Description

A BOWL
The present invention relates to a bowl, in particular to a bowl for use in domestic situations, especially to a bowl for use in a domestic sink.
Bowls are frequently used in kitchens, in particular domestic kitchens, for a range of washing and cleaning activities. Very frequently, a bowl is used to hold water in a sink beneath a water tap or faucet. One very common use for a bowl is the washing and cleaning of cooking and eating utensils after the preparation and consumption of a meal. The bowl is typically placed in a sink or basin and filled with water of the appropriate temperature from the tap or faucet, a suitable detergent is added to the water and the utensils, including crockery, cutlery and the like, are washed in the bowl.
A particular problem arises with conventional and known bowls. They are generally rectangular or circular in plan view with relatively high sides. When filled with, it can be difficult to find items in the bowl. It can also be difficult to clean the items ::::. effectively.
* *, Accordingly, there is a need for an improved bowl, in particular one that offers advantages when used in domestic situations.
WO 1986006943 discloses a rinsing aid for domestic washing-up. The rinsing aid comprises a conical lower base portion arranged to seal around a drain outlet in the * base of a basin or sink in which the device is placed. A water tight, adjustable conduit extends upwards from the lower base portion, on which is mounted an upper conical receptacle. In use, items to be rinsed may be placed in the upper receptacle and rinsed with clean water from a tap or faucet. Water containing detergent may be present in the basin or sink around the device, in which items may be washed before rinsing. In this way, the device serves to segregate the clean rinsing water from the water containing dirt and/or detergent, thereby allow items to be washed and rinsed properly in a single basin or sink.
The device of WO 1986006943 is somewhat complex in construction. Further, it does not overcome the problem of items being difficult to find and manoeuvre in the sink during washing.
According to the present invention, there is a provided a bowl comprising: a base; a side wall having a first portion and a second portion, the second portion being opposite the first portion, the side wall extending from the base to define with the base an interior of the bowl; and a rim extending around the free edge of the side wall; wherein the base extends at an angle to the rim, such that the interior of the bowl has a first region adjacent the first portion of the side wall and a second region adjacent the second portion of the side wall, the depth of the first region of the interior being greater than the depth of the second region of the interior.
The bowl of the present invention has an interior that is non-uniform in its depth.
In this respect, the term depth' is a reference to the distance between the rim of the S..' bowl and the base at a given point along the side wall. In the bowl of the present S...
invention, the depth of the interior is greater in one region of the interior than a second, * *. opposing region, by virtue of the base being at an angle. In this way, the user has available water of varying depths, which facilitates the washing and rinsing of a range of different items. In particular, the angled base allows items to be placed in the bowl and easily retrieved for washing.

* The bowl comprises a base. The base may have any suitable shape, when viewed in plan view. One preferred shape is generally circular or oval. A particularly preferred shape for the base is rectangular, in particular square, as this allows the bowl to fit within many domestic sinks.
The bowl comprises a side wall extending from the base. The shape of the side wall in plan view is determined by the shape of the base. Thus, the side wall, in plan view, may be circular or oval, more preferably rectangular, in particular square. The side wall may extend at any suitable angle from the base. In one preferred arrangement, the side wall extends generally perpendicular from the base. The junction between the base and the side wall may have any suitable form. A preferred form is generally rounded, thus avoiding the interior of the bowl from having corners that may be relatively inaccessible during use and for cleaning. Rather, the rounded junction between the base and the side wall provides the interior of the bowl with a generally rounded configuration, which is easier to use and to keep clean and use.
The bowl is provided with a rim at the free edge of the side wall of the bowl. In general use, the rim will be uppermost, with the base of the bowl downwards. The side wall and rim are preferably arranged such that, in normal use, the rim extends substantially horizontally.
The bowl comprises a first region of the interior adjacent a first portion of the side wall and a second region of the interior adjacent a second portion of the side wall.
The first portion of the side wall is opposite the second portion of the side wall. The base extends at an angle to the rim of the bowl between the first region of the interior and the second region of the interior, whereby the first region of the interior of the bowl is greater in depth than the second region of the interior. The base may extend between the first and second regions of the interior in a discontinuous manner, for example stepwise, or in a continuous manner, or a combination of the two. In a preferred embodiment, the base extends continuously between the first and second regions.

* In a preferred embodiment, the base extends at an angle from the first portion " of the side wall to the second portion of the side wall. In this embodiment, the junction * between the base and the side walls is preferably rounded, with the junction between the base and the first portion of the side wall most preferably having a radius of ** 30 curvature that is greater than the radius of curvature of the junction between the base *..*..
and the remaining portions of the side wall.
The base may extend at any suitable angle to the rim. Preferably, the angle is from 10 to 50°, more preferably from 15 to 450, still more preferably from 20 to 40°. An angle of from 25 to 350, more especially about 30°, is particularly suitable.
The ratio of the depths of the first and second regions of the interior of the bowl may be any suitable ratio. Preferably, the ratio of the depth of the first region to that of the second is at least 2:1, more preferably at least 3:1, still more preferably at least 4:1.
In one preferred embodiment, the base approaches the rim of the bowl at the second portion of the side wall. In such a case, the ratio of the depth of the first region of the interior to the second region is at least 8:1, more preferably at least 10:1, still more preferably at least 15:1, more preferably still at least 20:1. In one preferred embodiment, the base terminates at the edge of the second portion of the side immediately adjacent the rim.
In normal use, the bowl is deployed with the base lowermost and the rim uppermost. Preferably, the bowl is further provided with one or more supports to keep the bowl in the aforementioned orientation. The supports may comprise one or more legs and/or feet extending from the side wall or the base.
For ease of storage and transport, the bowl is preferably arranged such that one bowl may be stacked on a second bowl so as to extend at least partially within the interior of the second bowl. In the case that the bowl is provided with legs and/or feet extending from the side wall or base, the legs and/or feet are preferably formed with a .. : hollow interior and an opening into the interior of the bowl, such that the legs and/or *...
.,.,25 feet of the one bowl may extend within the interior of the feet of the second bowl, when stacked. * ** * S S S.. S
The bowl may be formed from any suitable material and by any suitable technique. Preferably, the bowl is formed from a suitable plastic, details of which are : * 30 well known in the art. The plastic bowl is most preferably formed by moulding. Again, *S.SS.
* suitable moulding techniques are well known in the art.
An embodiment of the bowl of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bowl according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a side view of the bowl of Figure 1 in the direction A with a partial cross-section; Figure 3 is a front view of the bowl of Figure 1 in the direction B; Figure 4 is a rear view of the bowl of Figure 1 in the direction C; and Figure 5 is a plan view of the bowl of Figure 1.
Referring to Figure 1, there is shown a bowl according to one embodiment of the present invention, generally indicated as 2. The bowl 2 comprises a base 4, from which extends a side wall 6. The side wall 6 comprises opposing side wall portions 8 and a rear wall portion 10. A rim 12 extends along the free edge of the side wall 6 and is formed as a inverted trough.
As shown in Figure 2, the base 4 extends at an angle a to the rim 12. In the embodiment shown, the angle a is about 27 to 30°.
The base 4 is joined to the side wall 6 by a generally rounded junction. As I...
