Abstract

A device for assistance in stopping smoking consists of a body 10 dimensioned and shaped to correspond with a conventional cigarette or other smoking product wherein the body has first and second ends 11 and 12, the first end defining a mouthpiece; characterised in that the body has a bore 13 between said first and second end, the bore having a predetermined cross-sectional area. The predetermined cross-sectional area may be a circular cross-sectional area having a diameter of from 1 mm to 1.5mm. The body may be formed of a resilient plastics material such as high impact styrene or an expanded or foamed plastics material and have a similar density to a conventional cigarette.

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO
DEVICES FOR ASSISTANCE IN STOPPING SMOKJNG
The present invention relates to improvements in or relating to devices for assistance in stopping smoking.
Numerous devices are known for smokers to use in seeking to stop smoking. Many of these seek to reduce a smoker's dependence on nicotine by supplying nicotine in a different form from a cigarette. However, it is perceived that the physical action of smoking is also an addiction which needs to be overcome. As such, a large number of cigarette-like devices are known which dispense a vapour of nicotine but without the harmful smoke. One such device is described in US 5 893 371B. Many such devices do not, however, address the issue of nicotine addiction or seek to replace the effects of nicotine with other chemical reagents. The present invention seeks to provide a non-chemical aid.
Accordingly, the present invention provides smoking reduction aid consisting of a body dimensioned and shaped to correspond with a conventional cigarette or other smoking product wherein the body has first and second ends, the first end defining a mouthpiece; characterised in that the body has a bore between said first and second end, the bore having a predetermined cross-sectional area.
Preferably, the predetermined cross-sectional area is a circular cross-sectional area; more preferably having a diameter of from 1mm to 1.5mm, even more preferably from 1.2 to 1.3mm; most preferably about 1.25mm.
Suitably, the body is formed of a plastics material. Advantageously, the plastics material is a resilient plastics material. Preferably, the plastics material is a styrene material, more preferably a high-impact styrene, suitably injection moulded. The plastics material may be an expanded or foamed polymeric material.
Advantageously, the plastics material is selected to have a similar density to a conventional cigarette.
The above and other aspects of the present invention will now be described in further detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a longitudinal cross-section of an embodiment of a device in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 2 is an end view of the embodiment of Figure 1.
Referring to the figures, there is shown an embodiment of a device in accordance with the present invention, comprising a body 10 having two ends 11, 12 one of which acts as a mouthpiece for the device. Body 10 has a bore 13 therethrough. In the embodiment shown, bore 13 is of a circular cross-section, but other shapes are equally suitable. Trials have shown that a bore diameter of around 1.25mm produces, in body of dimensions similar to those of a conventional cigarette, a "draw" or resistance to sucking similar to that experienced when smoking a conventional cigarette.
Diameters of around 1.0 and 1.55mm, preferably 1.2 to 1.3, provide acceptable effects, but about 1.25mm is even more preferable.
Body 10 is suitably formed of a plastics material for resistance, most suitably from a polymeric material, such as high impact styrene. The material may alternatively be an expanded or foamed polymeric material and advantageously provides an aid having similar weight characteristics to a conventional cigarette.
Body 10 may be self-coloured or painted to provide a similar appearance to a conventional cigarette.
Although described above with reference to cigarettes, the present invention is equally suitable for use as a smoking reduction aid for other smoking products, such as cigars.

  1. CLAIMS: 1. A smoking reduction aid consisting of a body dimensioned and shaped to correspond with a conventional cigarette or other smoking product wherein the body has first and second ends, the first end defining a mouthpiece; characterised in that the body has a bore between said first and second end, the bore having a predetermined cross-sectional area.
  2. 2. An aid as claimed in claim 1 wherein the bore is circular.
  3. 3. An aid as claimed in claim 2 wherein the bore has a diameter of from 1mm to 1.5mm.
  4. 4. An aid as claimed in claim 3 wherein the bore has a diameter of from 1.2 to 1.3mm; preferably about 1.25mm.LU0
  5. 5. An aid as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the body is formed of a plastics material. r6. An aid as claimed in claim S wherein the plastics material is a resilient plastics material.7. An aid as claimed in claim 5 or claim 6 wherein the plastics material is a styrene material, preferably a high-impact styrene.8. An aid as claimed in any one of claims 5 to 7 wherein the plastics material is an expanded or foamed polymeric material.9. An aid as claimed in any one of claims 5 to 8 wherein the plastics material is selected to have a similar density to a conventional cigarette.10. A smoking reduction aid substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings. L()
