponding and/or correlating information is printed on at least part of the inward facing surface.
Typically the identification and/or coded information on the inward facing surface is an alphanumeric code or sequence" at least part of which Corresponds, correlates or is an encrypted output of at least part of the information printed on the outward facing surface.
In one embodiment the information on the inward facing surface includes one or more check digits corresponding to at least part of the information on the outer surface.
In one embodiment the identification and/ or coded information printed on at least part of the outward surface and/or corresponding and/or correlating information printed on at least part of the inward facing surface is a barcode or other such similar information. Typically the ink used to print the information on at least the first or outward surface is a chameleon ink or an iridescent ink. Preferably the ink is an iridescent ink.i
Typically at least part of the printing is produced by thermal and/ or heat transfer printing.
In one embodiment the label includes a layered or laminated structure. Typically the layers at least partially detach and/or delaminate on removal or partial removal from the goods or substrate. Further typically delamination reveals a tamper evident message or seal.
In one embodiment a barcode and/or alphanumeric codes or data are printed onto at least part of the outward surface of the label. Typically this information includes information concerning the origin, type and/ or uses of the goods or substrate to which the label is applied.
In one embodiment the second or inward facing surface includes a deadened area. Typically the deadened area is a portion of the inward surface which does not include an adhesive layer. Further typically at least part, or all, of the information on the inward surface is located within one or more deadened areas.
In one embodiment the label contains one or more perforations. Typically the perforations define one or more frangible portions. Further typically at least one deadened area is defined and/or located substantially between two or more perforations.
In one embodiment the deadened area includes perforations substantially around the edge of the same such that the area can be removed or partially removed to reveal the printing or code on the inward facing surface. Typically the deadened area can be removed, partially removed and/or revealed without disturbing or interfering with the integrity of the rest of the label.
In one embodiment at least part of the label can be opened or revealed around the perforations without damaging the remaining label, in particular any tamper evident portions or areas.
Typically the label includes a liner or release layer on at least part of the inward facing surface. Further typically the release liner is removed prior to the label being applied to goods the substrate in use.
In one embodiment at least part of the label includes UV dull material or paper that does not include brighteners. Typically the label includes UV active or fluorescent planchettes, particles and/ or fibres.
In one embodiment the security cuts or security cut portions form a line and/or are located along a substantially linear axis. Typically the security cuts depend and/or are located substantially in a line across the label.
In one embodiment the label includes at least two cut-away portions or indentations. Typically the cut away portions are formed on opposing edges of the label. Further typically the security cuts are located substantially between the cut aways.
In a second aspect of the invention there is provided security device or label that includes any one or any combination of the following:
- Printing on the rear or inward surface;
- Security cuts and/or cut aways; - Tamper evident lamination;
- Perforations; and/or
- UV active, reflective or fluorescent materials.
Typically the deadened area is at least partially bordered or surrounded by perforations.
Typically the UV fluorescent materials are planchettes or discs.
In a third aspect of the invention there is provided a method of producing or printing a security label for the authentication of goods to which the label is attached in use, said label including a first or outward facing surface and a second or inward facing surface, at least part of which includes an adhesive layer, said layer including at least one security cut and/or cut away portion wherein said method includes the steps of printing identification and/or coded information on at least part of the outward surface and/or printing corresponding and/or correlating information on at least part of the inward facing surface.
Specific embodiments of the invention are now described with reference to the following figures, wherein:
Figure 1a-c shows various views of a label in accordance with one embodiment of the invention; and
Figures 2a-c show front views of the labels in accordance with various embodiments of the invention.
Figure 1 shows a tamper evident security label 2 in accordance with the invention that is particularly suitable for application to car parts, accessories, spare parts and/or the like to validate the authenticity of the goods, even if they come frorn one of several third party manufacturers. The label information on the is usually printed onto the upper or outer surface 4 of the label which is one of several located on a release liner (not shownO before application to the goods.
The label 2 includes several security features which enable its functional requirements set out above. The label 2 is printed on UV dull paper which is a paper with no, or very little, brightening compounds in the same. Embedded within the paper are a plurality of UV fluorescent planchettes which respond or show up from the paper when irradiated with UV light. The barcode and other information printed on the front 4 of the label is printed in ink with iridescent or other such similar colour properties preventing simple photocopying of the label.
The security features further include a tamper evident layer or laminated structure wherein removal or attempted removal of the label reveals a layer or residue with a security pattern or message; the word VOID in this example. It is difficult to reattach the label or layers accurately or precisely enough such that the message or pattern is not at least partially visible.
In addition the label 2 includes a strip of security cut means 6, located between two cut out portions 8', 8" on opposite edges of the label 2. If the label is removed or attempted to be removed the security cut means come away in small irregular fragments that are very difficult to reassemble without the removal or attempted removal being evident.
The rear or inward surface 10 of the label 2 includes an adhesive layer save for a deadened or non-adhesive area 12. The deadened area 12 includes printing, at least part of which corresponds to the information printed on the front or outward facing layer 4. For example one or more check digits can be printed onto the rear deadened area. The check digits or letters can be buiied or included in other alphanumeric codes or symbols to make copying even harder. In this example the deadened area and the printing includes two lines of perforations 14', 14" located on either side of the same. In use therefore if the validity or authenticity of the label (and thereby the goods on which they are attached) can be checked by peeling away this portion of the label and at least part of the code printed on the rear compared with at least part the information printed on the front.
