Abstract

A housed vertical axis wind turbine 12 which is set within what appears to be a traditional chimney 11 or waste ventilator 17 so as to give the impression that it is not a turbine. The vertical axis wind turbine 12 can be mounted individually or as multiple units 18 to work as a domestic or industrial generator. The device may be mounted on any roof, and may be adapted by external finishing, acting to camouflage or disguise it, in order to blend in with the style of a particular area.

Description

A Housed Vertical Axis Wind Turbine This invention relates to a vertical axis wind turbine that give the appearance of being a chimney pot or roof ventilator by means housing it in, what appears to be, traditional roof furniture.
With the onset of global warming, there is a demand for renewable (5)energy sources. Conventional wind power generators are effective sources of energy but have many disadvantages which make them unpopular.
Wind turbines often require planning permission, due to their size noise and appearance.
(1 0) Whilst vertical axis wind turbines are not as efficient as horizontal axis wind turbiries, they are much quieter in operation and significantly more reliable.
Since the power source is free and renewable, the efficiency of the unit is less critical in factoring its worthiness. Cost, reliability and blending in (1 5)with the surrounding properties are more important than efficiency.
It is better to have something inefficient than nothing at all.
It is an object of the present invention to produce a vertical axis wind turbine that blends in with the traditional fixtures on roofs. The concealed vertical axis wind turbine may be used as a direct or integrated (20)power source.
It is a further object of this invention to overcome the objections of horizontal axis and some vertical axis wind turbines by placing the vertical axis wind turbine within a mask or facade.
From one aspect the invention consists of a housed small vertical wind (25)turbine that appears to be a chimney cowl or a waste pipe ventilator.
In a preferred embodiment, several units are fixed to the ridge of the roof in a box resembling a chimney stack, this system has the added advantage of increasing the power output.
The preferred group of vertical axis wind turbines may be connected to a (30)single generator by means of gears or belts and pulleys.
The preferred group of turbines may have their own individual generators.
The group of vertical axis wind turbines are fitted within what appears from the naked eye to be chimney caps.
(35)Preferably the mini turbines are fmished in an appropriate colour to resemble the traditional chimney structures in the particular area.
From another aspect the turbines and housings are finished to look like any ordinary chimney.
From another aspect the invention can consist of a single turbine set to resemble a soil pipe ventilator, with the generator housed within the supporting pipe.
From another aspect the invention consists of a concealed wind turbine (5)generator that resembles a chimney or soil pipe ventilator.
The invention relates to the aesthetics of vertical axis wind turbine so that they fool the viewer into believing that it is a conventional chimney pot or waste ventilator.
The invention can be used to replace redundant chimney pots. The (1O)invention can be set upon an existing chimney stack adjacent to working chimney cowls or pots and, or replacing redundant pots.
From another aspect the invention may resemble a rotor vent spinning chimney cowl.
From a further aspect the invention includes superfluous furniture that (1 5)has no other purpose than to distract the viewer into thinking that he or she is not looking at a wind turbine.
From a still further aspect the housed vertical axis wind turbine operates normally despite featuring non essential framework set to resemble traditional rooftop fixtures.
(20)From a further aspect the housed vertical axis wind turbine is designed to generate electricity and camouflage itself.
From a further aspect the vertical axis wind turbine is masked by traditional looking roof furniture.
The invention may be performed in various ways and a specific (25)embodiment will now be described, by ways of examples with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic cross section of the wind turbine in relation to external furniture which disguises its appearance in order for it to better blend in with its surroundings.
(30)Figure 2 is a diagrammatic view of examples of different installations of the wind turbine showing a single turbine 17 and a multiple installation 18 where a larger energy output is required Figure 3 is a diagrammatic cross section view of how a multiple turbine installation would work to create a high output system.
(35)Figure 4 is a diagrammatic view of different examples of how the unit 11 may look in different installations to blend in with the local style of chimney cowls.
As can be seen in figures 1 and 2, the unit 11 consists of a vertical axis wind turbine 12 that is small enough to fit inside a chimney pot and (40)chimney pot style covering 13 that disguises to the onlooker the mechanism 11.
As can be best seen in figure 3 the unit 11 can be mounted as any multiple in order to increase power output potential, where several turbines can operate one or more generators 15.
As can be best seen in figure 3 the unit 11 can consist of several small (5)turbines 12 linked to one or more generators 15 through gears or pulleys 14.
As can be best seen in figure 2 the unit is normally mounted on a roof 16 of a house or building 17.
The unit 11 may also be used on a boat (not shown) or anywhere where (1 0)roof vents and chimneys are a normal site within the environment (not shown) As can be best seen in figure 2 the unit 11 can be set within what resembles a chimney cowl 13 or a waste ventilator 17.
As can be best seen in figure 3 a box resembling a chimney stack 19 may (1 5)be positioned on the roof 16 of a house 20 or building 20 which can carry a multiple of units 11.
As can be best seen on figure 2 the unit 11 may be installed upon an existing chimney stack alongside real chimney pots or cowls.
As can be best seen in figure 1,2, 3 and 4 the embodiment of the unit 11 (20)may be tailored to resemble a traditional chimney pot or waste ventilator that may be peculiar to the area of useage.
As can be best seen in figure 4 the unit 11 may resemble a rotor vent chimney cowl 21 which already spins in normal operation.
As can be best seen in figure 4 the housing unit for a vertical axis wind (25)turbine may be finished in a variety of disguises 21, 22 and 23 to better blend in with the traditional architecture or the site and situation.
As can be best seen in figure 4 the framework 24 may interfere with the aerodynamic efficiency of the vertical axis wind turbine or fan 12.
